rrien TATES ROBERT GAIR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 644,857, dated March e, 1906. Application filed November 3, 1898. Serial No. 695,389 (No model.)
To aZZ whom it eta/y concern.- I
Be it known that I, ROBERT GAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,
borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Paper Boxes;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same. I
The improvements embraced in my invention have-reference to that class of paper boxes I known in the trade as folding boxes and wherein the blank which forms said box is cut in a single piece from paper, cardboard,
and like flexible materials, so as to provide the several parts of the box-viz., the bottom, sides, ends, and cover, a pasting-flap, and a tucking-tongue to hold the cover closed,whereby when the blank is made up the box is adapted to be folded on lines scored or creased in the ends and sides thereof-to putitin a more or less flat form for packing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the blank from which the box is made. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box with the cover open. Fig. 3 illustrates the box when folded, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the folded box on line a: :r of Fig. 3 and drawn on an enlarged scale. k
In a practical application of my invention a blank is cut and scored or creased substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1, whereby there is produced the box sides R I and ends G A, body-laps O O O 0, bottom B, top or cover E, tongue-flap T, and turn-over end flaps R R. The blank is creased or scored to provide folding-lines on which the parts of the blank that form the body of the box are bent up into position to form the box, and also to provide flexible lines or hinge like joints upon which the several portions of the box are manipulated to fold it to a flat form. The creasing or scoring of the blank is made on the lines 1 2 3 A to permit the sides R I and ends G A to be bent up at right angles to the bottom B; the line 5 5 to permit the body-laps O O to be turned or bent at right angles to the side R 5 the lines 6 6 to permit the body-laps O O to be turned or bent at right angles to the side I the line 7 to permit the top cover E to be the flaps R R and the side I.
swung or turned down to close the box or up and back to uncover it;- on the line 8 to permit the tongue T to be turned or bent at right angles to the cover and to adapt it to be in 'serted between the turnaover flaps R R and the side I to hold the cover down; on the diagonal lines 9 1 0 in the ends G A and the turnover flaps'R R to permit the ends and turnover flaps to be bent inward onthe diagonal lines to form bellows folds, so that the sidel may be pressed down toward the side It and cover E; on the lines 11 12 topermit the turn over flaps R R to be bent over at right angles to the ends G G, and on the diagonal lines 13 14c to permit the parts X Xof the side hand or by any other method, and the blank may be converted into a box and folded in the following manner: The sides It I andends G A are bent up at right angles to the bottom B and the ends and sides fastened together by pasting the laps O O to the side R and the laps O O to the side I. This completes the box; but when it is filled and it is desired to close it the turn-over flaps R R are turned down on the contents of the box, the cover is then closed down over the flapsR R, and the tongue T tucked in between the ends of To fold the box, the cover is turned back and then the ends G A are pressed inward toward each other, whereby they are caused to bend on the diagonal lines 9 10 and turn on the lines 5 5 and on the lines 6 6, and at the same time their connection with the side I causes the parts X X of this side to be bent inward against the side I, which is thereby thrown outward in line with the bottom B, and the bottom B is bent or turned on the line 1 until both it and the sideI are parallel to the side R and cover E, as shown in Fig. 4. To open the box, these movements are reversed-that is, the bottom is opened out at right angles to the side R, whereby the ends GAare thrown outward at right angles to the side R and the front is brought up at right angles to the bottom, as seen in Fig. 2, where it is held by the ends G A.
When the box is unfolded preparatory to filling, the flaps R R are turned over at right angles to the ends, thus bending the creased lines 9 10, and the ends are prevented from collapsing or bendinginward. Furthermore, the said flaps when bent over extend between the front and back sides of the box, and when the cover is closed down and the tongue T thrust between the ends of the said flaps and the front side of the box they brace the box sides and ends and also hold the tongue in place and prevent the cover from opening.
I claim v The herein-described paper box, the same consisting of the side R with flaps O, 0, side I with flaps O O and diagonal-scored lines 13 14, ends A, G, flaps R R with diagonal scored lines 9 1O crossing said ends and flaps,
cover E and tongue T, the sides and ends being connected together by the flaps O, O, O O, the flaps being adapted to be bent over at right angles to the ends to brace the ends and sides and to hold the tongue T of the cover in place, and the box adapted to be folded fiat by bending the flaps R R upward and the ends inward on the diagonal-scored lines 9 10, and the side I on the diagonal lines 13 14, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the invention above setforth I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT GAIR.
