Description

Jam 233 J. SCHINDLER. CONTAINER FILED OCT.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 23, 1923.
ANTHONY J. SCI-IINDLER, or BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
CONTAINER.
iApplication filed t0bC1'l9, 1920. Serial No. 417,954.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANTHONY J. SomNn- L'ER, citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented new and use- :l'ul Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spouts for pasteboard and like boxes and cartons, and one of the principal objects is to provide a device of this nature which may be stamped at the same time and. from the same sheet thatt-hebox blank is stamped From;
iinother object is to provide a device of this nature which shall be simple in struc-, ture, cheap oi? manufacture, and etticient tor the purposeior which it isdesigned.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel construction which is hereinafter i'ully described and claimed and which is shown in the accompanying drawing comprising one sheet, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of? the end. ota carton blank embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating another embodiment ottmy invention.
Figure 3 is a perspectiveview of the form shown in Figure 1 with the spout open.
Figure 4. is a similar View oi. the embodiment shownin Figure 2.
This invention contemplates providing a paste board or like carton for use as a container for cereals and like material with perforated and creased portions which normally form shutters and which may be folded outwardly to form a spout for directing the discharge of the material andmay then be folded back to their normal position to seal the package against dust and dirt.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the end portion of a carton which is cut down on lines 2, 3 and 4 so as to form trout and rear flaps 5 and (i, and
{right and left side flaps 7 and S.
In the .iorm shown in F igures 1 and 3, the rear flap 6 is provided with an aperture 9, and the trout flap 5 is peritorated on lines '10, 1'1 and 12 and creased on lines 13 and 14:
so as to form two shutters and 16. The right-hand side flap T is left intact. and the left-hand side flap 8 is cut on lines 1? and 1S and creased on lines 19 and to form shutters 21 and 22.
When the carton is sealed, theside flaps '7 and 8 are first folded over, then the back flap 6 is folded over and glued to flaps 7 and 8 with aperture 9 registering withshutters 21 and 22, and finally the front flap. 5 is folded over and glued to flap 6 withthe shutters 15 and 16 in registerwith aperture 9. This aperture 9 is somewhat larger than the space defined by the shutters so as to prevent the gluing down of the shutters. To,
open the'carton, a pen knife is run along lines 10, 11 and 12 and shutters 15 and 16.
are folded back on hinge lines 13 and 14. Shutters 21 and 22 are then folded out on hinge lines 19-and 20 so that a spout is formed by shutters 15, 16, 21 and 22 as shown in Figure 3, members 15 and 16pressmg against 21 and 22 to hold the spout tight 111 formation.
In the modified form shown'in Figures 2 and 4t, an, aperture 23 is formed in the free edge of the bac; flap 6, and the front flap 5 is perforated on lines 24, 25 and.26 and creased on lines 27 and 28 toform shutters 29 and 30, the crease 28 being co-incident with the hinge crease of flap 5. Side flap 7 is cut on line 31. and creased on line 32 to form a shutter 33; and flap 8 is cut on line PA- and. creased on line 55 to form a shutter 36.
Tn sealing this form of package, flaps are folded over and glued as in the form first described, and in opening, the lines 2 1, 25 and 26 are cut with a knife and the flaps 29, 30, 33 and 36 are folded out to form the spout as shown in Figure 4.
It is obviousthat the shutters may be located in various portions of the flaps as desired, and that otherparts may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention. 1, therefore, do not limit myself to the exact details of construction set "forth herein, nor to anything less 1 than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
lVhat I elann as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the ' vided with a plurality of shutters disposed to open in respective directions for forming a tubular spout to direct the dispensing of the contentsfof said carton.
'5. A carton comprising flaps each provided with a plurality of shutters disposed to open in respective directions for forming a spout to direct the dispensing of the contents of said carton, and also comprising a flap adapted to be interposed between the 'first said flaps and formed with an aperture to register with said shutters.
6. A carton having one of its walls formed with intersecting lines of perforations and creased so as to define a shutter movable to a position to form'part of a tubular spout for aiding in the dispensing of the contents of said carton.
7. A carton having one of its walls provided with a plurality of lines of perforations and creases so as to define a plurality of shutters which may be moved to positions to aid in the dispensing of the contents of said carton and operable to hold one another in such position when moved thereto.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
ANTHONY J. SCI-IINDLER.
