SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,015, dated June 11, 1901.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZAIDA B. VEBB, of Whippany, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes such as are cut from a single piece of material and adapted to be set up without the means of any fastening device except such as is formed on the blank; and one object of my invention is to produce a box of this character which is simple and strong, easy to manipulate, and especially to make a box in which the blank is not weakened by slots, but adapted to fold so as to make a secure fastening, whereby the box is made unusually strong for a folding box.
Another object of my invention is to form a cover portion on the box-blank which is adapted to lock securely and easily to the bottom portion of the box.
To these ends my invention consists of a folding box, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a detail of the box-blank. Fig. 2 is an end View of the partially-set-up box. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box when set up, but with the cover open. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the partially-folded box. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the closed box with the handle attached.
The blank, which can be made of any suitable material, has a rectangular bottom 10 formed between the score-lines 11 and 12, the two former and the two latter being parallel, so as to intersect at the corners of the bottom, and the score-lines form the end pieces 13 and side pieces 14, which, as usual in folding boxes, are adapted to turn up at right angles to the bottom. The side and end pieces are connected by the corner-pieces 15, which are scored from their points which correspond to the corners of the blank to the intersection of the score-lines 11 and 12, so that when the box is set up the corner-pieces will double along the score-lines 16, thus forming double tucks, (see Figs. 2 and 4,) which are adapted to fold inward and lie snug against the box ends or sides, as the case may be. Projecting from the end pieces 13 are locking-flaps 17, which are preferably separated from the end pieces by score-lines 18, and these aps are cut away on the side edges, as shown at 19, thus forming locking-wings 20, and these wings are in turn cut under slightly, as at 21, so that they may more readily and securely engage the tucks or folded corner-pieces 15. When the box is set up, the end and side pieces are turned up, as usual, at right angles to the bottom 10, and the aps 17, which are of the same height as the end pieces 13, are then doubled outward over the folded corner-pieces or tucks 15, and the lockingwings 2O tuck up under the said corner-pieces or tucks. It will thus be seen that the ends and sides of the box are securely fastened and that the fastening is accomplished without the use of the customary engaging slots.
While the box-body can be used without a cover, still this style of box generally has a cover, and when such is desirable the cover or top 22 is made on one edge of the side piece 14a, being preferably separated therefrom by the score-line 23, and the cover or top has, preferably, a terminal tongue 24, which is adapted to tuck down into the box, and, if desired, a similar protective tongue or flap may be produced on the side or end edges of the cover or top; but if the cover or top is to be locked to the bottom it is provided at the ends with locking-flaps 25, the height of which corresponds to the height of the box, and these flaps are cut under on the side edges, similar to the case of the flaps 17, and locking-wings 26 are formed, which wings correspond to the wings 20, heretofore referred to, and like them are adapted when the cover is closed to lock under and engage with the folding cornerpieces or tucks 15. It will be seen that this style of locking attachment for the cover can only be used to advantage when the cornerpieces are permitted to lie on the exterior of the box, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The box can be used either with or without a handle; but if the handle is used a strip 28 serves the purpose, which strip is adapted to IOO have its ends thrust through slots 28n in the looking-flaps 25,and these strips have widened ends 29, which can be folded inward to permit them to be thrust through the slots and then bent outward to prevent the withdrawal of the handle.
It will of course be understood that scorelines need not necessarily' be provided at all the points indicated, as in some places if the material is light it can be folded without such score-lines; but a nicer box is made and is easier manipulated if score-lines are pro duced, as described.
It will be seen that to set up a box it is only necessary to raise to a vertical position the end and side pieces, after which the lockingflaps 17 are folded outward and engaged to the folded corner-pieces or tucks, as already described.
Having th us described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl As an improved article of manufacture, a folding box comprising a bottom piece, end and side pieces projecting from the four sides of the bottom piece, said ends and sides being united by corner-pieces adapted to fold in the middle and lie flat against the box, locking-aps projecting from two opposed edges of the box and adapted to fold over on the outside and engage the corner folds, and the top or cover projecting from a third edge of the box and provided at its ends with locking flaps having laterally extending wings adapted to lie against the box, and also engage the said corner folds and a terminal tongue on the cover adapted to tuck down into the box, therebylocking the cover to the box-body.
