Nov. 29, 1938.l l.. BRQNSTEIN Box AND HANDLE Filed March 11, 1938 mv NToR Patented Nov. 29, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT Fries York Folding Box Co. poration of New J erse Application March 11,
9 Claims.
This inventionrelates particularly to a handle for cardboard boxes, although the invention is susceptible to use with other receptacles or containers.
One object of the invention is to provide a handle which shall embody novel and improved features of construction whereby the handle shall be strong and durable, and simple and inexpensive in construction.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved combination of a box and a handle of the type that includes a handle loop projecting through a slot in one wall of the box, wherein the handle shall be so constructed and related to the box as to reenforce the wall of the box at the zone adjacent the handle and reduce to the minimum the possibility of accidentaltearing of the handle from the wall of the box.
Other objects, advantages and results of the invention will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box and handle embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 1 with portions of the box broken away.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse vertical sectional view on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detached perspective view of the handle, and
Figure 6 is a plan View of the blank from which the handle is formed.
Specifically describing the invention, I have shown it in conjunction with a known type of box A which has a wall I disposed between and in approximately perpendicular relation to two other walls 2 and 3. As shown, the wall I constitutes an edge or side of the box, while the walls 2 and 3 constitute the bottom and top of the box. The structure of the box is immaterial to the invention, but I have shown a known type of box in which the wall I serves as a common side of a top section and bottom section, and the bottom wall 2 and top wall 3 are hingedly connected at 4 to the wall I. The bottom section also includes a side wall 5 and end walls 6, while the top section similarly includes a side wall 'I and an end wall 8. To close the box the top and bottom sections are arranged with the sides 5 and 6 of the bottom section in telescoping relation to the sides 'I and ends 8 of the top section, as clearly shown in Figure 3.
, Jersey City, N. J., a oory 1938, Serial No. 195,217
In accordance with the invention, the wall I has a longitudinal slot 9 through which the handle projects. The handle includes a handle loop IEBl and a base I I extending at opposite sides of the handle loop approximately perpendicularly to the general plane of the loop. As shown, the base II constitutes flanges i2, one at each side of the handle loop, and each flange has a tongue I3 in overlapping relation to the tongue of the other flange, at least one of said tongues extending through the handle loop.
The base is of a width approximately corresponding to the distance between the top and bottom walls 2 and 3 of the box, and in attaching the handle to the box, the box is opened, the handle loop i@ is slipped through the slot il from the inside of the box, and the base 'I of the handle is brought into underlying relation to the wall I so as to extend at opposite sides of the slot 9, as clearly shown in Figures 3 and The tongues i 3 extend transversely of the slot and underlie the wall I.
The base II is also provided with edge flaps I4 which lie atwise against the insides of the top and bottom walls 2 and 3 of the box.
With this construction, the handle is rmly attached to the box, and the base II, tongues I3 and aps I4 reenforce the Walls of the box in the zone of the slot 9 so as to reduce to the minimum the possibility of the handle being torn from the wall of the box as by being pulled through the slot 9 or by tearing of the wall of the box I adjacent the slot.
Preferably the handle is formed of one piece of sheet material such as cardboard, as shown in Figures 5 and 6. The sheet has a central longitudinal scoring I E and other longitudinal scorings I6 equidistantly spaced at opposite sides of the scoring i5, whereby the sheet may be folded along the scoring I5 and I6 to provide a gripping portion or loop Ill formed of two thicknesses of material, and the base flanges I2. Each line of scoring I6 is interrupted intermediate its ends and merges into the ends of a slit I 'I so that when the sheet is folded along the scored lines I5 and i5, the portions bounded by the slits I'I form the tongues I3 and provide in each thickness of the gripping portion IIB an opening I3 in register with the opening in the other thickness to complete the handle loop. The slits Il may be angular or curved depending upon the shape of the opening desired in the handle loop.
The flaps I4 are formed by bending the sheet along the longitudinally extending scored lines I9 which are spaced equidistantly from opposite longitudinal edges of the sheet.
While I have shown and described the invention as embodied in certain details of construction, it will be understood that this is primarily for illustrating the principles of the invention, and that the shape and details of structure of the handle and the box may be modied and changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. The combination with a box having a slot in one wall thereof, of a handle including a loop fitted in and projecting through said slot, and a base extending at each side of the loop and underlying said wall of the box at opposite sides of said slot, said base extending transversely through said loop and across said slot.
2. The combination with a box having one wall disposed between and perpendicular to two adjacent walls, and a slot in the first-mentioned wall, of a handle including a loop fitted in and extending through said slot and a base lextending at each side of said loop and underlying said first-mentioned wall at opposite sides of said slot, said base being of a width corresponding to the distance between the other said walls and having edge flaps each lying flatwise against one of said other walls.
3. The combination with a box having a slot in one wall thereof, of a handle including a loop fitted in and projecting through said slot, and a flange at each side and at the base of said loop and underlying said wall at one side of said slot, each flange having a tongue extending across said slot, at least one of said tongues extending through said loop.
4. A handle of the character described formed of sheet material and including a handle loop and a flange at each side and at the base of said loop and disposed approximately perpendicularly to the plane of said loop, each flange having a tongue and at least one of which extends transversely through said loop.
5. A handle of the character described formed of sheet material and including a handle loop and a flange at each side and at the base of said loop and disposed approximately perpendicularly to the-plane of said loop, each flange having a tongue in overlapping relation to the other flange and at least one tongue extending transversely through the loop.
6. A handle of the character described comprising a sheet of material folded upon itself centrally longitudinally to form a gripping portion formed of two thicknesses, and folded at the base at each side of the loop to form a flange projecting perpendicularly to the plane of the gripping portion, each thickness of said gripping portion having a tongue stamped therefrom to form an opening therein in register with the opening in the other thickness to provide a handle loop, each tongue being disposed in overlapping relation to the other flange and at least one tongue extending through said loop.
'7. The handle set forth in claim 6 with the addition of a flap at the edge and perpendicular to the plane of each said flange.
8. The handle set forth in claim 5 with the addition of a flap at the edge and perpendicular to the plane of each said flange.
9. A handle blank comprising a sheet of man terial having central longitudinal scoring and other longitudinal scoring equidistantly spaced from said central scoring at each side thereof, each second-mentioned scoring being interrupted intermediate its ends and merging into a slit, whereby upon folding said sheet along said scoring a gripping portion is formed with a flange extending perpendicularly to the plane of said gripping portion at each side thereof, and the portions of said sheet bounded by said slits form tongues that are displaced by said folding to provide openings in said gripping portion and make a handle loop.
