Description

(No Model.) v
A. 0. JORDAN.
PAPER BOX. No. 370,483. Patented Sept. 27, 188'71 R w I X e UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR CLIFTON JORDAN, OF ERA, VIRGINIA.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,483 dated September 27, 1887.
Application filed July 1. 1887. Serial No. 243,121.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR GLIrToNJoR- DAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Era, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in paper boxesfor spool-cotton, matches, cigarettes, and other articles of manufacture; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper box embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the blank to form the body of the box. Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of folding the blank to form the body of the box. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view.
A represents ablank made of paste or card board. The said blank is provided at one end, near its opposite sides, with longitudinal parallel slits B.
0 represents longitudinal creases which align with the slits B.
D representsa crease which is made transversely across the blank at the inner ends of the slits B and at right angles thereto.
The parts between the slits B, the creases D, and the outer edges of the blanks form corner flaps, E.
F represents side flaps formed between the creases O and the outer edges of the blank. That portion of the blank, at the end thereof, between the slits B and the crease D forms the end flap, G, and on the outer edge of the end flap is a re-enforce end flap, H, divided from the flap G by a crease, I, and at the outer edge of theflap H, at the center thereof, is formed a tongue, K.
L represents a short transverse slit made in the central or bottom portion, M, of the blank near the crease D, on the inner side thereof.
In order to form the body of the joox, the flap G is first bent up to a vertical position on the end of the bottom M. The side flaps, F, are then turned up to a vertical position, and the corner flaps, E, are turned inward on the crease D at right angles to the side flaps and bear against the inner side of the end flap, G. The re-enforce flap H is then turned down (No model.)
against the inner sides of the flaps E and G, thus firmly securing the corner flaps, E, between the end G and flap H, and the tongue K is bent rearward from the end flap, H, and inserted through the slit L, thus fastening the parts of the body of the box in position without the use of glue or paste, and enabling the body of the box to be flattened out and packed in a small space for transportation or storage. The distinguishing feature of this invention is that the slots L are made in the bottom of the box, near to but not at the ends thereof, and that the tongues K are extended rearward when the blank is folded and caused to en gage the slits, and thereby firmly brace the ends of the box against outward pressure.
I have herein illustrated and described only one end of the body of the box; but it will be understood that both ends thereof will be formed alike.
The box may be provided with a cover or lid made in the usual manner, or with the slip sleeve or band N, (shown in Fig. 1,) now in common use, as I do not limit myself in this particular.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A paper-box body having its sides provided with projecting corner flaps, E, to bear against the inner sides of the ends, and the ends provided with extended re-enforce flaps H, adapted to fold down on the inner sides of the ends and corner flaps, to secure the same in place, and provided, further, with projecting locking-tongues K, extended rearward from the end flaps and engaging slits L in the bottom of the box, near the ends thereof, substantially as described.
2. A blank to form the body of a paper box, comprising the bottom M, having the slits L near the ends thereof, the side flaps, F, the corner flaps, E, and the end flap, G, having the projecting reenforce flaps H on its outer edge, said re-enforce flaps being provided with the tongues K, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR CLIFTON JORDAN.
