My invention relates to a novel locking corner for a knock down paper container made from a sheet of cut and scored paper or fiber. Among the objects of my invention are the a provision of a folding box made jfrom cut and scored blanks in which there is provided an unusually rigid corner lock. 7 Another object is the provision of a locking tongue adapted to engage a slot in which the tongue will extend in such direction that similarly constructed covers and bodies will telescope one within the other without the tabs tending to be torn off or disaligned.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a box or container in which a triple ply layer of material is provided at the corners and in which the exterior surface of the cover or body is free from any projecting edges which might cause the covers and 90 bodies to catch when they are being put together. 7
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lock corner structure for a paper box which will be extremely simple to set up and in which the locking tongue extends so that it engages a slot on'one of the end flaps which extends in alignment with the top and bottom of the box so that the box structure is not weakened by the structure of the locking flaps. The above and other objects to which reference will be made in the ensuing disclosure, I accomplish by that certain combination and arrangement of parts of which I have shown a preferred embodiment.
Referring to the drawingsi Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank. 7 a
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a locking corner at the start of the folding over operation.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the corner and a further advanced stage of folding them is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a corner after it has been folded.
Referring first to the blank, I have shown a bodyportion 1 with end closure flaps 2, 3. The end closure flaps fold inwardly so that flap 3 lies inwardly in the box with reference to the flap 2 which forms the outer surface container edges of which tendto seat in thescored surface of the flapsQ aIIdjt-he adjacent surface are extendedvby means of inserting-the finger 1930. ofthe doublefolded box edge. The flaps 3 have locking flap sflat each end edge which extend beyond the main body ofthe locking flaps. I have further provided slots 5 in each of the end flaps 4 which serve to retain the locking tongues to" be hereinafter described. The flaps 2 are joined to the body l by means of scored'areas ad and the flaps 3 are articulated to the flaps 2 by meansof o 1 scored areas b-b. The locking flaps flare 50 articulated to the flaps means of scored areas 0-0. The side walls of the container are preferably formed with single thickness fiapslfi which have lock corner reinforcing flaps 7: articulated thereto by means of scored areas 03-03. The flaps 6 are articulated to the main body by means of scored areas see.
\Lockingvtongues 8 having lines ofarticulation ff extending parallel with the side edges of'the containerareprovided so that to when the corners, are folded overin a lock cornerformation, the ,tongues8 will engage a the slots 5. a v v p Referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4, in folding thebox, the side walls 6 are first folded up to form a rightangle with the main body of the container. The lockingflaps 7 are then folded inwardly at alright angle both to the fiap 6 to which they are articulated and to thebody l the angles of course being in different planes. The end walls 2 are next fold ed ata right angle to the body 1 and into surface contact with the locking flaps 7, the lower areas a a.
I The flaps 3 are then folded inwardly so as to lie parallel and in surface contact with the inner surface of theljflapsZ. Also re taining the locking flaps 7 between the inner of the flaps-3. a f 1 a i The flaps are then folded in at an angle to the side and endwalls and the tongues, 8
against the outer surface of the tongues into theslots;5.; vAfter'thetongues 8 are insertedin the slots 5; the flaps 4 are pressed back into contact with the inner surface of the side flaps 6.
After the container has been assembled in the manner which has just been described, the assembly is ready for use either as a box body or as a box cover in the well known manner of such constructions of which there has been considerable development in the manufacture of such containers as are used for clothing boxes; All the advantages such as are provided by this type of box are inherent in my construction with the otheradvantagesvsuch as the three ply thickness of material extending at the corners of the endsjof the boxand the two ply layers at the corners of the sides of the box. The scored areasatth'e base of the locking tongues bear against the edges of the slots whichfa's have been noted extend parallel with the bottom and top of the'container. The locking tongues fit snugly against the inner surfaces of'the flaps 4 so- 2f; thatthere is no tendency when a cover is collapsed within a box body for the tongues or slots to catch and tear off. The outer surfaces of the side wall 6 will be substantially smooth so that it presents a neat appearance, andhas no jutting tongues which tially as described.
are liable to catch in the use of the containe'r. I 7 V I While I have particularly described my inventi'onwithfreferenceto the side and end if) walls in the blanks and containers illustrated,
' it will be obvious that a similar lock corner may be provided were the dimensions of the box to be changed and the single thickness of material extend along the ends instead of along the sides of the box. Such mechan= ical modification would obviously be within the scope of my invention which as has been noted particularly relates to the locking f'ea ture of my corner construction.
40 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V In a knocked down paper box of the class wherein a fiat body has upstanding opposite side and end walls, the end walls being provided with inwardly folding flapsa'nd each side wall having reinforcing flaps at its ends and wherein each folding flap has short locking' flaps at its ends characterized by the fact that each of said locking flaps is provided with an elongated slot, each of said side Walls provided with a pair of locking tongues receivable Within said slots when said box is 1 set up, the said tonguesbeing further characterized by the fact that they are articulated parallel with the outer edge of said side walls so that when they are folded in a direction towards said flat body they are prevented from being torn olf or disaligned substan- EARL S.
