w. J. MITCHELL DI SPLAY BOX Filed Aug. 4, 1926 iZ-ide/l Patented July 24, 1928.
,UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
DISPLAY BOX.
Application filed August 4, 1926. Serial No. 127,066.
This invention relates to display boxes, and the primary object of the same is to provide a novel form of box of the class specified of a knockdown'type to adapt the same to be transported in bulk in a convenient manner and having features the are easily operated to set up the box in operative form for containing packages, bottles and other articles and placement on a suitable support for displaying the contents thereof.
A further'object of the invention is to provide a display box having easily operated and reliable locking means for holding the parts of the box'in assembled relation to produce a container for various articles, the locking'mea' ns being so disposed and supplemented by auxiliary locking devices as to prevent accidental separation of the parts of'the box when united to receive the articles to be displayed.
lVith the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the preferred construction and arrange fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a perspective view, of a display box embodying the features of the invention and showing theparts assembled and se cured or locked to provide a container for the articles to be displayed;
Fig/2 is a plan perspective of the box, showing the parts thereof fully open and also illustrating the contour of the blank from which the box is'formed.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the display box, looking towards the rear thereof and particularly showing the locking means including an auxiliary or supplemental locking device of single form. 1
Fig. 4 i a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the auxiliary or supplemental locking means in double form.
Fig. 5 is a plan perspective view of a portion of the modified form of the box shown by Fig. 4 in open condition.
The improved display box comprises a front side 5 having ends 6 with integral flaps 7, from which centrally project l,ocking tongues 8. The ends 6 are bent on fold.- ing lines 6 and the flaps 7 are also bent on folding lines 7 The lower edges) 11 of the ends 6 and flaps 7 are coincident and also in alinement with a lower folding line front side 5.
or crease 12 at the lower limit of the front side 5 and on which a bottom 9 is bent,
said bottom being continuous with a back 10 wall of the opening and the said folding or crease line 12. The upper widened member 15 of the front side 5 has in the present in stance an arcuate edge 16, and the said member 15 materially projectsabove the upper edges 6" of the ends 6. The upper member 15 of the front side 5 and the spaces around the'opening 14rbetween the end walls of the latter and the folding orcrease lines 6 and between the lower wall of said opening and the folding or crease line 12 are adapted to receive suitable advertising matter, and while the upper edge 16 of'the member 15 is shown in regular arcuate form, it may be modified without varying the features of the invention' The ends 6 are rectangularin contour and likewise the flaps 7, but the 1 aps 7 have their upper edges 7" terminating a distance below the upper edges 6" of the ends 6, the said flaps 7 having a length precisely equivalent to the width of the back 10; The ends 6 are also adapted to receive advertising mattenthereon. r
The flaps 7 in the form ofv the box as shown by Figs. 1, 2 and 3 have a single supplemental locking tongue 17 cut therein and substantiallyin longitudinal central relation to the main tongues 8 projecting centrally from'th'e outer edge portions of the said flaps 7. The back 10 has oppositely disposed pairs of spaced slots 18, which extend in transverse relation to the said back when the latter is opened and assumes a vertical position when the back is bent to perform its practical function. Theseslots 18 are adapted to receive the tongues 8 and are of much greater lengththan the width of said tongues, so that the tongues when inserted in these slots may have vertical slipping movement or play. The back 10 also has a single longitudinally disposed slot 19 adjacent to each extremity and outside of the pairs of transverse slots 18, for receiving the supplemental locking tongues 17 the latter being in a vertical position.
inserted in the said slots 19 by pushing the tongues upwardly in the slots 18, and by this means the back 10 and the tongues 8 are held against accidental disengagement" when the parts of the box are brought into cooperating relation as a containing means.
The form of the box shown by Figs. 4 and 5 is in all respects similar to that shown by Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and like reference characters are applied to the several parts. The difference in the construction shown by Figs. 1 and 5 and constituting a modification consists in forming each flap 7 with two supplemental locking tongues 20 above and below the longitudinal center of each tongue 8, the latter in the present instance being shorter than the tongues shown by the first form described and the outer edges 2201" each flap 7 being convergingly inclined towards the tongue instead of angularly straight as shown by Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Furthermore, to accommodate the two locking tongues 20 in each flap 7 the back 10 is formed with two longitudinal slots 23 in the opposite extremities thereof outside of the pairs of trans versely extending slots 18.
\Vhen the improved display box is packed for transportation or storage, it will be in the form shown by Fig. 2, and the user of the improved box will fold each of the blanks from a flattened form so that the bottom 9 is projected rearwardly in a horizontal plane and the back 10 in a vertical direction at right angles to the bottom 9. The ends 6 are then bent rearwardly at right angles to the opposite side portions of the front side 5 and the flaps 7 turned inwardly in reverse directionsat right angles to the ends 6, the tongues 8 being inserted through the pairs of slots 18', which will then be As shown by Figs. 1, 3 and 4, there will be ample room to slip the tongues vertically in the slots to efiect an engagement of either each single supplemental tongue 17 with its slot 19 or the two tongues- 20 with their slots 23, and after engagement of these supplemental locking devices has been acomplished, the fiaps 7 are pressed downwardly in normal position or so that their upper and lower edges will be coincident with the then upper edge of the back 10 and the lower limit or folding line of crease 13 of said back. It will be seen that the ends 6 project above the upper terminal edge of the back 10 and provide end guards or retaining means for the contents of the display box, or said ends as thus extended will provide advantageous end supports especially for bottles and large packages that will have the upper portions thereof extending above the uppermost wall of the display opening 1a in the front side 5.
After the box in either of its forms has thus been arranged in practical containing condition, the packages are inserted therein between the ends 6, back 10 and front side 5 and the articles will be exposed or displayed through the opening 14:. i
It is obvious that modifications in the proportions and general dimensions of the improved display box may be adopted without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention.
What is claimed as new is z.
A blank for a display box made from a single sheet of material and comprising a central portion having a curved edge, two double flaps contiguous with the side edges thereof, the outer section of each being of lesser height than the inner section and each carrying a reduced locking flap upon its extreme central edge, a rectangular double (ill flap extending from the edge opposite to the curved edge, the outer section of which is apertured to receive the locking flap of the respective first double flap, and cooperative locking means carried by the said outer sections and all of the double fiaps for holding the flaps interengaged and the locking flaps against sliding and unlocking.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM J. MITCHELL.
