Description

NITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. SIEBLER, OF DAYTON, OI-IIO.
TOBACCO-POUCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,442, dated March 1'7, 1896.
Application iiled June 22, 1895. Serial ll'ol 553,641. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. SIEBLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pouches;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to tobacco-pouches; and its object is to provide the same with a knife for cutting the tobacco into convenient or desired sizes when needed, and also to provide a clasp in which the knife fits when the pouch is closed, which not only serves to hold the pouch in its closed condition, but also serves as a case for the knife, so as to prevent the person or clothes being injured.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a tobacco-pouch constructed in accordance with my invention, the flap being opened. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, the iiap being closed and the knife seated in the case. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clasp or case detached from the pouch.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates the pouch made of a single piece of any suitable material, folded up at one end and the edges stitched together, forming a tobacco-receptacle with a closing-flap 2. To this flap is riveted or otherwise secured a knife or cutting-blade The numeral 4 designates the cutting-edge, which projects beyond the edge of the flap.
The numeral 5 designates the clasp or case for the knife, consisting of a rectangular metal plate bent over upon itself at the center, forming two parts, 5a and 5b, which embrace the short side of the pouch. At the lower end the outside part, 5, of said plate is formed with a prong or prongs 6 at right angles thereto, which pass through the material of the said short side and also through the holes or apertures in the inner part, 5b, of said plate and then clinched, whereby the clamp is securely held in place.
The numeral 7 designates the front of the clasp, consisting of a rectangular plate having sides bent over and engaged with thc edges of the part 5a. This plate extends from the bottom of said part 5 to about half-Way the length thereof and forms a case for the knife.
In closing the point the cutting-edge of the knife is inserted in the top of the case and pushed down thereon as far as it will go. The knife will now be concealed within the case, preventing injury to the person or clothing thereby, and by reason of the frictional contact between it and the plates 5 and 7 will be held against accidental disengagement and kept closed, preventing escape of the contents of the pouch. To open the pouch it is held in the left hand, with the clasp or case resting against the pahn thereof. The knife is then withdrawn from the case by the right hand and can'be used for cutting off pieces of tobacco from a plug.
rlhe clasp or case may also be utilized for advertising purposes, the advertisement being stamped or otherwise produced thereon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 4 l. The combination with a tobacco-pouch, having a closing-flap and the knife secured thereto, of a clasp or case secured to the pouch within which the knife fits when the flap is closed; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a tobacco-pouch, having a closing-flap and the knife secured thereto, of the bent metal plate embracing the short side of the pouch, and the short plate secured to the outer part of said bent plate; substantially as described.
3. The combination with a tobacco-pouch provided with a folding closing-flap, and the knife secured to said iiap, of the metal plate bent over at the center forming two parts which embrace the short side of the pouch, the prongs at the lower end of one of said parts, passing through the material of the myoWn I have hereunto a'ixed mysignature pouch and through apertures in the other in presence of two Witnesses. part and then clinched, and the short plate having its sides bent over and engaged with GEORGE E. SIEBLER.
5 the edges of the outer part of said bent plate; llfitnesses:
substantially as described. GEORGE B. LEWIS,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as HARRY SMITH.
