W. K. CLARK CARTON Filed May '27, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR ATTORNEY slits 18 in the flaps 6 and Patented Apr. 6, 1937 PATENT OFFlCE CARTON- William Kenneth Clark, Chicago, 111., assignor to Industrial Patents Corporation,

Chicago, 111.,

a corporation of Delaware Application May 2'1, 1935, Serial No. 23,543

3 Claims.

This invention relates to improvements in boxes or cartons formed from a single blank of cardboard or other suitable material in which flaps, integral with the bottom and side walls thereof. and adapted to be interfolded and interlocked, are provided to form the end walls.

One of the objects of this invention resides in the novel shape and position of the end flaps extending from the bottom and side walls which permits a substantial saving of material in cuttingthe blanks from a continuous sheet.

Another object of this invention resides in the novel features of the end flaps forming a part of the box or carton blank which permits the box or carton to be quickly assembled and securely held in shape.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims which follow.

Figure l l of the drawings is a plan view of blanks from which the carton of the present invention may be formed and illustrates the relation of the end flaps of adjacent blanks as they are cut from a continuous sheet of material.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of a carton formed from one of the blanks shown in Figure 1.

The carton illustrated in Figure l is formed from a single blank of cardboard or other suitable material scored and cut as shown in Figure 1, and comprises a bottom 1, side walls 2 and 3, top 6, and ends 5, said ends being formed from a plurality of interfolding and interlocking flaps integral with said bottom and side walls, comprising flaps 8 and 9 extending frombottom 1, flaps 5 and 1 extending from side wall 2, and flaps 10 and 11 extending from side wall 3. Flaps 12 and 13, adapted to -be folded inwardly at the top, are integral with and extend from the upper lateral edges of end flaps l0 and 11, respectively. Top 4 is provided with tongue 14 having rounded outer corners 15, which tongue extends the full leigth of and is integral with top 4 at its outer e ge;

In theformation of the box, flaps 8 and 9 are folded at right-angles .to bottom I. Flaps 8 and 9 are shorter than the adjacent end flaps and if desired, may be slightly converged at their lateral edges 15 to facilitate folding of the adjacent end flaps.- I

Flaps l0 and H are cut away to provide tongue portions 11 adapted to fit and interlock within 1 to secure the ends 5. Tongues 11 are formed by cutting a downwardly extending angular slot 19 at the upper outer edge of flaps l0 and It, having a narrowed throat 20, and by cutting said flaps from their outer edge! mencing slightly obliquely at their outer lateral edge. Top

on a curved line indicated by numeral 21, which line, it will be noted, swings downwardly and then upwardly and terminates on a line substantially horizontal with throat 20. Flaps 1t and 11 are cut away as indicated by line 22, said line combelow the terminus of line 21 and extending obliquely to the lower corner adjacent side wall 3.

Designations of position such as the terms upper and lower as used in this specification will be understood to denote portions of the respective parts as they appear in the formed carton shown in Figure 2 or on the blanks shown in Figure 1 and will be clear from the context.

Slits 18 are preferably constructed by cutting wall 2 and extending downwardly and outwardly a distance sufficlent to accommodate the insertion of tongue 1'1. To facilitate the insertion of tongue 1'1, out 23 continues on a sharp turn outwardly andbackwardly on line 24 for a short distance parallel to line 23, whence it continues outwardly and upwardly in a broad are 25, terminating on a line substantially horizontal to its commencement.

The saving of material to which reference has been made is accomplished by the novel shape and position of the parts, the flaps of adjacent blanks being cut from a continuous sheet in interfltting relationship as shown in Figure 1. End flaps B and 9 are of shorter extension than their adjacent flaps and flaps 10 and 11 are cut lower outer corners. Flaps B and l are cut obliquely at their lower outer corners as indicated by line 26, commencing at the approximate center of the outer edge and extending inwardly and downwardly to the lower lateral edge in line with the outer edge of end flaps 8 and 9. Top flaps l2 and 13 are out obliquely at their upper outer corners as indicated by line 21 commencing at the approximate center of the outer edge thereof and continuing downwardly and outwardly to the approximate center of the flaps sired, may be cut away at their upper inner corners as indicated by line 28 equal to line 21 to add symmetry and attractiveness thereto.

It will. be seen by reference by reversing the blanks at their lateral edges, the several flaps of one blank will interfit with the flaps of the adjacent blank, and that as the same are cut from a continuous sheet, a strip of material, as indicated between lines A and B, will be loved for each two blank: cut.

12 and 13, if de-- to Figure 1 that The proposed carton is assembled by folding end flaps 8 and 9 and side walls 2 and '3 upwardly at right-angle to bottom I. Flaps 6 and 1 are folded inwardly against flaps 8 and 9, respectively. Flaps l0 and H are folded inwardly against flaps 6 and 1, portions I! of the l I being inserted through out 23 of slit l8, by which throat 20 will become hooked at cut 23 and secure the ends Flaps l2 and I3 are then folded inwardly and top 4 is folded over on flaps not they wax or other grease-proof or moisture-proof composition.

I claim:

respectively, the tongue from a, continuous flaps-the portions cut away by obliquely cutting the top flap and the slitted end flap and the shortened bottom flap permitting the flaps of adjacent blanks to be cut from a continuous sheet in interfitting relationship.

2. A carton blank comprising bottom and side adjacent flaps, the flap and the shortened extension of said bottom flap permitting flaps of adjacent blanks to be cut sheet in interfitting relationship.

3. A carton blank comprising bottom and side walls, each provided with a flap extending therefrom, the flap extending from one side wall being cut away, to form a. tongue portion on the outer edge thereof, said last-mentioned flap being pro- V flap extending from its upper flap extending from the bottom permitting'fiaps of adjacent blanks to be cut from a continuous sheet in interfltting relationship.
