' 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in paper boxes.
Heretofore paper boxes have generally been constructed in conformity with two prevailing types, namely the tray type and the tube type. In the tray type wherein the paperboard, cardboard, or' equivalent material is cut and scored to provide a bottom with sides foldabie upwardly therefromthe boxes usually have the advantage of being capable of being shipped and stored in a conventional flat or knocked-down position. These boxes, however, are subject to the disadvantage that-generally speaking they are weak against lateral pressures imposed on the sides. The tube type of box wherein the paperboard, cardboard, or equivalent material is formed into a tube that provides the sides of the box and which has flaps at the top and bottom which mutually cooperate to close the ends of the tube possess the advantage of having the sides adequately strong against expansive pressures, but the. disadvantages of having the top and bottom relatively weak and the disadvantage that this type of box cannot be generally shipped or stored as conveniently as the tray type of box.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved type of paper box wherein advantages of the tray type of box and of the tube type of box are combined enabling the boxes to 1 be shipped or stored in a flat or knocked-down condition; enabling the boxes to be easily, conveniently, and quickly set up and providing a setup box structure which is adequately strong against lateral pressures on the applied to the contained contents.
More specifically, an object of the invention is to provide a paper box consisting of a tray type blank which provides a bottom and upwardly foldable sides and which has a tube or band which cooperates with the upwardly foldable sides to reenforce them and adequately hold them in proper position against the lateral pressures applied thereto by the contained contents.
Another object of the invention is to'provide a box having a cover, the box having closed side walls of double thickness between which flaps of the cover may be inserted and the box having end walls at the top of which there are ledges of adequate area covered or overlapped by the ends of the cover a sufficient distance so as to prevent theescape of the contents between the ends of the cover and the top of the end walls.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifesti n the following detailed description and specifically pointed out sides Ofth box in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:

Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the body of the improved box is formed 01' a blank of cardboard, paperboard, or equivalent material which is cut and scored so as to provide a bottom ill with opposed side walls It and i2 foldable upwardly from the sides of thebottom and opposed end walls i3 and I4 foldable upwardly from the ends of the bottom.
A pair of opposed scoring lines l5 and I6 define infolding sides I! and I 8 from the end walls I3 and M, respectively. A tube type of band is provided having opposed sides i9 and of substantially the same height as the side walls II and I2, but preferably slightly longer than the side walls. This band also has end walls 2i and 22 that are defined from the side walls such as by scoring lines 23 and which are substantially the same height as the end walls l3 and H are slightly longer than the end walls. The side walls I9 and 20 of the band or tube are preferably notched as at 24. This band may be formed of a single strip of cardboard, paperboard, or the like, the ends of which are connected together such as by a glue flapfl.
In the preferred form of construction, the side edges or the side walls II and I 2 are notched as 3 indicated at 26, the depths of the notches bein approximately equal to the thickness of the material utilized informing the box. These notches are equal in length to narrow tongues 2'5 that are formed on the side edges of the in-folding sides I! and id. The tube or band that provides the sides l9 and 20 and the ends at and 22 is preferably, but not necessarily secured to one'of the sides, such as the side l2. Thus, the side 20 The above described box possesses most of the advantages of the tray type of box in that it may be shipped or stored in a flat condition and easily and quickly set up. It is advantageous over the conventional tray type of box in' that the sides are effectively reenforced against outward spreading by the band which encircles sides .II and If. The ends of thebox which are foldable over the ends of the band are also effectively reenforced by the band. The improved box is thus of a quite sturdy construction when set up, there being double thicknesses at the side walls and three thicknesses at each end. When the cover is applied the side flaps thereof which are inserted between sides i2 and Z0 and I l and is form the third thickness at the sides of the box.
In Figs. 6 and 7 there is illustrated a modified form of the invention wherein the band and body of the box. may be shipped and stored separately or independently; In this form of construction r the band comprises a back wall equipped with sides I! and I8 are all in the plane of the bottom panel Ill. The tube or band which has its side 20 secured against the outer face of side I! is collapsed as shown in Fig. 1.
In setting up the box, side it is first folded upwardly with respect to the'bottom panel Id. Side l2 isthen folded upwardly and the tube or 'band shifted from its collapsed position to its expanded position. In erecting side 12 the tube or band is swung downwardly over the upwardly bent side ll so that the side' I9 of the tube or band is positioned against the outer face of side II. The end walls i3 and it may then be bent upwardly and the in-folding sides if and I8 may then be swung over the tops of the ends 2| and 22 of the band. In so doing, the material forming the ends of the blank is folded on both score lines 15 and I6 so that the space therebetween 'forms a ledge indicated at 3! of considerable area at the top of each end of the box.
On-folding the in-folding sides l1 and it downwardly the tongues 2'5 are caused to enter the recesses 26 at the ends of the sides ii and I! so as to interlock therewith and thus retain the in folding sides in position.
The cover may then have its side flaps 30 folded downwardly with respect to the cover panel 28 and 4 these side flaps can then be inserted between side 12 and side 20 andside I! and side 89 respectively. The notches 2B in the sides is and 20 facilitate flexing the sides I! and I2 inwardly so as to space them from the tube or band sufficiently to facilitate the entry of the side flaps. The attaching means, such as glue or staples when employed that attaches side 28 to side i2, is preferably so positioned with relation to the corners of the side flaps 30 as not to interfere with the insertion of these flaps. While it is desirable to have the tube or band fastened to side I? in order to keep the two blanks of the box permanently associated this is not necessary as in some instances the body of the boxes may be shipped or stored in the form of two completely detached blanks that can be assembled together in substantially the same manner a above described.
As will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 5, the ledge 8i between adjacent score lines It and i6 is overlapped by the ends of the cover panel 28 to a considerable extent. Consequently, leakage of the contents of the box between the coverand theends of the box is effectively prevented regardless of how the box may be positioned in handling.

