UNITED STATES RAYMOND BURNHAM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY STAND AND CONTAINER.
Application filed May 26, 1925.
This invention relates to an improved combined container or box and display stand adapted for containing goods when shipped and to be set up for display and advertising the same as well as facilitating the dispensing thereof or removal from the box or container when on display for sale.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel container of the above character which is made from a single blank of novel construction bent in a novel manner and adjustable to display one or more rows or tiers of articles such as cartonsor containers for cosmetics, tooth paste, or the like, in elongated tubes and so constructed that when the upper row of containers or articles is removed, the device may be adjusted to display the lower row or layer with equal facility of vision, so that the contents will not be precluded from view.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined container and display stand which will not require an extra support or easel for disposing the same in an inclined position in order to display the contents, but will display the same by means of part of the box which also serves to reinforce the container.
Other and further objects of the invention consist of certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and described.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the container is made;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container showing the arrangement of articles therein for display and sale;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device showing two rows of packages or articles superposed one upon the other and indicating the facility with which the same may be removed;
Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view partly broken away and showing the manner of folding the blank to produce the container;
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 3 but with the upper row of articles removed and the device adjusted to display the lower row or series of articles; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring to. the drawings in detail, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several yiews, the container is produced from a Serial No. 33,034.
blank shown in Fig. 1 which includes a bottom portion 7 formed with arcuate or outwardly convexed cuts or slits 8 near but slightly spaced from each side to provide tongues 9. The bottom 7 also has side extensions 10 foldable along the dotted or scored lines 11 parallel to the folding lines 12 at the side edges of the bottom and further provided with folding lines 13 f0rming foldable extension portions let of the same width as the portions 10 and integral therewith but provided with narrow extensions or flanges 15 there-beyond at the ends of the side extensions.
The opposite sides of the bottom forming the front and back of the container are provided with extensions 16 foldable on the lines 17 and having at their ends, tongues or flaps 18 foldable inwardly at right angles along the lines 19 to overlap eachother inwardly of the sides 10, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6 of the drawings. The flaps 18 are of substantially the same length as the parts 16 and 10 and are severed from the parts 10 and 14: as indicated at 20, but it is to be understood that the proportions of these parts may vary, especially in accordance with the shape of the container or box. That is, the box may be elongated from front to rear or from side to side instead of being substantially square or may be of any other suitable shape.
One side 16 at the front of the box is provided with a similarly shaped extension 21 foldable along the line 22 defining the outer longitudinal edge of the side 16. The extension 21 at its outer edge is provided with a section 23 foldable along the dotted or scored line 24 and corresponding in size and shape to the bottom 7 to form a false bottom and easel or support for the articles or goods, as will be hereinafter pointed out. The section 23 is further provided at its outer edge with a narrow extension 25 foldable on the line. 26 parallel to the lines 22 and 24 and another narrow extension 27 corresponding to the section 25 substantially at the free end provided-witha central tongue 28 of reduced size or length. It may also be mentioned that the extension 27 is foldable along the line 29.
At the opposite side 16 corresponding to the back of the container or box, the latter is provided with an extension 30 foldable along the line 31 parallel to the folding line 17 and with a further extension 32 on the extension 30, foldable on the line 33, while the extension 32 is provided with a narrow flap 0r tongue 34 extending throughout the length thereof and foldable on'the line 35. The parts 30 and 32 form a top or cover for the container and the folding line 33 is in the center thereof. Both sections 30 and 32 are wider than the adjacent side section 16 and the section 30 is provided with an arouate slit or cut 36 providing a tongue 37 foldable' on the line 33 at the central portion thereof. However, the tongue 37 is quite wide ocoupying one-third or more of the length of the folding line 33 at its straight edge and producing a. tongue of substantially semi circularly shape like the tongues 9. Of course, the length of the tongue or tab 37 may vary. 7
ln folding the box, the sides 16 are'folded upwardly at right angles along' the lines 17 and the flaps or extensions 18 are turned inwardly at right angles along the folding lines 19 to overlap one another as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The sides 10 are then foldedupwardly at right angles along the lines 12 against the flaps 18 so that the folding lines 11 will embrace the top edges of the flaps 18, after which the flaps or extensions 14' are folded over the top edges thereof and down into and against said flaps 18 at the inside of the container or box.
7 This brings the tongues or flanges 15 against the bottom surface at the inside and they are directed inwardly at right angles so that their free edges will extend beneath the tongues 9, beneath which they are inserted by raising said tongues 9. This retains said tongues in position and reinforces the sides false bottom section 23, which is disposed flat against the bottom surface. The sections 30 and 32 will then form the top of the container or box and by turning in the tongues 34 downwardly against the. inner face of the side section 21 by folding the sections 30 and 32 as along the line 31, a complete container is thus provided to accommodate one or more rows of articles designated at 38, the
latter preferably being two rows arranged in superposed relation.
h, However, when the device is used for display purposes as a stand and carton or container, the part 21 is spaced and inclined rearwardly from the adjacent part 16 and falsebottom 23 is disposed in an inclined position and folded along the line 26 as shown in Fig. 3 of" the drawings, with the parts 27 and 28 folded beneath to form a support or easel for the false bottom. The sections 32 and 34 are then folded forwardly along the line 33 so that the tongue 37 will extend upwardly, thus supporting the boxes in superposed relation and in an inclined position with the rear ends thereof spaced from the back of the container, and upright display car-d thus provided as shown in Fig. 3. It should also be noted that the part 34 terminates at or slightly above the folding line 26 of the false bottom, while the part 25 is slightly inclined toward the rear. When the upper row of articles 28 is removed, the lower row may be displayed so as to be readily viewed by prospective purchasers by raising the section 27 substantially in the same plane with the section 25 and turning the ton ue 28 under along the line of fold thereof designated at 39, thus raising the false bottom or section 23 to a higher elevation or inclined position whereby the articles will be projected above the top of the container as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. This forms a desirable and effective display stand, and the portions 32 and 37 may bear upon the front surface thereof, as well as the surrounding outer surfaces of the walls of the box, suitable price information or advertising relative to the goods contained in the cartons or articles displayed in the container. 7
While I have described the invention in its preferred form, it is to be understood that certain changes may be made in the construction and arrangements of parts described, without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as the same are included within the scope of the claims.
