FOLDING BOX OF CARDBOARD.

' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,072, dated June 8, 1897.

Application filed June 27, 1896. Serial No. 597,185. (No model.)

To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELII-IU O. Gannon, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Folding Box of Cardboard, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, in which similar figures of reference indicate like parts.

The invention relates to boxes for-holding cigarettes and matches 5 and its object is to provide a box so constructed as to form suitable and sufficient receptacles within itself both for the cigarettes and the matches.

The invention consists in the construction shown in the drawings.

Figure 1 is a plan of ablank of cardboard. Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the upper end of said blank after the same has been folded as hereinafter described, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view from the lower end of said blank after said folding. Figs. 3 and a are sections through the lines 3 and :1; shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of my improved box. The dotted lines in the drawin gs indicate where the cardboard-blank is to be folded.

To form my improved box, I proceed as follows: First the flap 6 is folded up at right angles to the plane of the bottom or back 1, so as to form one side of the box, Figs. 2, 5, and 6. This side 0 is the outer side of the cigarette portion of my improved structure. Second, the flap 7 is likewise folded up at right angles to the plane of 1 to form the other side of the box. This side 7 is the outer side of the match portion of my improved structure also. Third, the part 8 is then folded at right angles to '7, thereby forming the front or face portion, Fig. 2. Fourth, the part- 9 is then folded at right angles to 8, so as to form the inner side of both the match portion and the cigarette portion of my improved structure. Fifth, the part 10 is then folded at right angles to the part 9, and thereby forms the back of the match portion aforesaid, Fig. 2. The under side of said part 10 is to be glued or otherwise suitably attached to the part 1. The slotted

11, 12, and 13, Figs. 1, 3, 4., and 5, are then to be bent under at right angles, Figs. 3, 4, and 5, to form the lower end or bottom of the match portion. The sect-ions Figs. 3 and l show the construction. The under faces of the

3 and 5 are folded to form the upper or front covering of the cigarette-space. The construction thus formed, Figs. 2 and 5, is then inserted in the outer casing 14, Fig. 6, of cardboard. At 15,Fig. 6, is shown a sandpaper surface or any similar surface desired for use in lighting the matches. In this improved construction is comprised the cigarette space or box formed by the under portion 1, the

The above construction is very easily understood from the accompanying drawings.

The improved box may be made of some other easily-folded material than cardboard, if desired, and of course the construction shown is not necessarily for use in holding cigarettes and matches, although it is especially intended and adapted for such use or for small cigars and matches.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A blank for a folding box, comprising the bottom 1, the end flaps 2, 4c, turn-down

3, 5, side flap 6, and box-forming piece consisting of the side flap 7,'fiap 8 to form front of inner box, flap 9 to form side, flap 10 to form the back, flap 11 to form end thereof, with the tucks l2 and 18, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with a cigarette-slide, of a match-box formed, at one side of a folding blank, by the side flap 7 the front flap 8 at the side of the side flap 7, the inner side flap 9, the flap 10, adapted to form the back of an inner box, the end flap 11, and the