The body of the box illustrated in Fig. 7 comprises a bottom 43 having sides 44 and 45;foldable upwardly therefrom. The ends of the bottom have end walls 46 and 41 foldable upwardly from the bottom and these ends have infolding sides 48 and 49 defined therefrom by spaced fold lines 50 and 5i. 7
In assembling the box of this type of construction the sides 44 and 45 are first bent upwardly from the bottom. The band is opened into direct angular position shown and is slipped or tele-' scoped over these upstanding sides. The ends 46 and 41 are then bent upwardly against the outer faces of the ends 36 and 31 and the infolding sides 48 and 49 are then folded inwardly against the inner facesof the ends 36 and -3'I. The spaced fold lines 50 and 5! provide the ledges at the ends of the box having the same function as above described.
The sealing flap 4! is receivable between the front wall 45 of th box and the front wall 38 of the band. In this form of construction it" will be appreciated that the two side walls of the box cut and scored from a single blank. In that form of construction the blank provides a bottom 50 at the front and back of which there are upwardly. foldable sides 5i and 52 respectively.
At the ends of the bottom 50 there are upwardly foldable ends 53 and 54 which are equipped with infolding sides 55 and 56 which are defined from the ends by the parallel fold lines 51. Theends' of the rear side '52 have integral therewith ends I58 and 59 and a forward side 60 is integral with the end 59. The free end edge of this forward slide is attachable to end 58 such as by glue flap 8 A cover 82 equipped with a sealing flap 63 is integral with the top edge of side 52. In this form of construction the blank may be shipped in completely open position and a short time prior to use glue flap 6i attached to the end of If desired, however, glue flap 8| may be attached to forward the forward side of the-band.

The improved box may be advantageously used for many purposes. It has been primarily designed for use as a shoe box but may be used for many purposes desired. When utilized to hold finely divided substances the broad engagement between the ledges 3| and the cover effectively prevents leakage between the cover and the ends of the box. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, the cover may be opened from either side by merely extracting the sealing fiap 30 this side and leaving the other sealing flap in position. The cover may then hinge relatively to the sealing flap that is left in position. It is not essential that the infolding sides I? and it be equipped with tongues 21 or that the sides H and it be equipped with complementary recesses 26. Thus in the constructions shown in Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, these tongues and recesses are illustrated as omitted. The tongues and recesses corresponding to these tongues and recesses may be used on the constructions shown in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive if desired. 7
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined appended claims, wherein I claim:
1. A paper box having a bottom, sides foidable upwardly therefrom, means providing a band extending from one side to encircle the other, ends foldable upwardly from the bottom against the outer faces of the ends of the band. and
in the encircling bandhaving opposed sides and ends,
- and a bottom having at least one side foldable upwardly therefrom adapted to be positioned against the inner face of one side of the band, said bottom having outer ends foldable upwardly therefrom adapted to be positioned against the outer faces of the ends of the band, and. infolding ends foldable from said outer ends adapted to be positioned against the inner faces of the ends of the band and against said side foldable upwardly from the bottom positioned against the inner face of one side of the band.
3. A paper box comprising means providing an encircling band having opposed sides and ends,
and a bottom having at least one side foldable upwardly therefrom adapted to be positioned against the inner face of one side of the band, said bottom having outer ends foldable upwardly therefrom adapted to be positioned against the outer faces of the ends of the band, and infolding ends ioldable from said outer ends adapted to be positioned against the inner faces of the ends of the band and against said side foldable upwardly from the bottom and positioned against the inner face of one side of the band, said infolding ends being defined from saidouter ends by spaced parallel fold lines so that the material between the fold lines forms ledges projecting inwardly from the tops of said outer ends of the box.
