ADOLPH DIETSCHE, J R. OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN LITH OGRAPHIC COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.

DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed March 7, 1922. Serial No. 541,851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH DIETSCHE, Junior, a citizen of the United States and a resident of New York, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to display devices N) and has for its object to provide a display device in the form of a. stand, adapted to securely support one or more containers, particularly common paper cartons, in such prominent manner as to attract attention.
with the device, for positively engaging the container, preventing its inadvertent displacement, means also being provided to prevent the device from overturning. A further object is to provide a unitary display device that can be cheaply constructed of inexpensive. material, the exposed area being adapted to receive inscription, as advertisements of the goods in the containers. These several objects are secured by the novel construction and disposition of parts formed preferably from a single blank in the manner hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings relating thereto, and in which Figure 1 is a perspectir e front view of the preferred embodiment of the device and illustrates its application. Fig. 2 is a trans verse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a. plan View of the unitary blank prior to being erected. Fig. 4 is a perspective front view showing a modified form of the display device as ap lied. Fig. is a similar but rear view of Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which said modification is erected. Figs. 1, 2, 4: and 5 are to one scale, while Figs. 3 and 6 are each to another and smaller scale.
The material of which the display device is constructed may be any flat sheet stock capable of being die cut to present a blank having a wall portion, 5, and base 6, their contiguous edges being articulated along bending line 7. The profile or contour of the blank may be plain or as fanciful as desired, preferably symmetrical about its vertical median plane, for obvious reasons. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the device is arranged to engage three cartons independently, two of which are in place while the Another object is to provide means, integralthe same. i
' space at the left is vacant in order to clearly illustrate the structure.
Near each end of wall 5, at a height from ing narrower than the carton so that the carton will cover the opening between cuts 10. Said carton may rest upon base 6, as best shown at the right hand end of Fig. 1, the arrangement being such as to hold the carton firmly against the wall and also prevent it from moving laterally on the base.
The center carton, 1.2, is shown held to the. wall by down-reaching wing 14, formed from wall 5 by side cuts 15 and bottom out 16, said wing having two transverse folding lines 17 and 18, at the top and near the bottom, respectively, presenting when bent, a tab 19. The width of wing 14 is such as to substantially cover the top of the carton and tab 19 is bent on said second folding line to be inserted between the front vertical body wall of the carton and its intucked cover flap, the function of-said tab being similar to that of'wings 8 in'maintaining the cartons in position, and opening 14, caused-by extending the wing horizontally, is obscured by the carton, as is apparent.
In some cases, in. order to further support the device to maintain wall 5 in upright position, extend to the rear from said wall, preferably back of one of thecartons, the same being shown at the left hand end of Figs. 1 and 3. Said easelsupport, as 20, is formed by incising wall 5, as at 21, the cut e-xtendin from transverse cut 9 to'bending crease and preferably within the space covered by a carton.
one or more easels may be formed to vertical crease, 22, is formed in'a similar manner from near the opposite end semi-circular detent 23, sheared from wall 5 centrally about'bending line 22 at a point about midway its height and bent to extend outwardly on horizontal crease 24. The upper, curved edge of said detent has a recess 25,suited to receive an edge of the easel.
Although ,the modification illustrated in Figs. 4, 5- and 6 shows a narrower blank adapted .to receive a single carton, the width is optional and can be increased to suit requirements. The main upright portion, 30, of the blank has a'single central longitudinal incision, 31, 'bisecting a transverse cut, 32, partially separating base 33, articulated by crease lines 34, extending from the side edges inward to cut-32. The upper end of incision 31 bisects a cut line,
'35, preferably curved upwardly to join straight longitudinal incisions 36, spaced apart and in parallelism, to suit the width of the carton to be engaged by the device.
'Articulatingcrease 37 connects the upper ends of incisions 36, permitting the bending .of wing 38'outwardly to rest over the carton, tab 39 of wing 38 bending on line 40 to ,be entered between the front vertical wall of the cartonand its intucked cover flap, as best shown in Fig. 4. vAt the same time easel members 41 are out-turned on articulating creases 42, the same being in alinement with incised lines 36 and extendingbetween the ends of incisions 35- and 32.
.Inerecting the device of this modification, the carton 'is pressed to extend partially through th opening originally occupied by elements 38, 39 and 41, which, when tab 39 is adjusted,'maintain the carton; free from moi ement and at the same time the easel elements 41 are held extended by the carton in opposite direction to thatof base 33, providingran efficient support for the device. From the foregoingit will be seen that a unitary display device is disclosed, capable of sustaining cartons in an erect position when its articulated parts are-extended, and which, when in flat blank form, can be packed in small compass for shipment or storage, the matter of erecting being clearly ...apparent.
ing line in said sheet connecting said portions, a downreaching wing formed from said wall, the lower edge of said wing being spaced apart from said folding line, and an easel portion formed from said wall between said wing and folding line and articulated to said wall along a line approximately normal to said folding line, the width of saideasel portion being less than the width'of said wing.
2. In a display device of sheet material adapted to display a container comprising vertical body walls and having a cover provided with a flap adapted for tucking in against the upper portion of one of said body walls, the combination of a wall and a base, a folding line therebetween, a downreaehing wingformed from said wall, the lower edge of said wing being spaced apart from said folding line, and an easel portion formed from said wall between said wing and folding line and articulated to said wall along a line approximately normal to said. folding line, the width of said easel portion being less than the width of said wing, said win being adapted for insertion between the vertical body wall and the intucked cover flap of the container.
3. In a display device of sheet material adapted to display a container comprising vertical body walls in, having a cover provided with a flap adapted for tucking in against the upper portion of one of said body walls, the combination of a wall and a base, afolding line therebetween, a downreaching wing formed from said wall, said wing having two transverse folding lines thereacross, the first at its jointure with said wall and the second spaced therefrom, and an easel portion formed from said wall between said wing vand folding line and articulated to said wall along a line approximately normal to said folding line, the width of said easel portion being less than the width of said'wing, said wing being adapted to overlie the top of a container, that portion of said wing beyond said-second folding line being adapted for insertion between the vertical body wall and the intucked cover flap of the container.
In witness whereof, I hereby aflix my sig- ADOLPH DIETSOHE, JR.
