The apices of the triangular flanges 21, 23 and the points of the notches in the cut-away sides coincide with the score line 22 and at their bases are provided with the tongues 3|, 32, which interlock to hold the side flanges 21, 23 and the end flange 25 in position. The trapezial sections 29, 39 have locking tongues 33, :34 and wing sections 35, 36, the wing sections being adapted to be folded along the score lines 31, 38 so that they lie against'the' sec-' tions 29, 30, while the tongues 33, 34 interlock with slits in the end flange 26 to hold the two sides and end of the cover in position. The wings 35, 35 are folded in against the sections 29, 33 so as to give a rigid bearing to this section of the cover when the box is' in display position.

When forming the box from the blank illustrated in Fig. 4, the sides and end of the body of the box are bent along the score lines, which are indicated by dotted lines in this figure, until they are at right angles to the bottom of the box when the tongues l5, I5, I1, and I3 are interlocked to secure the body of the boxin box forming relation. The wings 35, 36 are then folded inwardly against the sections 29, 3||,'and the end flange 26 turned up at right angles to the panel 24. The tips of the wings 35, 36, extendingibeyond the score lines shown thereon, will overlap the tongues 33, 34 which are then bent inwardly and interlocked in the slots shown in the end flange 28.

The blank is next bent on the score line 33 so that the panel 25 will forman end flange of the cover, and the tongues 3|, 32 are interlocked to hold the flanges 25, 21, 28 in position. The box and cover are now completely formed, the cover beingconnected by the hinge section 2|, which Joins the lower edge of the flange 25 to the top edge of the end l2. The hinge 2| is scored along both edges, as indicated, so that it forms a hinged connection between the cover and the body of the box., The cover can now be swung about this hinged connection to close the box, the hinge 2| lying inside of the end-flange 25 and outside 'of the end l2 of the box, as indicated in Figs. 2-3.

When the box is fllled with merchandise and shipped, it is closed as shown in-Fig. 3 with the price or display card l9 folded down flat under the cover.

When the merchant receives the package, he

swings back the cover, on thehinged portion 2| and turns that part of the cover, formed bythe panel 23 and triangular flanges 21, 23, down against the end 2 of the box. The other part ofthe cover, formed by the section 24 and trapezial flanges 29, 33 and end flange 26, is bent back on the score line 22 so that the panel 24 lies against the bottom of the box. When this has been done, the sections of the cover occupy the position shown in Figs. 1-2 and the hypotenuse of the triangular sections and the base of the trapezial sections lie in a straight line and form a support for the box, which can then be placed on the counter with one 'end resting'on the triangular section and the back braced by the trapezial and the panel 63' bent back so that it lies oute. side of the section 59. The short end of the price panel 43 is'then placed with 'its loweredge be-' sections. It will'be noted that the portions cut from the cover flanges to provide the flanges 21,

.29 and 23, 30 are right angled triangular sections so that the panels 23, 24, when bent on the scoreline 22, form a dihedralangle of substantially and the edges of the triangular and trapezial sections lie in a straight ,line when the box is in display position. The doubled-down portions 35, 36 serve to strengthen the trapezial sections 29, 30 and give them additional rigidity to support or brace the bottom of the box, which becomes the back side of the box when it is in display position.

The price card l9 can now be raised into the position shown in Figs. L2 and preferably bears a price legend or other matter advertising the goods which are displayed in the box. 'It will be noted that my improvedbox istilted at a very high angle when in display} position and that any merchandise contained therein can; 10

be readily seen by the prospective purchaser even through the box be nearly empty. Also, the box being supported on its end and being relatively deep, will occupy very little space on the counter.

The modified form of my invention, shown in Figs.'5 '9, issimilar to that just described in all its principal features, except that the price card is preferably formed from a separate piece and the cover is hinged to the box at its opposite end. -'Ihe body of ,the box has a bottom panel 40, sides 4|, 42,. and end 43, and'tong'ues 44, 45,

46, and .41 which interlock at'the two ends of the box to hold, the sides and'ends in position.

