FOLDING BOX.

Be it known that we, VILLIAM. Grnson and SAMUnL-GAzzoLo, citizens of the United States, and residents of Joliet, in the county of Will and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, and 'to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form-a part of this specification.
, This invention relates to improvements in folding boxes and refers more particularly to the means for closing the box at almonds and for locking the interfolding parts of the end walls together.
The type of box hereinshowi'rto whichour improvements are applied is made from a single or integral blank of paper board, fiber, or the like, and the parts thereof which constitute the end walls of thebox are uncut 'foldable parts, whereby the juncture between the side and end walls of the'box, 25 when the parts of theendwalls are foldedin place, are characterizedjby overlapping layers which avoid the presence of openingstat said corners. Therefore, if the box be made of water or grease-proof paperboard, liquid or oleaginous contents poured into the box while warm andallowed to congeal may be shipped in the package as a container without danger of the contents leaking therefrom.
One of the purposes of the invention is to produce a box of this character in which the printing matter to be applied on the box may be printed wholly on one face of the sheet or blank, and the laps of the blank are so ar ranged and are folded in such a way that when the box is set up all the printing appears on the outer faces of the box walls. This avoids the necessity of printing on both sides of the blank, which is necessary in some box constructions by reason of the manner in which the laps are folded to produce the closed box.
Another objectof the invention is to provide an improved manner of interfolding the laps and locking them for producing the end walls of the box.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts shown in the drawings and described in the specification, and is pointed out in the appended claims.

prises four main sections 10, 11, 12, :13, which, in the set up box, constitute thesides, the bottom and top walls of said box. The
top wall section 13 is provided with'a marginal flap section 14: that, in the set up box,
which they are folded. The said section 13 is hinged along its fold; line 18 .toiconstitute a swinging top wall orcover.
The sections 10, 1:1,and 12, ,are,-respectively, provided with end flaps 19, 20, 21, which said flaps, in the form of box shown, are rectangular. Said end flaps are joined to their respective sections 10, 11, and 12 along score lines 22, 23, 24. The flaps 19 and 21 are provided with diagonal score lnes 25, 26, respectively, which divide said flaps into triangular members 27, 28, and 29, 30, respectively.
Extending outwardly from the flaps 19 are rectangular extension flaps 31, which are joined to the sections 19 along score lines 32. Said extension flaps are provided with terminal tongue flaps 33, joined to the extension flaps along the score or fold lines 3 1-. These tongue flaps are preferably scored between their sides at 35 to facilitate folding. Attention is directed to Figures 2, 3, and 4 to explain the manner in which the several end flaps 19, 20, 21, and 31 are interfolded to produce the end walls of the box. The sections 10, 11, 12, and 13 are, as shown in As shown in the drawings, the blank corn- Figures 2 and 4, folded to produce the rectangular body of the box, open. at its ends.
The flaps 19, 20, and 21 at each'end, and also 1 the extension flaps 31 project endwise outwardly from the side and bottom walls which bear them, and in the planes of said walls, when the body sections are first folded upwardly, as indicated in Figure 2.
To produce the end walls from said flaps, the central end Wall flaps 20 are first folded upwardly to the positions shown in Figure 3. In thus folding said end wall flaps upwardly the triangular members 27 and 28 of flaps 19 and triangular members 29 and 30 of flaps 21 are folded fiat together along their respective diagonal score lines 25 and 26, first in the position indicated by the flaps 21 in Figure 3, said members of the flaps swinging laterally outwardly from the side walls of the box which bear said flaps about the score lines 22 and 24L.
Thereafter the triangular folded flaps 19 are folded fiat against the upfolded central flaps 20, and the other triangular folded flaps 21 are folded flat over the flaps 19.
Then the flaps 19 are folded against the flaps 20-the-extension flaps 31 are carried into the plane of the top or swinging wall section 13, as indicated in Figure 4. To locl:
the end wall flaps together, said extension flaps 31 are folded down over the overlapping flaps 19 and 21, and the terminal tongues are inserted upwardly into the recesses or pockets formed between said overr lying flaps 19 and 21 on the one hand and the flaps 20 on the other hand, as indicated in Figure 5.
It will be noted that the outer face of the extension flaps, as found in the blank, face outwardlywhen said flaps 31 are formed in the end walls of the box so that said outer faces of the flaps may be printed in the blanks simultaneously with the outer faces of the bottom, top and side walls.
We claim as our invention:
1. The combination with the bottom and side walls of a side opening paper box, of end wall flaps joined to each other and to said walls along scored'lines, two of the non adjacent flaps being diagonally scored to permit the sections thereof to be folded flat upon each other, to produce triangular flaps, said triangular flaps being laterally foldable across the box ends flat on the intermediate ends flaps, one member of the triangular flaps being provided with a lateral extension flap which is adapted to be folded down over the triangular flaps, said extension flaps being provided with terminal locking tongues which enter locking spaces between the triangular and intermediate flaps of the end wall.
2. In a side opening paperboard box, bottom, top, and side walls, the bottom and side walls being formed with end flaps, the bottom wall flap being folded upwardly towards the ends of the side walls and the side wall flaps being diagonally folded to provide triangular flaps that are folded laterally across the box ends adjacent the upstanding bottom wall flaps to constitute the end walls, one member of one triangular flap being provided with a terminal locking tongue to enter a space between the overlying folded flaps, with the parts so arranged that the outer face of said tongue, when in the blank, is on the same side of the blank as the outer faces of the wall sections.
