The invention is fully described in the jects toward the adjacent tongue 5 of the body section A and is separated from the following specilication, and While, in its broader aspect, it is capableof embodiment end of Jr'lie part C by a. space l2. The tongues ll are O-fless width than the sides Topall whom t may concern.'
Be it vknown that I, GEORGE L. MORRISON, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Paper-Board Box; and I do declare in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,` l
Figure l is a View of the box blank, Fig. box in folded form with the sections thereof in partly open position. Fig.4 3 is a rear perspective view of the box with the rear end of one side. oi. the cover partly sprung outward from its interengaged position with the adjacent corner portion of the box. Fig. 4t is a front perspective view of the box in closed position with a part broken away, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the box collapsed in condition for storage or shipment.
The blank from which the box embodying the invention is formed, comprises the at l2, for the purpose hereinafter described.
To form the blank into a box, the sides l and front 2 of the section and the sides 7 and front S of the section B are turned up at right angles to the respective sections along the respective scorings Aor fold lines n, a. and Z), 7/ and secured in such position by the lapping` of the tongues 3 either in front or rear of the front 2 of the body section and bythe lapping of the tongues 9 preferably at the outer side of the adjacent sides 7, 7 of the cover section and securing the' tongues to parts which they respectively lap by staples 13, bottom or body section A and the top or or in any other suitable manner. The cover section B, h are hinged at their tongues 5 at the reai` ends of the sides 1. l adjacent edges to a back or center connectof the body section are folded inwardly ing strip C along the lines c, c. The body against the inner side of the respective ends section A is scored adjacent to its side and of the rear wall or connecting part C of front edges by lines a and a, respectively, the sections to coperate therewith to form each of which is parallel to the adjacent an outwardly opening pocket 14 at each rear edge and a distance therefrom equal to the corner of the box, into which the fiaps or 7 due to the cutting away of the blank, as
adjacent ends of the j tongues 11 of the cover sections are ini tended to be inserted when the cover section is closed down over the bottom section, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The tongues -.are secured to the rear wall C by staples 15, which are disposed adjacent to the top edge of such wall in register with the cutaway portions 12 of the tongues 11, whereby the tongues may be inserted into the pockets 14. over the staples, as indicated. To insert the tongues 11 into the rea-r corner pockets 14 of the box, -it is necessary'to spring the 'rear ends of the cover sides 7 outwardly for such purpose, as indicated in Fig. 3.
It is found in practice that the provision of the tongue-and-socket feature at the rear corners of the box materially strengthens such corners against collapsing stresses, and tends to resist a relative opening of the bottom and cover sections so that it is not necessary ordinarily to wrap a securing string around the box to retain the sections inI closed relation. The insertion of the tongues 11 into the pockets 14 also serves to retain the rear ends of the cover sides in contact with the sides of the bottom section.
In order to render the box collapsible in its folded or set-up state, the sides 1 of the body section are diagonally scored on their inner sides, as at 16, to permit an inward collapsing of the front and rear sides of the bottom section thereover, while the cover section preferably has its front side 8 diagonally scored, as at 17, to permit an outward collapsing of such side and an inward folding of the sides 7, 7 against the'major portion of the cover section, as indicated in Fig; 5. The cover section is then folded over the bottom section along the upper score line c to place the box in compact form for storing or shipping.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangementy or manner Of folding of the parts of the box embodying the invention except in so far as such limitations are specied in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Ijatent, is,-
'1. A box having hingedly connected bottom and cover sections each provided with threel sides and a common fourth side, the bottom section being provided at its rear corners with pockets and the Vcover section being provided at its rear' corners with y tongues adapted to t into said pockets when the sections are in closed relation, substantially as described. Y
2. A box having a common rear wall and bottom and cover sections hingedly connected thereto with the Opposite side walls of the bottom section provided at their rearends with tongues which lap and are secured to the inner side of the common rear'wall of the sections and coperate therewith to form outwardly opening rear corner pockets, and with the sides of the cover section provided at their rear ends with rearwardly projecting tongues adapted to be inserted into said pockets at an angle to the box sides when the box sections are in closed relation.
3. A single-piece paper-board box having hingedly connected bottom and cover sections each provided with a front and opposite side walls and with a common rear l wall, with the bottom section provided at its rear corners with pockets which open out- Wardly in the plane of 'the rear wall and with the rear ends of the cover section side walls provided with tongues adapted to be turned at right angles to .said side walls and to project into the registering corner pockets tions are in closed relation. l
4. A single-piece box blank having bottom and cover sections each provided with scorings adjacent to its outer edges to form adjacent to its outer *corner to provide tongue extensions from the ends of certain of said walls for lapping and securing to the end portions of the other walls when the blank is folded to form a box, a center section hingedly connected to each of the adjacent edges of the bottom and cover sections and adapted to form a common rear wall therefor, the inner or rear ends of the side walls of the respective sections each having a tongue projecting therefrom transversely of said center section and separated therefrom, with the tongues of the cover section of less depth and separated a greater extent from the center section than the tongues of the bottom section, substantially as and or the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. y
