1 Claim.

My invention relates to improvements in receptacles and it is directed more particularly to improvements in an open-sided receptacle having parts arranged to permit transformation of said open-sided receptacle to a closed container.

The principal object of the invention is directed towards the provision of an open-sided receptacle having opposite end portions which are relatively foldable or hinged so that they may be moved so as to form a closed container. As a special feature thereof the receptacle may be left in its open position and a cover may be disposed thereover to form a larger closed container.

As a special feature of the invention, a means is provided to reinforce the hinged parts of the device so as to make the same more secure and firm.

According to further unique and novel features of the invention, the device is of simple construction so that it is not costly in its manufacture.

Various other novel features and advantages of my invention will be hereinafter more fully referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle and cover therefor, each embodying the novel features of the invention;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the receptacle of the invention in its folded or closed-containerforming position; and

Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the device of the invention taken on a line parallel to the end portion.

Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be more fully described. Like characters refer to like parts in different figures of the invention.

The receptacle of the invention is generally designated by ID and it has a horizontal bottom wall ll provided with a pair of transverse scoring lines I2 intermediate its ends forming a hinge portion I3. These scored lines l2 separate the two end portions from the hinged portion I3. Front, rear and side walls 14 extend upwardly from marginal edges of said wall H, all being preferably of the same height substantially as shown.

The container may be made of various materials although a cardboard material is preferred and it may be made from a single blank of suitable sheet material.

be provided. These lines l5 are for tearing purposes as will presently be seen and when the walls are torn along these lines, a tab portion l6 between the two lines is provided.

When it is desired to use the device as a cover member or as a bottom member of a completed box, the same may be easily accomplished by allowing the member to remain intact and by not tearing along the perforated lines or by not folding along the scored lines. In such an instance, a second receptacle, such as indicated by H! in Fig. 1 is used which is adapted to overlie the first receptacle It! in the conventional manner.

When it is desired to use the device as a complete container within itself, the same may be accomplished in the following manner. The perforated lines IS on the side walls 14 are torn so as to divide the side walls into three separate portions. The device is then easily folded along the scored lines 12 whereupon the two end bottom portions are brought into parallel relation with each other substantialy as shown in Fig. 2. The portions of the side walls are herein fitted one inside the other and the tab portion l6 of the side wall is fitted adjacent the parallel side wall portions to serve as a reinforcing means therefor.

While I have described the invention in great detail and with respect to the present preferred form thereof, it is not desired to be limited thereto since changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and.

scope of the invention. The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.

What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A receptacle of the class described consisting material folded so as to normally have a horizontal bottom wall and vertical side and end walls hinged thereto, said bottom wall being provided with a pair of spaced and substantially parallel bending lines which extend transversely thereof intermediate its opposite ends, one of said bending lines be-' ing nearer to the end wall adjacent thereto than is the other bending line to the end wall adjacent thereto, each of said side .walls being provided with a pair of spaced perforated tearing lines which extend vertically upwardly throughout the height of each side wall and having their lower ends in substantial coincidence with said bending lines whereby said side walls may be torn along the tearing lines to provide oppositelydisposed flap portions which are foldable inwardly towards one another along the hinges between said side walls and bottom Wall so that said bottom wall may be folded on both of the bending lines and the portions thereof at the outer sides of the bending lines may be brought into spaced parallelism with one another at a distance equal to the distance between the bending lines and the portions of said side walls at the outside ofthe tearing lines which coincide with said other bending line may be brought into adjacency with the outsides of the portions of said side walls at the outside of the tearing lines which coincide with said one bending line with the end walls in overlapping relation.
