Chicago, Ill... assignmto Arnold Brothers, 1110., Chicago, m, a corporation of lllllnois a Application June it. rose, Serial at. mass 2 Claims. (c1. see-sci The invention relates to improvements in boxes especially adapted to be made or" paper or similar material, and has for its primary object the provision or an improved construction of this char-- acter by means of which a box of peculiar form and shape is produced.
Another object oi the invention is the provision of a box the character indicated having a top which may be arranged in either flat or w gabled form. I
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Theinvention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying the invention; p
29 Fig. 2 a similar view showing the other side of the box;
. Fig. 3 a bottom plan view or the box;
Fig. 4 an enlarged detailed section taken substantially on line 4-401 Fig. 1; I
s Fig. 5 a plan view 01 the blank from which the box is made; and
Fig. 6 a perspective view 01' one end of the box shown as folded and arranged to provide a box having a flat top The embodiment oi' the invention illustrated in the drawings comprises a blank 0! paper,
cardboard or the like, shaped as shown in Fig.
5, and containing opposite (rant and rear walls 11 and cooperating end walls 12. The rear wall 11 is provided with a securing flap 13 which is secured in the usual way by means 01' staples 14 to the front wall 12 to form a tubular folding box in the usual and well-known way.
The front, rear and end walls are provided with bottom flaps 15 and 16 which are folded and secured together as indicated in Fig. 3 to constitute the normal closed bottom of such a box. The details of the box already described are'old and well-known for the purpose and constitute no.
part of the present invention except insofar as the same cooperate with the parts to be presently described.
The front wall 10 is provided with a cover mp 17 having a. i'oldable locking mp 18 at its free edges, the side edges of the flap 18 being formed into rounded tongues 19 adapted and arranged to engage slits 20 in the opposite cover flap 21 at the top edge of the rear wall 11, as indicated in Fig. 6, whereby a box will be provided with a not top- The cover member 21 is also provided at its free edge with a toldable locking flap 22. having the locking tongues 23 at its free edge adapted and arranged to engage and interlock with the slits 24 in the cover flap 1'l,- as best shown to secure the cover members 17 and 21 in gabled iorm, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and i.
Each of the end walls'l2 is provided at its top with a ioldable triangular combined and and cover member 25 having a locking flap 26 along each free edge. By this arrangement, when the cover members 1'? and 21 are arranged in gabled form, the members 25 are correspondingly arranged with the fiaps26 interlocking as shown in Fig. 2 with the tongues 19 and the slits 20, thereby holding the members 25 in upright position as indicated. When the cover members are folded flat, as indicated in Fig. 6, the triangular members 25 are also folded inwardly and flat within said cover members, as is usual in the ordinary fiat top box.
By this arrangement a simple and efiectlve box is provided which may be closedby a cover arranged in either gabled form, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, or in flat form, as-indlcated in Fig. 6. This will permit the use of the box for various purposes and for enclosing articles of various shapes, forms and sizes.
While I have illustrated and described the pre ferred form of construction for carrying my in-' vention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the of said cover flaps to engage the tongues on the other for securing said flaps in either flat or gabled Iorm; triangular end flaps at the tops of the other opposite walls arranged to be either folded inwardly or to stand upright; and locking flaps at the free edges oi! said trian ular flaps arranged to engage with the locking flap on one or said cover members to hold said triangular flaps upright. 2. A box comprising bottom and side walls; rectangular cover member flaps at the tops of opposite-walls. each or said cover member flaps being provided at its free end with a locking flap provided with tongues, there being slits in each or said cover flaps to engage the tongues on the other ior securing said napsin either not or gabled term; and triangular flaps at the tops of 118 the other opposite walls arranged to be either folded inwardly or to stand upright and inter-fit with said rectangular flaps when in cabled form.
