R. VAN ROSEN' CARTON 'Fi led Feb. 211944 3 Shets-Sheet 1 Patented Oct. 17,1944.
CARTON Robert Van. Rosen, New York, N. Y., assixnor to I. Makowsky Corporation, a corporation of New- York, 7
I Application February 2, 1944, SerialNo. 520,779
' 10 Claims.
While not. confined to such use, the invention relates particularly to a cover for a .bottle or the like-especially cosmetic: bottles. which may be mounted on or in a base which. may form a seat for the cover. It is'a. purpose of the invention to produce such a device which: may be light. in
weight. and made with an economy of. paper or other material, composing it. The device may havev hollow or double walls connected by. edge or end walls so as to give the appearance of a device having thick walls. The material from which thedevice is. formed may be plain or colored or ornamented in any desired manner or fashion and may carry any desired advertisements or printed. matter selected.
The device may be. made from a single sheet of material suitably cut and folded and even without any pasting. In the accompanying drawings a specific embodiment of the invention. is shown. Figure 1 and 1a isa plan view 01' a blank from which the.
device may be formed; Figs- 2 and 3 are similar plan views: of blanks in-successive states of. being partially folded to form the device. Fig. 4 isa bottom plan view of a completed carton.
Figs; '5 and 6 are transverse vertical sections on planes at right angles to each other on the lines 55 and 6-8 respectively of Fig. 4. Fig.
7 is a horizontal section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 8 and Fig. 8 is a front elevation ofa carton inplace over a bottle'shown in dotted lines. 1
The device and the blank from which it is made, as well as. the various elements or segments thereof, may be changed as to size, shape and cooperation in various ways-without departing from the spirit of the invention, .but one specific form will be discussed in detail in connection with the drawings so. as to fully disclose the invention.
The device is rectangular and may be square' so that anysidemaybe the front in use. Without limiting the use of the device or the position of various members, for convenince of description arbitrary terms of location will be employed- One wall will-'be'referred to as the back wall. irrespective of where it may be positioned and likewise the walls will bereferred to as right and left as they appear on the drawings. Only one end of thedevice is closed and that end.
may be referred to as the top although it may beinany other position in-use; The various sections of" the blank which make up the car'- tonare of various sizes and shapes, some being longerin one direction and some inanother, but for clearances of description the termslength and ends are used, with respect to extent from top to bottom of Fig. 1 while width. or sides are used with respect toextent. from side to side of Fig. 1.
r In Figs. 1 and lathe blank from which thecarton. is to be formed is shown as'a single sheet of cardboard or other suitable material. The
solid lines of the drawings show lines on which the cuts-are made. The dot and dash lines show lines on. which folds are made and these may be scored or otherwise prepared for easy and accurate folding. The variousvv portions of the blank will be referredsto as members.
The: member H1 is to form the outside back wall of the finished carton. The member II attached to the. bottom of III is turned forward to form the bottom. rear wall. In-Vthe finished carton all of the folds will be approximately on right angles, and it will be understood that. in
referring to folding or: bending throughout the specification the right angle turn is indicated unless otherwise specified. The member l2 attachedv to the rear end ofv II is bent upward to lie parallel with the. member In and form the inner. back wall. The member I3 attached to the upper end of i2 is turned rearwardly to form the inner back top wall spacing the inner back wall. from the outer back wall. The mem-- ber attached to the back end of i3 is turned downward and hes against the upper end of the outer rear wall ID- to act as a brace for holding I the member li -in. position. The members l3 and M are shown somewhat narrower than the members l0, H and- IZ, but. this is not essential.
The member l5 attached to the rightv side of ill .forms the outer right side wall. Articulated;
to the bottom of I5 is the member l6. which. is turned inward to form the bottom right wall. The member 16 has its ends inclined inwardly as indicated. Articulated to the inner end of the member I6 is the member H: which is narrower than the member 15 and terms the'inner. right side wall. The upperv end of the member IT is provided with a cut-out tongue l8. At its upper end the member ll carries the member is which is turned inwardly. At. its upper end the wall member l5: carries the member 20 which is turned inwardly to form the upper right inner wall. The ends of 20 are tapered. Articulated to .the inner end. of member 20 is the member 7 2| which may be substantially the same width. as t the member I! and which engages the tongue I! to hold the inner wall I]: in: position. At
the iront'edge' of the right 'outer side wall II is the member 22 which is turned inwardly. The member 22 has a cut tongue 23 at its free edge. At the lower edge of the member 22 is a member 24 which is turned inwardly and form: a part or the inner bottom front wall. Articulated to the front side of the member I1 is the member 26 which, on being turned, lies substantially parallel to the member 22 and forms a par of the intermediate front wall.