A price panel 43 is divided by a score line 49 into two parts, the shorter part having a slit 53 which interlocks with one ofthe vflaps on the: tongues flange 53 to form one part of the cover. The flange is separated by a score line 59 from a section 63, which has a lip 5| adapted to be folded around the flaps 55, 51 and the lip 5| tucked under the tongue 52 to hold ,the'end of thecover in positlon- The panel 5| has two trapezial side flanges 53, 64 which are provided with flaps 55, 55, similar to the flaps 35, 36' of Fig. 4. The panel 5| is joined to a section 61' which forms both an end of the the cover may be moved from closed to display position, The end section 611s joined to two short sections 53, 69, separated by score lines and provided for the purpose of permitting the section 51 toserve its double function. The'sections 53.

and their length will vary with the depth of the box. The height of this section is equal to the diflerence in length between the end 51 and the combined length of the tongues 45 and 13, or 41 and 12. In case the length of the panel 51 and 'ing flaps 5s, 51 which'interlock with theend .59, form a filler sectionthat serves to connect the hinge or end panel 511 to'the bottompanel 45 depth of the boxequals'the combined length of l tongues 46 and 13, then the section 53, 53 will disappe'an'and the panel51 will join directly to thebottom 40'."

In forming the box from the blank'shown in Fig.8, the sides, 42 and end- 43 are; bentup into' vertical position. Atithe opposite end," the panel 69'isthen bent upward into avertical'plane tween the section-63 and the two tongues 45, 41, which are bent inwardly and interlocked outside flap on the tongue 46 interlocking with the slit." in the price panel. The sections 53, 59 thus form a short double section projecting 'upins'ide of the box, the end panel 61 at this time lying wholly 75.

70, of the price card and the sections 53, 69,with the outside of the box, with the score line ll coinciding with the lower edge of the box.

The parts of the cover are now iolded into position and interlocked to form a cover with an end flange 58, two triangular side flanges 54, 55, and two trapezial side flanges 88, 64, one end 01' the coverbeing joined to the panel 81 at the score line H.

The panel 61 is now bent upwardly until it contacts with the end of the box and forms an outer end panel for the body of the box, the two' tongues 12, I3 having been interlocked to form an end flange for the cover. At the same time that the panel 61 is swung upwardly, the blank is bent along the scoreline H so that the cover flange formed by the sections I2, 13 comes in contact with the end of the box and the cover is swung down into closed position, as shown in Fig. 7. with the price panel ll lying inside of the cover.

When the merchant receives the box, it is filled with merchandise and closed, as shown in Fig. 7, but on opening the box, the cover is turned back so that the ,end panel 61 engages with the bottom of the box, as shown in Fig. 6, and the panel 5| 0! the cover also engages the bottom of the box with the panel I, the triangular flanges 54, engaging the end 43 of the body of the box, as shown in Figs. 5-6.

With the cover 01' the box inthis position, the merchant places the box on the counter. resting on the triangular sections BI, 55, and'that part of the cover having the trapezial sections 83, 64 forms a brace for the back or bottom of the box to prevent its overturning. The price tag can now be bent into vertical position and the contents of the box will be advantageously displayed to the prospective customer. It will be noted that the box, when in display position. is supported at such a high angle that even when the box is nearly empty the few remaining articles will still be visible to anyone passing in front of the box.

It will be noted that the angle between the two sections of the cover flange is a right angle, that folding the blank to form the box, it willbe understood that the exact sequence described need not be followed but that the description given is illustrative of only one method of folding the blank, and the sequence of operations may be varied to suit the convenience of the person or machine that folds the blanks.

While I have disclosed two specific embodiments of my invention. it will beunderstood that these are but illustrative, and are not to be considered as limitations of theinvention. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that these can be incorporated in many diflerent modiflcations, and I claim as my invention all such modiflcations and forms as some within the scope of my claims.
