UNITED STATES I 1,546,318 PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK ARTHUR ROSE, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO MEMPHIS PAPER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF TENNESSEE.
BOX.
Application filed December 12, 1923. Serial No. 680,235.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK ARTHUR Rosa, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to a collapsible box and it is an object thereof to provide a box which may be folded into small compass for transportation or storage and which when open shall provide a strong and rigid container for various ojects.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Flgure 1 is a perspective of my device in open position,
Figure 2, a. perspective of the cover therefor Figure 3, a plan showing the box partly folded,
Figure 4:,a section on line 44 of Fig ure 3 Figure 5, a section of the box completely collapsed,
Figure 6, a detail of a corner thereof,
Figure 7, a top plan of a modified form,
Figure 8 a section on line 8-8 of Figure 7.
Figure 9, a top plan of still another modifled form, and
Figure 10, a section on line 1010 of Figure 9.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates the lower' portion of a box adapted to be closed by a cover 11. The lower part or box proper comprises a part bent to form a plurality of walls 12 which are crimped or bent up at the lower end as at 13 to PI'OVldG a holding groove for the lower bent edge 14 of the bottom which is in two sections 15, 15 connected by a flap 16 which may be integral with one section and glued to the adjacent edge of the other. The flap in the present instance consists of the forward or inner edge .of the right hand section 15 and this is cut to provide an independent crescent-shaped flap 17 at the middle adapted to lie underneath a flap 18 on the left-hand section 15. These flaps provide convenient means for pulling up the bottom to collapse the box and also provide automatic interlocking means for holding the bottom down in place when a parcel or other object rests on the bottom. The top edges of the side wallsare bent over at 19 as shown for additional strength.
Figure 5 shows the box fully folded, the purpose of this figure being to show the compact fiat form into which the same falls when closed.
The lid 11 has a fold line 20 and has bent down edges 21 corresponding to the walls 12. The bent over or crimped edges 19 of the box proper are separate from each other but the edges of the lid are connected by clips or adhesive or any other convenient means and fold lines are formed between them as at 22 and 23. Therefore it will be seen that when the lid is bent at 20 the edge portions will be drawn together and will lie fiat against the outer face of the folded lid.
Any convenient means may be provided for holding the lid on the box. In the present form I have provided'cords 241 and 25 (preferably in the form of ribbons) at opposite corners of the box opposite the ends of the fold line in the bottom thereof. Each of these ribbons is attached to the box by passing it through two holes at a distance from the respective corner and they may be provided with hooks and eyes or other means for fastening them together if desired. In
the present embodiment a hook on one ribbon hooks over the other. It will be seen that the lines of the ribbon will cross each other when secured together and preferably the lid will be placed on the box in such a way that the ribbons will cross the fold line of the same thus acting to hold the box against accidental collapse and also holding the lid both against removal and against collapsing action leading to separation of .the lid from the box.
In the modified form of Figure 7, the outer part of the box and the lower interlocking margins are the same as in the modification heretofore described. The bottom is formed in two sections 15 as in Figure l and the inner edges of the sections are so divided that a flap 26 of the right-hand section projects over the left-hand section while a similar flap 27 of the lefthand sec tion projects over the right-hand section; i. e. the flaps are reversely arranged to provide a double interlocking action, automatic or substantially so. As in Figure 1 the flaps underneath flaps 2G and 27 are formed with a fold line running parallel to their inner edges and are pasted each to the opposite section. The lower flap in each case is out along the arc of a circle at 2 and folded along line 29 to provide a flap 30 ly ng against the underside of the corresponding flap 26 or 27 but disconnected therefrom. It may be noted that in each of the forms shown one crimped edge of each bottom section is preferably permanently secured between the corresponding Wall and the crimped edge 13 of said wall as by means of glue or other conventlonal or desirable means.
In the modification of Figure 9 the parts are similar to those hitherto described excepting the joint between the sections. In this form the bottom sections are made 1n 2. single piece having the fold line or crease concealed by a strip of cardboard or other material and a flap 32 is cut out of the bot tom, this flap being adapted to extend over the strip 31 for the purpose hitherto clescribed. The strip 31 is glued or otherwise connected to the right hand member 15" of the bottom and extends over the opening formed by cutting the fia 32.
WVhile I have describe a preferred form of my invention and certain modifications thereof it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the same may be modified in various other ways all without departing from the spirit of the invention, the'true scope of which is shown in the appended claims, and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A collapsible bo-x comprising a plurality of side walls, a'bottom therefor adapted to fold on a line extending between two opposed corners of the box, and means for locking the box in open position including interlocking flaps at the adjacent edges of the bottom sections, substantially as set forth.
2. A collapsible box comprising six or more side walls, a bottom therefor adapted to fold on a line extending between two opposed corners of the box, and means for locking thebox-in open position including interlocking flaps at the adjacent edges of the bottom sections, substantially as set forth.
8. A collapsible box comprising a plurality of side Walls, a bottom therefor adapted other, a bottom therefor adapted to fold on I a line extending between two opposed corners of the box, and means for locking the box in open position including interlocking flaps at the adjacent edges of the bottom sections, substantially as set forth.
5. A collapsible box comprising a plurality of side walls, a bottom therefor adapted to fold on a line extending between two opposed corners of the box, means for looking the box in open position including a crescent-shaped flap at an'intermediate point of the inner edge of one section adapted to fold over the adjacent edge of the other section, and a flap on the last named section adapted to fold over the first-named flap. to form a double loc'k, substantially as set forth.
6. A collapsible box comprising a plurality of walls and a folding bottom secured at opposite edgcs to two of said walls said bottom having interlocking flaps at the adjacent edges of the bottom sections, substantially as setforth.
7 A collapsible box comprising a plurality of walls and a folding bottom secured at opposite edges to two of said walls said bottom having revcrsely arranged interlocking flaps, and separate crescent shaped flaps on one margin each underlying the margin of a flap on the other bottom section, substantiall y as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Memphis, Tennessee, this 30th day of November, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-three.
