My invention relates to cartons or boxes, and particularly to display cartons of the type in which small articles of merchandise are displayed on counters, show-cases and the like so as to invite the attention of customers.

Cartons of this general type as heretofore used usually consist of a box portion for holding the merchandise and a cover part which is flexibly connected to the box so that 1t will serve as a lid to close the box during shipment or storage of the merchandise, and has inclined sides which will serve to support the box in display position when the lid is turned under the box. These boxes display the merchandise very advantageously but have these characteristic objections that the cost'of manufacture is high because of the large waste of cardboard or other material in cutting out the blank forms, and also because the cover does not securely support the box in display position, especially when the box is high or deep in relation to its width from front to rear.

I have overcome these defects and objections to prior boxes by the present invention which has among its many objects to produce a display carton and blank for forming the same that is economical in labor and material, can be easily made 'without special machinery, forms .a strong and durable container for ship ing and storing the merchandise, and will he both sturdy and attractive when in display position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a single piece blank for a display carton so shaped that adjacent blanks when being cut from a sheet of cardboard or the like, will interfit so that the amount of trimmings or Waste material will be a minimum.

Another object isl to provide a display carton in which the merchandise will. be displayed thru a large area in the front as well as thru the top when the box is in display position.

Another object is to provide adisplay box having an end display opening wherein the flap that closes the opening in shipping position overlaps the edges of the opening, thereby maintaining a tight package.

Another object is to provide in a display box a cover which will closerthe top of the box, and, when turned under the box to sup-.

Another object is to provide a displa box in which the triangular-supports or si es of the cover extend the full length of and support the box in display position, thereby givmg a long and firm support for the. box in display position, and obviating the necessity for flanges at the top edges of the boxbody.

Still another object is to provide a display box having a display card that may be formed integral with the box, or secured to one end thereof, and be adapted to fold down under the box cover when the box is closed.

Still another object is to provide a display carton in which the cover is hinged or connected to one end panel of the box so that a part of the panel will be turned down when the cover is turned to display position.

Yet another object is to provide a display box in which the turned-down part of the front end will provide a panel for carrying advertising or price legends of the merchandisc in the box. I

The above and other objectsand advan-v tages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art as the following description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numbers indicate-the same parts in the several views.

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank for forming the carton shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and illustrates how adjacent blanks inter-fit to reduce waste material to a minimum;

Fig. 3 shows the box in fully closed position in which the end 24' closes and overlaps the edges of the opening in the .end of the box, and the display card 55 is folded down under the cover 42.

Fig. 4 shows the box in partly open position and clearly indicates how the trapezoidal part 24 overlaps the end opening.

Fig. 5 shows a modified form of blank in which the display card 55 is formed as an integral part of the box blank. This form provides a slightly stronger box but is not so economical of material.

Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate a further modification in which a larger part of the end of the box is open for display and the down turned part of the end is inclined to provide a display panel.

Figs. 10 and 11 show anoth 3r modified form of my invention in which the

This construction provides a longer panel 24' which makes a much more attractive display than the shorterpanel 24' of Fig. 8. Inthis modification, the cover does not extend the full length of the box in display position, but the support is long enough for the box tofibe firmly supported under all ordinary. conditions. The'parts of the cartons in Figs. 8 to 11 that correspond to similar parts in Figs. 1 to 7 are indicated by the same reference numbers, but they have not been describedin detail because to do so would be needless repetition..

In all of the adaptations of my invention 7 that I have illustrated, the boxes are relatively high in ratio to the width and length, but the invention is just as applicable to shallow boxes. In the case of shallow boxes, the end flaps 27,

34, 35 need not be long enough to interlock, but appropriate slits are provided in the-ends 23, 24 with which the flaps interlock.

While I have shown the panel 55 as an integral part of the carton in Figs. 6 to 11, it will be understood that the panel may be formed as a separate piece as in Figs. 1 to 4. In all cases, the panel 55 will be folded down under the box cover when the box is closed, and turned up to display position when the box is open.

It will be noted in each form of the invention illustrated, except Figs. 10- and 11, that the part of the end 24 that lies inside of the

34,35, is not greater in height than one half the height of'the box. If the score line 39 should be placed above the center, the score line 43 would be above the bottom of the box when the cover is turned to display position and a part of the cover would have tobe turned up, so that the support would not be the full length of the box, which is the case in Figs. 10 and 11.

While I have shown several embodiments of my improvedcarton, it will be understood that I am not tobe limited thereto, and that the terms and drawings are used only to illustrate how the invention may be embodied in practical form, and are not to be considered as limitations. Many other modifications'and changes will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and need not be specifically opening, a flap connected at one edge to the cover and at its opposite edge to the said side of the box adjacent the lower edge of said opening, said flap being wider at the edge joining the cover than the top of said open- A display carton comprising-a box and a cover, one side of the box having an opening of less width than the said side, a flap hingedly connecting said cover to the box adjacent said opening, said flap being wider than'said' opening and adapted to close the same when the cover is in closed position.

As an article of manufacture, a display a cover having a flat top, an end flange and two triangular sides; one side of the box being partially open or cut-away,the cover at one side being hinged to the box by means adapted to close the cut away side when the cover is in closed position and adapting the cover to be folded under the box in display I position.

