JAMES BARING GOULD, OF WELLINGTON, NEXV ZEALAND.
LABEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,920, dated June 27, 1899. I
Application filed August 31, 1898. Serial No. 689,940. (No model.)
To all whom; it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BARING GOULD,
a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 54 Lambton Quay,Wellington, New Zealand, have invented an Improved Label, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to labels used upon luggage or other articles to indicate the owner or name thereof or for purposes of identification; and the object of the invention is to provide a label which may be readily affixed and detached, cheap to manufacture, light in weight, and give ample room for writing an address, name, or description.
I am aware that labehcarriers designed more especially for luggage have been made of leather and with a strap and buckle for attaching and detaching the same. Within such carriers the label proper is inserted and the cost of manufacture is considerable. By my invention the trouble of inserting is avoided and the cost of manufacture materially reduced.
In manufacturing the label I use strong paper, prepared linen, or other similar pliable material which may be written -upon. The body of the label may be oblong or other suitable shape, and one end is out to form a neck with an enlarged tip. To attach the label, this said neck is folded around some portion of the article, such as a handle, and the wings forming the enlargement of the tip are folded back upon the neck. When so folded, the tip is passed through a suitable hole formed in the label near the root of the neck. The wings are then spread out to effectually prevent'the withdrawal of the neck, and the point of the tip is tucked into another hole to insure further security'and give a neat finish and appearance.
A used label may be unfastened for use upon other articles; but when a label is to remain permanently upon an article the wings may be fastened down by any suitable adhesive substance.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, it being understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details shown, as these may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Figure 1 is an illustration of the label attached to an ordinary traveling-trunk. Fig. 2 is a view of the label with the neck spread open. Fig. 3 shows the same with the fastening of the neck secured. Fig. at is a representation of the fastenings of the neck folded ready for passing through the body of the label.
Similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the views.
The bodyl of the label has one end formed into a neck 2, the tip 3 of which is enlarged by wings 4E, capable of being folded, as shown in Fig. 4. The wings in this position'do not increase the width of the neck, but will readily pass through the slot or hole 5 in the body of the label, and when they are spread out will prevent withdrawal of the neck, as shown in Fig. 3. The pointed tip 3 isthen passed through the slot or hole 6 asafurther security and neatness. The neck may be reinforced by folding the edges 7 to form a double thickness of material. I
. In affixing the label to an article the neck 2 is passed around any convenient part, such as a strap, cord, handle, or bar.
The bottom of the label is perforated, as shown by dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3, and may be torn through at those lines. The
name is written or otherwise delineated upon the body of the label and the address upon the lowest of the strips 8, 9,10, or 11. When a fresh address is required, a strip 11, for example, is torn off and strip 10 utilized for the new address, and so on until the whole of the strips have been employed. In this manner a label may be used several times. When the label is intended to remain permanently in position, the wings a are fastened down to the body of the label by gum, paste, or other suitable adhesive matter.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is Y A label formed of an integral piece of flexiof the end of saidpoint, substantially as de- 1'0 ble material, comprising a body portion 1, and scribed. a reduced and reinforced neck 2 terminating In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my in adonble-beveled pointShavingoppositelyhand in the presence of two witnesses. disposed wings 44 the said body portion havq ing two parallel cross-slots 5 and 6 at the JAMES BAKING GOULD base of said neck, the one for the passage of \Vitnesses: the point and wings, the latter in a folded I E. S. BALDWIN, position, and the other slot for the reception B. E. HUGHES.
