Description

IMO. 540,557. Patented Jan. 2, H900. W. G. HAAS. KNOCIKDUWN PAPER BOX.
(Application filed Sept. 2, 1899.)

MNUCMDUWN PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,557, dated January 2, 1900. Application filed September 2, 1899. Serial No. 729,287. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LlVALTER G. HAAS, a citizen of the United Etates, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in knockdown paper boKesft-he features of which will be fully hereinafter described and then claimed.
The objects of my invention are the construction of a box which will be firm at the corners and the several sections so formed that the b0): may be readily formed from the prepared blank. The objects are accomplished by the form of blank illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is the blank as prepared to form the body of the box. Fig. 2 is quite identical with Fig. 1 with side and end flaps to stiffen the parts. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the formed box with a portion cut away to exhibit an inner corner.
The letters and numerals designate like parts in the several views.
I am aware that slots and flaps to engage them are used in a variety of ways to join the parts of a paper box; but it is believed that the paper box as herein described presents features that are novel.
At Fig. 1 is shown a paper blank that is scored to facilitate bending, said scores being indicated by the several dotted lines crossing the blank longitudinally, transversely, and obliquely. A is the part of the blank forming the bottom, B B the sides, and O O the ends. These parts form an oblong square and have at the corners sections 6 and 5, the latter adapted to enter the slots. The two sections 7 and 8 comprise the corner fold and are scored at an angle of forty-five degrees.
The sides and corner-sections are provided with the slots 1 2 and 3 at, and the former two and the latter two register when folded, and in this position flaps 5 may enter said slots to bind the parts. The relation of these parts in the form of a box is shown in Fig. 3.
The blank represented at Fig. 2 is identical with that of Fig. 1, with the exception of the end flaps E E and the side fiapsD D. These flaps are turned down against their respective sides for the purpose of stiffening the same. These parts are partly covered by the corner folds to secure them in place. The flaps E E are separated down to the score by slits inclined outward and thereby are formed the angular corners 9 9, and these are bent at a right angle to further stiffen the corners. The side flaps D D are cut away at their corners to not interfere with the slots in the sides. The manner of folding to form the box is sufficiently manifest from the previous description.
A cover may be formed identical with the body, only slightly increased in size sufficient to slip over the latter.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The knockdown paper boX comprising the blank having a quadrangular bottom side and end sections for the body, the corner folds, the covering-flaps to which is formed the entering flap adapted to enter the slots in the corner fold and side, substantially as shown and described.
2. The knockdown paper box comprising the blank havinga quadrangular bottom, side and end sections each with stiifening-fiaps adapted to be turned down against their respective sides, the covering-flap on which is formed the entering flap adapted to enter the slots in the sides and corner folds, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
