INVEN TUR 'trici-3..
ATENT CHARIJES M. CARNAHAN, OF NEIVPORT, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BOX AND FAST'ENING THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 633,356, dated September 19, 1899. Application led December 1'7, 1897. Serial No. 662,340. (No modeLl 'I'o all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. GARNAHAN, a citizenv of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes and Fastenings Therefor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates, primarily,to improvements in permanent and temporary tilingboxes for the tiling of letters and other papers; and it has for its object the novel construction of the box, which is rectangular in form, whereby the same and the fastenings therefor may be opened at its rear end and flattened ont for shipping purposes, and whereby the recipient of the box may instantly press it to box form and cause its rear end to become interlocked with the sides or topand bottom, according to the position in which the box is used, by means of self-interlocking metal reinforcing-plates, which serve not only to lock the box in its proper shape, but to stiifen and strengthen it. It is also applicable to other forms of boxes.
The novelty of my invention will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed ont in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a rear end view of my improved iling-boxn its flattened or knocked-down position for shipment. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective of the rear end of the box partially closed. Fig. 3 is a corresponding view with the rear end entirely closed and the parts interlocked. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective of the ends of the two interlocking metal strips. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional plan through the rear corner of the box, showing the position of the strips as they are brought into engagement and before they become interlocked. Fig. 6 is a corresponding view when the parts are interlocked. Fig. '7 is a diminished perspective showing the character of filing-box to which my invention is applicable, the interior le being partly withdrawn. Fig. S is a diminished perspective of another form of box embodying my invention.
`and bottom walls d c.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the iigures.
The box for a filing-box is preferably constructed of pasteboard or tar-board and has two equal-sized rectangular side walls a b, to which are hinged, preferably by pasted cloth strips c, the two rectangular equal-sized top As seen in Fig. 7, thc front of the box is entirely open to receive the temporary or permanent lef, after the manner of filing-boxes of this character. The
Aside wall a', as seen in Fig. 2, has a hinged flap g, which when the box is pressed from its fiattened condition, as shown in- Fig. l, to the rectangular position shown in Fig. 2 is turned down and entirely fills the rear end of the box. The opposite side wall b is likewise provided with a similar hinged flap 7L, which when turned up, as seen in Fig. 3, entirely covers the flap g and forms the outer end wall of the box.
The construction so far described is old and well known to the art, and the method heretofore employed to unite the end walls h when closed to the other walls of the boxes was by means of pasted strips similar to those shown at c.
I will now describe my improved means for uniting and interlocking the walls at the end of the box.
At each end of the'iiap h I attach a metal strip z', then at right angles and extending the width of the Hap. T he one angular portion of these strips have pressed out of them tangs j, which are inserted through the ap and clamped on its inner side to lock the strips to the flap, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and G. The other angular portion of these strips has pressed ont of it detent-hools k to engage similar detenta-hooks on metal strips Z, secured to the rear ends of the top and bottom walls d e. The strips Z are secured to the top and bottom walls (l c by fangs m, and their rear ends are bentaround the rear ends of said walls so as to lie flush against their inner sides and are again bent back,'as seen at n, to form a sheath or receptacle for that portion of the strip t' containing the detents 7c. Similar detents o are formed in the portion n of the strips I in line wit-h the detents 7o in ICO and can ship them in the knocked-down form shown in Fig. l, and the recipient or user can without loss of time press them up into box form and by closing down the vflap g form the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 to the position shown by the solid lines in said figure, and then by pressing up the Hap h to cause the strips il to beeomeinterlocked, as before described, the box is ready for use and its rear end is greatly strengthened.
In some eases the flap g might be dispensed with, and metal strips might be employed similar to the strips t' Zto unite the long edge of the iap 7L to the rear edge of the Side ct, as will be readily understood.
While'I have above described and shown the application of my invention to-paper-fil ing boxes, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such class of boxes nor to the material of which they are com posed, the only requisite being that the Walls shall be hinged together and provided at the corneredges with the interlocking metal strips t' Z in such manner that when the knoekdown blank isbrought to box formthese strips shall become interloeked to hold the box in its proper form and stiften and strengthen its edges, besides givingitan ornament-al appearance. In Fig. S I have shown an ordinary open-top box thus provided with the interlocking metal strips, and if a cover is desired therefor it may be constructed and united in a similar manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 4 l. In a box, the combination of the Walls a b d e the latter having secured te them metal strips l with a portion n provided with hookdetents o, the Hap 7L hinged to the rear edge' of the Wall b, and adapted to cover the rear end of the box and having secured to it metal strips i provided with hook-detents 7c adapted to engage the detents 0 when the flap 7L is brought up to close the box, substantially as described.
2. The combination With the Walls de pro@ vided with the meta-l stripsl secured thereto by self-contained tangs and having the sheath portion n provided with hook-detente o of the fiap h having the plate i secured thereto by tangs j and one portion of which plate is adapted to engage the sheath portion n and become interlocked therewith by means of hook-detente 7a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
