Description

(No Model.) A J F. GQHOTGHKISS. I v PAPEBL'BOX. No. 413,784. Patented Oct. 29, 188-9.
V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK G. I-IOTCHKISS,'OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
P'APER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,784, dated October 29, 1889.
Application filed October 29, 1888. Renewed September 25, 1889. Serial No. 324,996. (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. HOTCH- KISS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of boxes or receptacles which are madefrom paper or similar material, and which are adapted to be flattened out for packing and transportation and to be readily foldedinto shape for use by the person who has occasion to employ them. Such boxes are used by retail dealers in candies, &c. a
The object of my invention is to provide such a box with integral covering-flaps and cover-fastening devices, whereby, when the box is folded and filled, it may be compactly closed or covered, so that the contents cannot escape.
My invention will be hereinafter fully described, and its novel features carefully defined in the claim.
In the drawings which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure *1 is a plan View of the flattened box'or box-blank; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box as it appears when folded or nearly folded into shape to form a-receptacle, but before the cover-flaps are folded down.
The box is cut from a single sheet of paper or like material and properly creased for folding. In Fig. 1 the dotted lines represent the creases, the full lines show the box-blank as finished for the trade, and the broken lines (dot and dash) designate the outlines of certain parts of the blank before they have been folded in, as will be hereinafter described.
1 represents the rectangular bottom of the box? 2 2 represent the ends or shorter sides of the box.
3 3' represent the longer sides of the box.
At the corners of the box the adjacent sides and ends are connected by gussets, each of which is divided by a diagonal crease into two triangular plies e 4-. hen the boxblank is made, the ends 2 2 and the gussets are folded over inward upon the bottom and v slit 7 in the side 3'.
sides 3 3, as indicated by the full lines in Fig. 1, and the ply 4 of each gusset is cemented or otherwise securely attached to the the ends or shorter sides 2 2 will also assume an upright position. Fig. 2 illustrates this operation quite clearly, the view showing one side 3' upright and the other side 3 only partly upright or in place.
When the box-blank is formed into a receptacle in this manner, the several shorter coverflaps are folded in and the main flap 6 folded down on the box. This main cover-flap 6 is secured by means of a hook 7 thereon, which is made to engage a suitable The box will then be firm and stiff and securely closed, so that its contents cannot possibly escape.
The box may be square instead of oblong, and the minor cover-flaps 5 5 and 6 may be of any suitable width. I prefer to cut the box-blank entire from a single sheet of paper, but it might of course be made from .pieces secured together by cement or the like in a permanent-manner. In any case the box as furnished to the trade will be in one piece.
The plies 4: of the several gussets are cemented to the box-sides; but other means for permanently securing them may also be employed.
I do not claim herein the inwardly-folded corner-gussets, as these are not new; but
What I do claim is As an improved article of manufacture, a folding box made from paper in one piece and consisting of the rectangular bottom, the sides 2 2, each having a cover-flap 5 on" its edge, the side 3, having on its edge the main cover-flap 6, the side 3', having onit-s edge the cover-flap 6, and the corner-gussets, each On the margin of divided by a crease into two plies 4 and 4', my name in the presence of two subscribing the plies 4 being permanently secured to the Witnesses. box sides, which they overlap, said cover-flap FREDERICK G. IIOTCIIKISS. 6 belng provided wlth a hook which engages 5 a slit in one side of the box when the box is XVitnesses:
closed. HENRY CONNETT,
I11 witness whereof I have hereunto signed J. D. OAPLINGER.
