FOLDING PAPER BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. PETIER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Anselmo, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of boxes made of flexible material, and is especially designed for the manufacture of rectangular boxes adapted to contain cakes and the like.
It consists in the formation of a blank properly scored and foldable to forma box.
It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the acompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the blank. Fig. 2 shows the blank with the ends 2 folded inwardly to lie fiat upon the main'portion. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the corners, including the sides, ends and foldable angular reinforce. Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing the box partly folded.
Fig. 5 is a View of the box complete, with cover partly closed.
For the manufacture of a. box of this do scription, I employ cut-out blanks of pasteboard or similar stiff, flexible material to form a bottom A and a cover B. With the bottom of the box are formed the sides 2 and ends 2', scored, as at 3, so as to be easily folded from their original flat condition to form the vertical sides. The joining of the meeting angles .is effected by means of rectangular ends, as at 4, which are in line with the ends 2* of'the boxand are separated from the sides 2 by slits, as at 5. These ends 4 are scored, as at 6, in lines diagonal from the bottom of the box to the opposite corner of the portion 4. The slits 5 and the score 3 allow the end portions 2 to be first turned up into a vertical position; the part 4 being at the same time folded so as to extend inside of the sides 2. The triangular portions of the part 4, shown in Fig. 1, extending from 6 to 5, will then have one of the straight sides resting upon the bottom of the box and .the other one Vertical therewith.
These triangular portions are then glued or pasted downagainst the side of the box, thus holding the parts together, and the diagonal score 6 allows the outer portion of the triangle to remain free, as shown plainly in Fig. 4.. In this condition the sides'may be flattened down; the scores 6 of the corners allowing the outer portions of these corners to be flattened down so that the sides and ends lie upon the bottom, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 4. i
The cover of the box is formed of the main section B of a size suflicient to cover the box portion when the sides of the latter are upright. The cover portion has sides .8 extending beyond the bottom line and having- It will be seen that the sections 4, formed between the'box and the cover and scored similarly to those at the outer end of thebox, will allow the cover to be turned over and folded fiat upon the bottom A. This enables many boxes to be piled up in a flat condition which occupy but little space.
To assemble the box it is only necessary to turn the folded sides up about the scores 6 of the corner portions. Then in a similar -manner, 'after the contents have been inclosed, the cover is turned overthe box. This provides a simple, readily formed box using a .minimum amount of material, and the box is easily assembled for use.
Having thus described my invention, what T elaim'and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut is A folding paper box consisting of a-lalank scored to form a bottom, an outer end and sides for the bottom, a cover with an inner end connecting the cover and bottom, sides on the cover and a-fiap on the cover, the extremities of the inner end having a pair of parallel slits andthe outer end having a single slit at each extremity thereof, said slitted portions on the opposite sides of the blank being &iagona11y scored in opposite directions to form free triangular parts which are secured to the inner faces of the sides at points between the extremities of the sides whereby the latter will project over and extend beyond the slitted parts and will be engaged by the sides of the cover when the box 1s assembled.
