3 Claims.
This invention relates to cartons and particularly paper cartons such as are commonly used as egg boxes and bakery boxes.
One object of the invention is the provision of 5 supports for the carton which maintain the bottom of the carton in raised position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a. carton having a reenforced wall construction and a method of making the same. I In the practice of the invention a blank of common construction is employed and is of such size and shape as required for the carton to be produced. Such a blank is provided with longitudinal and transverse crease lines which define those portions which are to form the bottom, the walls and the flaps for securing adjacent walls together. U-shaped portions extending toward parallel adjacent crease lines are formed by cuts in that portion which is to form the bottom of the carton. Diagonal crease lines are provided which define with other crease lines and the edges of the blank those portions which cooperate with other portions to secure the adjacent walls of the carton together. Preferably, the outer portions of the blank are folded inwardly along the longitudinal crease lines upon the inner portions of the blank. The blank is then' folded along the transverse crease lines. Opening of the folded blank to form the carton causes the blank to become folded 40 .trating different steps in the folding of the blank;

Before explaining in detail the present invention it is tobe understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in 65' the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation, and it is not in- 5 tended to limit the invention claimed herein beyond the requirements of the prior art.
In the form of the invention illustrated the carton is made from a blank B of rectangular shape and is provided with longitudinal crease lines I0 10 and II spaced apart and from longitudinal edges of the blank. The blank is also provided with transverse crease lines l2, l3, l4 and I5. Preferably, the portions of the creaselines l2, l4 and I5 extending from the longitudinal crease lines l5 l0 and H to the adjacent longitudinal edges of the blank may be cut as illustrated at a. The crease lines I3 must of necessity be cut from the crease lines In and II to the adjacent longitudi nal edges of the blank as illustrated at b. 20
The longitudinal crease lines In and II and the transverse crease lines [2, l3, l4 and I5 define certain areas of the blank which are subsequently to form the bottom 20 of the body of the carton, its rear Wall 2|, front wall 22 and side walls 28 5 and 24 together with the flaps 25 at opposite ends. of the rear wall 2! and the flaps 26 at the opposite ends of the front wall 22 which cooperate with portions of the side walls 23 and 24 to secure the same to the front and rear walls. In the form illustrated, the crease lines also define a top or cover 28 having a front wall 29 and side walls 30 and 3|. The flaps 32- at opposite ends of the front wall 29 cooperate with the side walls 30 and 3| to secure the front wall thereto. 35
The blank from which the carton of the in- .vention is produced is also provided with diagonal crease lines 35 and 36 extending from the point of intersection of the crease lines Ill and II with the crease line [4 to the outer edges of the blank. Diagonal crease lines 31 and 38 are also provided extending from the intersection of thecrease lines [0 and II with the crease line l5 to the outer edges of the blank. Diagonal crease'lines 39 and 40 are provided extending from the intersection of the lines Ill and II with the line l2 to the outer edges of the blank. The portion 20 which is subsequently to form the bottom is provided with'a series of spaced U-shaped portions 44 and 45 formed by cuts 42 and 43 extending respectively to the crease lines l4 and I5.
The portions of the blank'adjacent the longitudinal edges are first folded inwardly along the longitudinal crease lines l0 and H upon the inner portions as shown in Fig. 2. Adhesive is applied, as indicated at t, to the triangular portions of the blank which are defined by the diagonal crease lines 35, 36, 31, 38, 39 .and and the other crease lines and the other edges of the blank which they intersect. The portion 29 of the blank together with the flaps 32 which have been folded thereon is now folded along the crease line l2 to bring the flaps 32 in engagement with the adhesive coated triangular portions t of the portions 30 and 3|. The portion 22 together with the flaps 26 folded thereon is folded along the crease line I5 to bring the flaps 26 in engagement with the adhesive coated triangular portions t adjacent thereto on the portions 23 and 24 as indicated in Fig. 3. The
blank is now folded along the crease line H to bring the flaps 25 in engagement with the triangular adhesive coated portions t of the portions 23 and 24 adjacent thereto, as indicated in Fig. 4.
It will be noted that each operation in folding the blank takes place while the blank is in a fiat position. It will be understood, of course, that separate preformed and creased blanks can be fed into a suitable machine and folded as described or a suitable machine may be provided into which strips of carton-forming material, such as cardboard, is fed and is subsequently creased and cut into blanks as it passes through the machine and these blanks are subsequently folded as described.
When the blank folded as described is opened, the triangular adhesive coated portions t are folded along the diagonal crease lines 35, 36, 31, 38, 39, 40, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6.
It will be understood that cartons may be produced in accordance with the invention in which the cover is merely provided with a front wall. In such cases, the portions 30, 3| and 32 of the blank would be eliminated.
I claim:
1. The method of making a carton in collapsed condition adapted to be set up for use comprising forming a blank having longitudinal and transverse crease lines, said blank being cut along certain of said crease lines from the edge of the blank to the point of intersection with another crease line, forming diagonal crease lines extending from said points of intersection to the nearest edge of the blank, and folding said-blank inward along said longitudinal and transverse crease lines and securing together triangular portions of the outer surface of the blank each of which is bounded by one of said diagonal crease lines whereby the blank is folded along said diagonal crease lines when the carton is set up.
2. The method of making a carton in collapsed condition adapted to be set up for use comprising forming a blank providing integral bottom and cover portions, forming longitudinal and transverse crease lines in said bottom portion, cutting the blank along certain of said crease lines from the edge of the blank to the point of intersection with another crease line,
forming diagonal crease lines extending from said points of intersection to the nearest edge of the blank, and folding said blank inward along said longitudinal and transverse crease lines and securing together triangular portions of the outer surface of the blankeach of which is bounded by one of said diagonal crease lines whereby the blank is folded along, said diagonal crease lines when the carton is set up.
3. The method of making a carton in collapsed condition adapted to be set up for use comprising forming a blank providing integral bottom and cover portions, forming longitudinal and transverse crease lines in both of said porti ons, cutting the blank along certain of said crease lines from the edge of the blank to the point of intersection with another crease line, forming diagonal crease lines extending from said points of intersection to the nearest edge of the blank, and folding said blank inward along said longitudinal and transverse crease lines and securing together triangular portions of the outer surface of the blank each of which is bounded by one of said diagonal crease lines whereby the blank is folded along said diagonal crease lines when the carton is set up.
