Description

H. A. BERGER April 5, 1938.
CONTAINER Filed March 31, 1937 45 INVENTOR 66489) A) 51!?659 C la, O M/22A) I ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 5, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 Claim.
This invention relates to display containers. It is particularly directed to a container made by folding a cardboard blank and having window openings covered by a transparent sheet.
An object of this invention is to provide a display container of the character described made of a one piece die cut blank which may be so folded as to produce a curved portion with cut outs, the container including'a transparent sheet within l the container held in curved condition against said cut outs to produce curved transparent windows for the container, and eliminating necessity for creasing the transparent sheet.
A further object of this invention is to provide 5 a container of the character described in which a transparent sheet, such as a heavy sheet of celluloid is held in curved condition in the container without pasting.
Another object of this invention is to provide 3 a strong, ruggedcontainer of the character described which may be shipped and stored flat, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, easy to set up, wherein the contents are fully exposed to view, in which articles may easily be taken 5 out or inserted without disassembling the container, and which shall yet be practical and emcient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is' shown one of the various possible illustrative'embodiments of this invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container emlO bodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cardboard blank i5 used to make my improved container.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, l8
designates a container embodying theinvention and composed of a blank I of cardboard, paperboard or the like material, and an oblong sheet I2 30 of celluloid or the like transparent flexible sheet material.
The container l8 when assembledhas ends l3,
a rear or bottom l4, and a curved front or top l5 having windows l8 covered by the celluloid sheet 55 I2 held within the container in curved condition to provide curved transparent windows for. the container whereby the contents of said container may be fully viewed and the transparent sheet has no creased corners.
The blank II has a central rectangular section 5 28 bounded by a pair of parallel crease lines 2|, 22 and a second pair of parallel crease lines 23, 24 The section 28 is formed with two pairs of aligned, inwardly facing crescent shaped openings or cut away portions 21, 28, one pair being symmetrically disposed with respect to the other pair about the middle of section 28. The ends of each pair of cut outs 21, 28 are connected by, parallel scored or creased lines 38, 3|. The two portions 82 of section 28 between cut away portions 21, 28 are each formed with a pair of parallel scored or creased lines 84, 85 forming a relatively wide central section 38 and narrower side panels 31.
Extending from one side section 28 of the blankis a section 48 having a central slit 4|, and a pair of inclined slits 42 on opposite sides of said central slit. The section 48 may be folded about crease line 2| and has the width of sections 36.
Extending from the opposite side of said section 28 is a section 45 having a central tab 46 adapted to be received in the central slit 4| 01 section 48, and a pair of inclined tabs 48 adapted to be locked within inclined slits 42 of said section 48. Tabs 48, 48 are adapted to fold or bend about crease lines 48 and-58 respectively to facilitate engagement of said tabs in said slits 4|, 42. Said section 45 is foldable about crease line 22. Extending from each end of section 28 and foldable about crease lines 23, 24, is a central flap 58, and a pair of side flaps 5|. 58 is of the same width as sections 38 and has a tab 52 foldable about crease line 53 parallel to crease line 24. Triangular cut outs 55 may be formed between tabs 58 and 5| adjacent crease lines 23, 24.
The transparent sheet I2 is preferably a heavy sheet of celluloid, although other transparent materials may be employed. Said sheet I2 .is substantially the same size as section 28 of the blank The manner of folding the blank to form the container will now be described. The section 28 forms the front curved wall l5 of the container and is bent into curved shape by overlapping the sections 48, 45 and engaging the tabs 46, 48 within slits 4|, 42. Sections 48,45 form the bottom or rear M of the container. The sections 38 are alsopushed back into contact with the inner surface of section 48 to fold back sections 31 and bring the same into contact with the inner surface of curved wall l5. This manipula- The central flap 35 tion brings the crease lines 34, 35 adJacent crease lines 22, 2| respectively. Pushing sections 35 back also forms the windows it.
The flaps 5| at one end are then folded into superposed relation, and the central flap 50 is folded over the flaps 5| and the tab 52 inserted into the box, against the inner surface of section 40.
The-sheet i2 is next inserted endwise within the container between sections 36 and the front or top curved wall 15, with the side edges l2a at the crease lines 34, 35 and 22, M. The sheet I2 being curved covers the w'indows'ii, thus pro ducing a curved transparent window. Said sheet I I2 is not pasted in the container and yet maintains its position and is easily inserted into place.
After sheet I! is in place the flaps 5| at the opposite end of the container, are folded into superimposed relation, and flap 5!! is folded thereover and tab 52 inserted into .thecontainer to close the same.
crease lines 23, 24 and crease lines 55 to the shape of the box ends. than width of flaps 50. I v v The container or box Hi can be made in any suitable size, dimensions, color or shape of front panel cut outs, it being a' dominant feature of the invention to produce a curved top which permits the celluloid sheet'to be used without creasing the same,- and to employ a celluloid sheet whichwill stand up rigidly without pasting. A
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

5. A container comprising a transversely curved wall, a pair of sections extending from opposite 30 sides of said curved wall and being superimposed, cooperating interlocking'means on said pair of sections, foldable means at the ends of said wall forming the ends of said container, said wall having a pair of opposed cuts, and the portion 3:,
between said cuts being pushed back into contact with the interlocked sections, and a sheet of flexible transparent material within said container and in engagement with the inner surface of said curved wall, and between said curved wall 4n and said pushed back portion.
'6. A container comprising a member made of a single blank of flexible sheet material and a sheet of flexible transparent material, said first member having a wall of transversely curved 45 cross-section formed with a window opening,.portions extending from the sides of said curved wall and forming a bottom wall for said container, and portions extending from the ends of said curved wall and forming the ends of said 5-.
