3 Claims. (01. 22931) This invention relates to improvements in cartons.
The main objects of this invention are:
First; to provide a carton well adapted for the dispensing of foods which when set up quite effectively encloses or. seals the same without the necessity of employing adhesives. r
Second, to provide a carton having this advantage which may be readily set up and when set up is very strong and rigid. 7
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which may be formed of an integral blank with littlewaste material.
" Further objects pertaining to details and econ omies of the invention will definitely appear from end flaps open showing the relation of the parts which it overlies and which are engaged thereby.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the body of the carton erected, the cover being open.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating certain of the steps in erecting the carton.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. 1 further illustrating the relation of parts.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the structure illustrated in Figs. 1-5 is formed.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form .or embodiment of my invention with thecover proper open.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1-6, inclusive, comprises a bottom I, front wall 2, rear wall 3, and end walls 4. These front, rear and end walls are hingedly connected to the bottom, the hinging means being indicated at 5 and 6 and being formed by scoring as is common practice in collapsible cartons.
The end walls and the front and rear walls are connected by corner members I which are hinged- 1y connected to the end and front and rear walls by means of the scores 8. The corner members are diagonally scored at 9 to permit their being collapsed or folded when the walls are erected and also so that when collapsed they may be folded against the outer sides of the end walls. One pair of diagonally opposed corner members I have slots l extending from the outer edges thereof, that is, there are two slots l0 disposed one on each triangular portion of the corner members so that when the corner members are collapsed the slots register as shown in Fig. 4. The other diagonally opposed pair has angular slits ll therein which extend across the folding scores 9 so that when the corner members are collapsed downwardly opening slots or slits are provided for interlocking engagement with the slotted parts of the other diagonally opposed pair, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3.-
When thus engaged the box or carton is held in erected position and the end walls are held from collapsing inwardly, The cover l2 is hingedly connected to the upper edge of the rear wall by the score l3, the cover being provided at itsfront edge with a front closure member M which is hingedly connected to the cover l2 at l5. This closure member is provided with end closure flaps l6 conformed to provide tongues I! which project downwardly when the closure flaps l6 are lapped upon the erected corner members as shown in Fig, 2. The cover is also provided with end closure flaps I8 conformed to provide laterally projecting tongues l 9 which may be tucked or engaged beneath the lower edges of the corner members as shown in Fig. 1. When thus arranged the end flaps of the cover overlie or overlap the end closure flaps I6 of the front closure member I 4 and one pair of the tongues of the end closures l 8 engage the tongues I! and then extend through the open-ended slots formed in the flaps I6 by the tongues ll, to beneath the corner members 1, so that the cover is not only securely retained in closed position, but an effective sealing of the carton results.
The closed carton is very rigid and is capable of withstanding severe usage such as frequently results in merchandising goods where deliveries are made by persons wh through haste or carelessness subject even fragile articles to rough handling. The cartons may be shipped or stored in the knockdown or flat as shown in Fig. 6 and are easily and quickly set up.
The body portion of the carton when set up remains in erected position, that is, the contents are not required to hold the walls in erected position as is the case with certain cartons now in use. After filling the carton may be quickly and securely closed. Although the cover and closure members are effectively retained, the carton may be easily opened.
In the modification or embodiment of my invention shown in Fig. 7 the front closure flap 2!! is hingedly connected to the upper edge of the front wall at 2|. This front closure flap is provided with end flaps 22 which overlie the erected corner members. The cover overlaps this closure flap and its end members, and they are securely retained by the end closure flaps [8 of the cover when such flaps are engaged or in fully erected position.
I have illustrated and described my invention in embodiments which I have found highly satisfactory. I have-(not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other embodiments or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed the disclosure made will enable the embodiment of my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettei-s Pa-tent is:
