`UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN I-I. NEWTON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR T0 NATIONAL PAPER BOX COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
DISPLAY BOX.
Application led October 8,1923. Serial No. 667,164.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN H. NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Boxes; and I do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to displayboxes and particularly to a display box for containing confections, the primary object being to provide a box in which the confections may be shipped, and which will also serve as a display container. The box is preferably constructed of liexible material such as paper board or similar material, and it is provided with a top or cover from which braces may be cut to engage the box proper r so that the lid and cover may be held in open position.
The novel construction of the invention will be apparent by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the ope box;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a plan of the blank, showing the cover atttached thereto; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional view through the open box.
The box is shown as consisting of a blank scored to provide a bottom, 1, a front wall, 2, rear wall, 3, and end walls, 4 and 5; the front wall is provided with a flap, 6, having at its longitudinal edge an extension, 7.
The flap, 6, is provided with notched or cut out portions, 8 and 9, and in the end of the iiap, 6, are tongues, and 11. At the ends of the front wall, 2, are flaps, 12 and 13, corresponding to flaps, 14 and 15, on the ends of the back of the box. The ends, 4 and 5, are provided with flaps, 16 and 17, having extensions, 18 and 19. Secured to the back wall, 3, of the box, in any appropriate manner is a flap, or extension, 20, with top, or cover, 21. The lower edge of the Hap, 20, is provided with notched corners, 22 and 23. The flap, 20, may be secured to the back of the box in any appropriate manner, but I have shown it as secured thereto by staples, 24, although I do not wish to be limited to any particular form o-f fastening. Arcuate or curved side brace members, 25 and 26, are cut out from the top, 21,`and the flap, as will be clearly seen in Fig. 1, the braces have' offset or shouldered ends, 27 and 28, the extreme ends being adapted to engage slots, 29 and 30, formed along the score lines, 31 and 32, dividing the ends, 4 and 5, from the iaps, 16 and 17. 'Ihe ends of the top, 21, are shown as provided with flaps, 33 and 34, and there is a front iap, 35, on the cover, or lid, 21. The front is formed by folding the front and the rear walls along their respective score lines so that they will assume a vertical position. The flaps, 12, 13, 14, and 15, are then bent inwardly; that is, 12 and 14 are bent one toward the other, and 13 and 15 are likewise bent, sothat they overlap. The liap, 6, is then bent downwardly so that its extension rests on the bottom 0f the box with the tongues, 10 and 11, lying against the naps, 12 and 14, at one end and 13 and 15 at the other. The extensions, 18 and 19, rest on the floor or bottom of the box, where they are held by the notched portions, 8, 9, 23, and 22. The box is now complete; the lid or cover can be folded down over the box proper in the usual way. When it is desired to display the contents of the box, the lid will be tilted upwardly to the box, (shown in Fig. 1), the stays or braces, and 26, will be folded outwardly away from the top of the box, so that their extremities will engage the slots, 29 and 30, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, so that the lid of the box is placed in open position with respect to the main box portion. The extensions, 18 and 19, which engage in the notched portions, 8, 9, 22, and 23, form a lock so that the main portion of the box is fastened together without the necessity of stapling or pasting.
The box is rigid in construction and makes a very satisfactory shipping box which can be easily converted into a display box by causing the cover to swing to the position shown in Fig. 1.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A display box having a bottom, Va front v slits,
Wall, a back Wall, `end Walls and a cover connected to the rear Wall by a fold, the end Walls having double thicknesses with slits in their upper edges, curved'stay members cut from Within the perimeter of the cover having tongue-s engageable with the and projections adjacent to 'the tongues overlapping the edges of the end Walls to support the coveri-n aver/tical -p'osition.
y2, A display box havinga bottom, a front Wall, ka back wall, end Walls and a cover connected to the rear Wall by a fold, the end Walls having double thicknesses with slits lin their upper edges,'curved stay memberscut from Within Vthe perimeter oi' the 'cover having tongues engageable With the slits, `and projections adjacent to the tongues overlapping the vedges of the 'end "f" walls to supportthe'cover in a vertical position, the stay members closing the 'cut out portions of the cover When the cover is folded down upon the boX.
3. A display box having a bottom, va front Wall, a back Wall, and endV Walls having double thicknesses with slits in their upper edges, a cover having a flap distinguished from the cover by a score line, mea-ns securing the flap to the rear Wall, and stay members cut from the cover and part of the flap having tongues 'which lie in the flap when the cover isclosed Yto maintain the ystay members in the plane of 'the cover, said tongues being Areceivable in the slits when the cover is in a vertical :posi- I' tion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDVIN Il. NEWTON.
