Application filed February 12, 1913.
To all elf/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES YARDUSKY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Castleton, Rensselaer county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Box, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a plan view of the blank showing my invention as applied to a cigarette box; Fig. 2 is a perspective of the blank partly folded; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the completed box with the Hap open and ready to receive its contents; Fig. is a longitudinal section with the contents in the box and with the flap closed; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section showing the box in open position so that the contents may be readily withdrawn, and Fig. 6 is a cross section of the box.
My invention relates to boxes and consists of a box made out of paper, leather or other flexible fibrous material which can be utilized for the purpose of making the desired article from a one-piece blank, and which, when the box is opened, projects the contents into accessible position. My invention is suitable for use in the manufacture of cigar and cigarette boxes, match boxes, boxes for playing cards, and for various other uses t0 which a box of the character which I shall hereinafter more particularly describe is especially suited.
eferring to the drawings, in which I have shown a cigarette box as one embodiment of my invention, the blank A is suitably scored to provide the following parts: the front 2 of the box, the side 8, the back 4, and the overlapping side portions 5 and 6, all of which provide the four sides of the box; attached to the front is a flap B, comprised of the bottom 7, the top or lid 8, the lip 9 and the connecting portion 10 between the top 8 and the bottom 7. The front 2 has a recess ll to enable the lip 9 to be easily raised, and the lower portion 12 of the front 2 is cored at 13, and the sides of the portion l2 are cut away from the rest of the blank, to give the necessary flexibility, in order to permit the bottom of the box to be pushed upwardly.
The box is assembled by folding over the front 2 the flap B, and the back 4 will then be folded over the part 10 somewhat as is Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, i944. Serial No. 747,854.
shown in Fig. 2. The overlapping sides 5 and 6 are then glued, sewed secured together and the box is then assembled a-nd ready for use, as is shown in Fig. 3. rI`he box may then be illed and the lip 9 tucked under the front 2, as is shown in ig. 4. When it is desired to open the box the recess ll permits the lip 9 to be readily released and the box is opened either by pulling on the lip 9 or by pressing on the bottom 7 of the box, thus raising the contents to such an extent that they are readily accessible, as is shown in Fig. 5.
The form of box which I have shown and described herein comprises a construction which is cheap and readily mac e, and with the greatest economy of material. For example, the ordinary cigarette box is comprised of two parts`an outer covering which has four sides and open ends, and an inner covering, which has four sides and two ends. It will therefore be seen that in this particular instance I have eliminated the material required for three of the sides and that my box has a double wall thickness only at the back of the box, instead of on all four sides. Moreover, a large number ot blanks can be cut from the same piece, since the blanks are L-shaped, and thus, when one blank is cut, the succeeding blank can be cut with very little waste.
Various modilications may be made in the box which I have shown and described herein, without departing from my invention, since what I claim is:
single piece box of fibrous material having a iiap connected with the remainder of the box on one side, the remaining sides of the flap being free, the said Hap being movable relatively to the remainder of the box and comprising the top and bottom and lower part of one of the exterior sides of the box when the box is closed, and the said lower part comprising the bottom of the box' when the box is opened, the contents being adapted to be raised. by the opening movement a distance at least equal to the depth of the box.
2. A single piece box of fibrous material having a iap connected with the remainder ot' the box on one side, the remaining sides of the flap being' free, the said liap being movable relatively to the remainder of the boX. a part of the flapV comprising in position a part of a side ot' the box,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for closed the c0ntents in such position in the same and in horizontal piane.
CHARLES YARDUSKY.
