The said bottom portion 3 is creased at M to allow upward folding thereof; thereby the device may be collapsed even when the bottom is in the secured position. It will be understood that the free end of the bottom forming portion 3 may be adhesively or otherwise permanently secured to the end 8 of the card or back forming and connecting sheet 5 but in practice it has been found that the operation of the tongue and slot securing means facilitates the manufacture of the improved device.

The formation of the improved device of a two piece blank constructed and arranged as shown particularly facilitates the economical manufacture of the device and it will be noted from the stipple shading of the set up device, shown in Figure 1, that in the assembling of the two blanks the prepared or printed surfaces of the blanks are reversed so as to bring said printed surfaces into view. If the container were composed of a single blank obviously the exposed surface at the back of the device would be the reverse or unprinted surface in such instances where the composing material of the box is prepared and printed on one side only. In this case the show card 6 would have to be folded on itself in the usual manner or a separate card would be employed to permit the reverse exposure.

The improved container, as stated, is packed within the gross container along with the merchandise to'be displayed. When so packed the device is in its folded or collapsed position as shown in Figure 5. In this condition the connection of the free end of the bottom forming portion would preferably have been effected in the first folding of the container.

The operator in setting up the improved receptacle is only required to open the folded device by a simple and'self-apparent operation. A portion of the merchandise may then be taken from the packing container and placed en masse within the receptacle portion of the display container.

The weight of even a small portion of the merchandise will tend to keep down the bottom and when the bottom is so held pressure is created to spread the walls Where they are held in a rigid set up position.

It will be understood, as previously stated, that the container may be of different polygonal shapes and it should be noted that the bottom forming portion of the container would then be of a conforming shape so as to closely fit, thereby 6 presenting also friction which will tend in conjunction with pressure, to retain the bottom and. walls in place.

Various modifications may be made in carrying out the details of the invention hereinbefore de- 10 scribed and it is to be understood that any modification coming fairly within the terms of the appended claims shall be covered thereby.

I claim:

1. A container of the class described composed of a strip of sheet material having its ends united by an intermediate connecting piece and folding to form walls of the container, a bottom forming piece hingedly and detachably secured respectively at the front and rear ends to said strip and/ said bottom forming piece being foldable on itself to permit collapsing of the container without release of the detachable connection.

2. A container of the class described composed of a strip of sheet material having its ends united by an intermediate connecting piece and folding to form walls of the container, a bottom forming piece hingedly and detachably secured respectively at the front and rear ends to said strip, the front hinge being located above the bottom edge of said strip and said bottom forming piece being foldable on itself to permit collapsing of the container without release of the detachable connection.

3. A container of the class described composed of a strip of sheet material having its ends united by an intermediate connecting piece and folding to form walls of the container, a bottom forming piece hingedly and detachably secured respectively at the front and rear ends to said strip, said bottom forming piece being foldable on itself to permit collapsing of the container without release of the detachable connection, and said detachable connection comprising a tongue and slot device with interlocking means preventing accidental pulling out of said tongue.