A display carton comprising a body section having a bottom and four upturned sides; a lid section having a flat top, a rectangular end and two triangular sides; one upturned side being cut-away to display the contents of the box; and means connecting the lid'to said cut-away side adapted to cover the cutaway portion when'the lid is in closed position, and to permit the lid to be turned under the box to support it in display position.

14. In a display carton comprising a box portion having a bottom, two sides and two ends, the sides having flaps adapted to secure the ends and sides in box forming position,

one of the ends being slit to interlock with the adjacent flaps, the other end having two slits and a score line jointly-extending thereacross, the flaps adjacent said other end adapted to extend thru said slits so that part of said end lies within and part without said flaps; and a cover portion having two triangular sides and an end portion joined to said other end of the box portion by a flexible v turned under the box to support it on said triangular sides. 15. A display carton comprising a box portion having a bottom, two sides and two ends, the sides having flaps adapted to secure the ends and sides in box forming position, one of the ends being slit to interlock with the adjacent flaps, the other end having two slits and a score line jointly extending thereacross,

the flaps'adjacent said other end adapted to extend thru said slits so that part of said end lies within and part without said flaps; and a cover portion having two triangular sides and an end portion joined .to said other end of the box portion by a flexible'joint substantially at the points of said triangular sides, whereby said other end may be folded on said score line and the cover turned under the box to support it on said triangular sides, and a display card secured to said first mentioned end and adapted to be folded under said cover when the latter is in box closing position.

A display carton comprising a box portion having a bottom and four sides; a cover portion having a top, an end and two triangular sides; one edge of the cover being hingedly connected to the top edge of one side of the body portion, said side being scored substantially midway thereof and the part above the score adapted to turn down when the cover is in display position. As an article of manufacture, a blank for a folding box comprising bottom and cover portions, the bottom portion having lateral extensions adapted to form the sides of the box, flaps on the lateral extensions adapted to secure the extensions in box forming position, a longitudinal extension at one end of the bottom adapted to form one end of the box, a second longitudinal extension at the other end joining the bottom and cover portions and adapted to form the other end of the box, there being creases at the top and bottom of the second extension at its junction with the bottom and cover portions and a crease intermediate its height forming a hinge for opening and closing the cover, the flaps at the adjacent ends of the lateral extensions having cut-away portions at approximately the same height as the intermediate crease, said cover portion having inclined side portions 'and flaps adapted to form its sides and end thereof, there being creases between adjacent parts of the blank on which the parts maybe folded into box forming and opened and closed positions.

19. As an article of manufacture, a blank for a folding display box comprising bottom and. cover portions and an intermediate end section, score lines forming flexible connections of the end section to the respective bottom and cover portions, a second score line intermediate the top and bottom of the end section, flaps on the body portion for holding the end section below the intermediate score in box forming position, and extensions and flaps on the bottom and cover portions for forming the other sides and ends of the body and cover.

20. As an article of manufacture, a blank for a folding box comprising bottom and cover portions, the bottom portion having lateral extensions adapted to form the sides of the box, flaps on the lateral extensions adapted to secure the extensions in box forming position, a longitudinal extension at one end of the bottom adapted to form one end of the box, a second, longitudinal extension at the other end oining the bottom and cover portions and adapted to form the other end of the box, there being creases at the top and bottom of the second extension at its junction with the bottom and cover vportions and a crease intermediate its height. forming a hinge for opening and closing the cover, the flaps at the adjacent ends of-the lateral extensions having cut-away portions at approximately the same height as the intermediate crease, said cover portion having inclined side portions and flaps adapted to form its sides and end thereof, the flaps on the extension and cover portions having in- 1 tom and cover portions, a second score line intermediate the top and bottom of the end section extending part way across, and slits extending from the ends of the second score to the edges of the section, fiaps on the body portion for holding the end section below the intermediate score in box forming position, and extensions and flaps on the bottom and cover portions for forming the other sides and ends of the body and cover.

22. As an article of manufacturaa blank fora folding display box comprising bottom and cover portions, said bottom portion having end and side sections defined by score lines, flaps on the side sect1ons for securing v the sides and ends in box formingposition,

23. As an article of manufacture, a blank for a folding display box comprising bottom and cover portions, said bottom portion having end and side sections defined by score lines, flaps on the side section for securing the sides and ends in box forming position, said cover portion having an end section and triangular side sections defined by score lines, the large ends of the triangular sections being disposed adjacent the cover end section and having flaps formed thereon, the end of the cover adjacent the points of the triangular sections being connected to one end section of the bottom portion, a score line joining the points of said triangular sections, and ascore line on said end section of the bottom portion, vthe distance from said last named score line to the body portion being not greater than the distance to the score line joiningsaid points. a p

24. As an article of manufacture, a blank for a folding box comprising a single sheet of material having formed thereon in longitudinal sequence'an end section, a vbottom section, a second end section, a top section, and a top end section; side sections adjoining said bottom section and having flap sections, triangular sections adjoining said top section and having end flaps, score lines defining said sections and providing flexible joints for folding said-blank, there being a score line across said blank at the points of the triangular sections, vand at least one score line on said second named end section.
