Description

DISPLAY DEVICE Filed Aug. 17, 1942 Patented Oct. 10, 1944 UNITED STATES iTENT OFFICE DISPLAY DEVICE Paul M; ,Ressin'genhicagm Ill.
. Application August 17, 1942, Serial No. 455,071
' sciai'ms. (c1. 2li-72) My invention relates to an improvement in display devices and has for one purpose the Aprovision of a display adapted for small articles such as pencils, fountain pens, and the like.
Another purpose is the provision of a display which may be made from a minimum number of pieces of cardboard or equivalent material, the display herein being formed of but two pieces..
Another purpose is the provision of an advertising and display lunit which may be shipped flat and is readily assembled.
Other purposes will appear from time to time in the course of the specification and claims. v
I illustrate my invention more or less diagrammaticallyin the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view;
Fig. 2` is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is an illustration of one of the two blanks of which the device is formed.
Like parts are indicated by like symbols throughout the specification and drawing.
Referring to the drawing, and referring first to the view of the blank in Fig. 3, l indicates a central portion which in the finished article, as shown in Fig. l, constitutes a horizontal platform upon which the goods to be dispensed or dis played may be positioned. The portion I has secured along one side thereof a bendable flap 2, which is partially separated at the ends by slots 3. It is also provided with a notch or cutaway portion 4, the purpose of which will laterA appear.
At the two corners opposite the flap 2 the member I is cut away, as at 5, the cutaway portion terminating in slots 6 at right angles to the slots 3, the slots 6 extending to a rounded portion l. as shown in Fig. 3.
The flaps I and 2 may be separated or defined by rouletting or grooving. as at 8, or any other means may be employed folq rendering a fold easy along this point. However, if desired, merely a guiding line may be employed. At the opposite end edges of the ap 2 are lateral extensions I0 separated from the ap 2 as by lines of demarcation or lines of fold II, which may be rouletted or grooved, as desired. Each portion H3 extends outwardly from the flap 2 a substantial distance, and is then provided with an oiiset or angular portion I2, which has an inwardly extending portion I3. The two portions I3 extend inwardly toward each other, as shown in Fig. 3, and may be provided with an adhesive surface I4.
In the assembly of the device it will be understood that the flaps I and 2 are bent apart along the line 8, and the extensions Il! then are bent along the lines of separation I I and may beY rearwardly extended to the position in which they are shown in Fig. 1'. The iiaps i3 are'then glued or otherwise secured to, the rear 'of a separate portion 20, which will later be described in more detail.
It will be observedv that the gummed portions I4 of the ends I3 are separated from the portions I2 by'lines of fold I5. When the parts are being assembled, as shown in'Fig. 1, the folds lines -II and I5 may lie in thesame plane. The shape and proportion of the parts are such that the portion 20`is thereby supported at the ends of the arms I2, just about midway the front and rear of the portion I if the position I is folded into the position in which it is shown in Fig. l. When it is so folded, the slots 6 interlock with the inner edge of the members I2, as at IS, and the unit is held together in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, but may readily be disassembled by merely lifting up the rear edge of the portion I.
The second part 20 may be of any suitable size, shape or proportion. and may include advertising or display material. It is herein shown as having a downward extension ZI, which is aligned with the notch or cutaway portion 4 of the member I, which permits the member I to be flexed upwardly away from the horizontal in which it is shown in Fig. 1, in order to permit the collapsing of the device for shipment.
Assuming that the base portion I is moved into the same plane as the iiap 2, then the device may readily be moved in a iiat position, and they may be stacked and shipped flat. It will be understood, in the use of the device, for example in dispensing pencils or pens, a fountain pen dispensing or display case B, as shown in dotted line of Fig. 2 may be employed. If the lid 3| is raised, the pens or pencils 32 are exposed to public view. Notice that when the rear cover is in the dotted line position of Fig. 2, the point of the member 2| extends downwardly in front of it, as do the scroll ends 25. The pencils or pens 32 are themselves exposed, and on the face of the member 20 any suitable display or advertising material may be lpositioned having whatever relation is desired to the dispensed goods.
It will be realized that. whereas I have illustrated and described a practical and operative device, nevertheless many changes may be made in the size, shape, number and disposition of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore wish that the description and drawing be taken as in a broad sense illustrative or diagrammatic, rather than as a limitation to my precise showing.
I claim:
1. In a form for a display device, a generally rectangular main panel having two free corners and three free edges, a foldable flap along the fourth edge, lateral extensions foldably mounted at the opposite side edges of the foldable flap, said lateral extensions including angularly upwardly and forwardly extending portions terminating in laterally inwardly extending foldable arm portions extending inwardly toward each other in a plane slightly forward of the edge of the main panel opposite to said foldable flap.
2. In a form for a display device, a generally rectangular main panel having two free corners and three edges, a foldable flap along the fourth edge, lateral extensions foldably mounted at the opposite side edges of the foldable nap, said lateral extensions including angularly upwardly and forwardly extending portions terminating in laterally inwardly extending folclable arm portions extending inwardly toward each other in a plane slightly forward of the edge of the main panel opposite to said foldable iiap, said laterally extending foldable arm portions being gummed.
3. In a form for a display device, a generally rectangular main panel having two free corners andthree free edges, a foldable ap along the fourth edge, lateral extensions foldably mounted at the opposite side edges of the foldable flap, said lateral extensions including angularly upwardly 4and forwardly extending portions terminating in laterally inwardly extending foldable arm portions extending inwardly toward each other in a plane slightly forward of the edge of the main panel opposite to said foldable flap,
the free corners of said main panel being notched to receive the angularly extending portions of said lateral extensions when the form is folded to final position.
4. In a demountable dispensing and display device, a main form having a central panel adapted, when the device is assembled, to be in a generally horizontal position, a foldable vertical flap along the forward edge thereof, lateral extensions foldably mounted at the opposite end edges of said foldable flap, said lateral extensions including upwardly and outwardly extending portions and terminating in laterally inwardly extending foldable arms, and an additional vertical panel to which said foldable arms are secured, said additional vertical panel when the forms are in nal assembled position lying in a plane intermediate the forward and rear edges of the central panel.
5. In a demountable dispensing and display device, a main form having a central panel adapted, when the device is assembled, to be in a generally horizontal position, a foldable vertical flap PAUL M. RESSINGER.