The member 26 articulated at the left sideof the member I forms the outer left side wall. Articulated to the lower end of 26 is the member 21 which is turned inwardly toform the bottom left wall. The member 21 has its ends inclined inwardly as indicated. Articulated to the inner end .of the member 21 is member 28 which is narrower than the member 26 and forms the inner left side wall. The upper end of the member 26 is provided with a cut-out tongue 29. At its end the member 28 carries the member 30 which is turned inwardly. At its upper end the wall 26 carries the member 3| which is turned inwardly to form the upper left inner wall. The ends of 3| are tapered. Articulated to the member 3| is the member 32 which may be substantially the same width as the member 28 and which engages the tongue 29 to hold the inner left wall member 28 in position. At the front edge of the left outer side wall 26 is the member 33 which is turned inwardly. The member 33 has a cut tongue 34 at itsedge oppositely disposed to the tongue 23. At the lower edge of the member 33 is a member 35 which is turned-inwardly and cooperates with the member 24 to form a part of the inner bottom front wall. Articulated to the front side of the member 28 is the member 36 which, on being turned, lies substantially parallel to the member 33 and forms apart of the inner intermediate front wall. With the members folded as indicated the blank is shown in Fig. 2 with the exception that the members 25 and 36 are illustrated only partially folded so as to better reveal the members 22 and 23. Likewise themembers 24 and 35 are shown not folded inlli'ig. 2.
With the blank in the form shown in Fig. 2, the side walls i5, i1 and 26, 28 may be turned at right angles so that the edges of II and 28 as illustrated in Fig; 'I will lie upon and contact the inner back wall i2. The members 25 and 36 may then be folded to cause one to overlap the other to form the inner intermediate front wall, while the members 22 and 33 may be folded so that one overlies the other and the tongues 23 and 34 are caused to interlock to form the outer intermediate front wall. The blank in this condition is illustrated in Fig. 3. Articulated at the top of the outer back wall I is a member 3! which may be folded forward to engage the inner top walls I3, 20 and 3|, as well as the intermediate top wall members I9 and 30. Articulated at the front edge of the member 31 is a member 38 which may be folded downwardly to form the outer front wall lying substantially incontact with the interlocked members 22 and 33. At the bottom end of the member 36 is articulated the member 39 which may be turned inward to form the outer bottom front wall overlying the overlapping members 24 and 35. The member 39 has inclined sides and articulated to its rear edge is a member 40 which is narrower than the member 38 and maybe turned downward forming the inner front wall and having its sides substantially in contact with the inner side walls i1 and 28. At the upper end of the member 40 is articulated a member 4| which il turned toward the rear and forms an inner top wall. It overlies the members ll and I0 and conceal: them from view. If delired the side walls of the member 4| may engage the upper ends of the inner side walls i1 and 2!, and the end of the member 4| ma engage the inner rear wall l2, thus aiding in holding the members in proper relation, if need be. Friction may be sufllcient to hold the member 4| in place. It will be noted that the carton thus is made from a blank of a single piece of material folded in the proper way and held in final'form, without the use of any adhesive. If desired, however, adhesive may be employed to attach the finally placed member 4| to the members i9 and 30.
As the members are folded together, it will be noted that the rear inclined ends of i6 and 21 overlie the ends of the bottom rear wall member I. By this arrangement the bottom or open ends of the device have the appearance indicated in Fig. 4, in which the corners of the bottom wall all appear as beveled.
It will be noted that all of the bends in forming the carton are made in the same direction, that is, towards the observer in Fig. 1, excepting that the members I9, 30 and 4| are bent in the opposite direction. This leads to convenience and economy in scoring and manipulating the blank for forming the carton.
The inner wall members I1, 25, 28, 36, 40 and 4| may be narrower than the outer wall mem-' bers by approximately the length or double the length of the bottom wall members l6 or 21, etc., so that they may fold into place without displacing or bulging adjacent members. This exact relative size is not essential.
The members 25 and 36 overlap each other as do the members 24 and 35 and the members 22 and 33 but it is immaterial which overlies the other or which of each pair is nearer the front of the carton.
