ENVELOPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,598, dated March 25, 1884.

Application filed August 3i, T882. (ModeL) vention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to envelopes which are used in the transmission of articles by post,

express, 820., and which are not intended to be sealed or otherwise permanently closed; and the object thereof is to construct such envelopes so as to prevent the escape of the contents and to close the envelopes securely without the use of gum, wax, or other adhesive material, and in such a manner that the envelope can be easily opened for the inspection of its contents and quickly and securely re-- closed.

pasted together at the edges a; or they may be made of separate pieces and pasted together at the bottom and edges, if preferred. The front A is provided with an extension at the top, forming a flap, b, and the back has a similar extension, also forming a flap, 0. Between parts A A is alip, B, which has its bottom edge, cl, pasted to the front A at e, and its end edges pasted at the line 6, between the edges of the front and back; but above the line 0 the end edges of said lip 13 are pasted to the edges f f of part A only. Thus the mouth or opening 9 of the envelope is between the lip B and back A, and the parts h and b of the front A, above its connection at c with the lip 13, form simply a flap.

It is obvious that instead of putting the lip B in a separate piece the said lip may be formed of the front A by leaving off the flap or extension I), and the flap portions h b may be made of a separate piece and pasted to the front.

To close the envelope, the lip B ispressed againstthe adjacent part of the back A, the flap c is turned down over the lip B, and the outside flaps, 72. 1), are laid, against the folded end of flap c, and the flap b is folded over against the back of the envelope, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. This effectually closes the mouth of the envelope, and it is impossible for the contents to escape. As shown, the edges f f of part A are turned in and pasted down.

This is a preferred mode of making the envelope; but the edges may be pasted directly y to the edges of part A.

To fasten the flap 12 down, I provide a metal latch, i, which is swiveled in the back A, and the flap is provided with a slit, Z. When the flap is turned or folded, the end of the latch is turned up, passed through the slit Z, and then. turned to the pendent position it occupics in Fig. 4, whereby the flap is securely fastened.

In Fig. 6 is shown a modification of my improved envelope. In this case, instead of a flap, Z), I form on the extension of the front A a pocket, D, into which the folded flap 0 and closed mouth of the envelope are thrust and securely held. The flap 0 being held down over the mouth g and the lip B pressed against the opposite or adjacent part of the back A, it will be readily seen that the mouth is held firmly closed. At the same time the envelope can be quickly and easily opened without tearing any part of it, and reclosed without difficulty. i The above-described envelope is principally intended to be used unsealed but it can also be used as a sealed envelope for money and other valuables, in which case the inside flap, c, by closing the mouth 9, will effectually prevent access to the contents of the envelope.
