Application September 7, 1949, Serial No. 114,366
4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in display boxes in which merchandise may be packed forshipping or storage and the box easily adjusted for effectively displaying the contents.
An important object of the invention is to provide a display box including a tiered rack or shelf for the articles contained therein and which is formed with the box from a single blank and collapsed in the box under the articles and capable of being raised to lift and support the articles in a display position without the necessity of handling the articles.
Another object is to provide a novel collapsible tiered rack or shelf embodying a braced construction with locking means holding the rack rigidly in its raised position.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable inoperation, strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully'hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the'blank from which the box is formed.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the blank partly folded.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the box with the rack or shelf collapsed in shipping or storing position.
Figure 4 is a perspective View showing the rack or shelf raised into its display position.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 66 of Figure 5.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates generally a blank sheet of cardboard or similar material used in the manufacture of boxes, the blank including a main body portion 6 of square shape forming the bottom of the box and provided at each side with wall panels I, 8, 9 and In foldable along inner fold lines H at the margin of the body 6 to form upstanding walls for the box.
Rear wall panel 1 is provided with an intermediate longitudinal slot l5 and with fold lines it at the ends of the slot to the adjacent edges of the rear panel to form an inwardly foldable panel H.
A foldable rack or shelf [8 is united with front wall panel 9 along a fold line IQ for folding inwardly of the box, rack or shelf 18 being of rectangular shape and foldable along transverse parallel fold lines 26, 2|, 22 and 23 parallel to fold line 9 to form foldable panels 24, 25, 29, 21 and 23, the latter being at the outer end of the rack. A foldable pull tab 29 is formed at the outer central edge of anel 28.
The side edges of panel 21 are formed with stop shoulders 30 and inwardly of the shoulders at the side edges of panel 21 are foldable triangular shaped braces 3|. Similar braces 32 are formed at the side edges of panel 25.
In the operation of the device, side wall panels l, 8, 9 and ID are folded upwardly on fold lines I l and panels I3 are also folded downwardly and inwardly on fold lines l2 to form double side walls between which locking tongues H! are inserted to lock the side walls in upstanding position.
Foldable rack or shelf I8 is folded downwardly along fold line ill to place panel 24 against the inside of front wall panel 9,1panel 2S folded under panel 25, and folded panels 25 and 26 folded down on top of panel 21 to position the latter flatly in the box on top of central bottom portion 6, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 5.
The box may then be packed with articles of suitable size and shape for shipping or storing.
To display the articles, pull tab 29 is pulled upwardly until panel 28 has passed through slot l5, and then outwardly until stop shoulders 30 engage panel 1 at the ends of the slot, the outward movement of panels 28 and 21 opening panels 26, 25 and 24 into a tiered rack or shelf position, as shown by full lines in Figure 5, to thus support the articles in a display position.
Panel I! is also raised, as shown in Figure 5, and the exposed surfaces of panels ll, 21 and 28 may carry suitable advertising matter.
Triangular braces 3| and 32 prevent collapsing 3 of the rack formed by panels 24, 25, 26 and 21 by the weight of merchandise displayed on panels 25 and 21, and are swung outwardly to clear panels 24 and 26 and rest against inwardly folded panels I3, to permit the rack to collapse, as shown in Figure 3.
If desired panel I1 may be removed by tearing along the fold or score lines 15, after the rack has been raised into its display position.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A display box comprising a container portion and a display rack portion united at one edge of the container portion and including tiered shelves foldable in the container portion, said rack having a free end, and a slotted guide panel at an edge of the container portion opposite from the united edge of the rack slidably receiving the free end of the rack and foldable into the container portion when not in use.
2.--A. display box comprising a container portionand a display rack portion united at one edge of the container portion and including tiered shelves foldable in the container portion, said rack having a free end, and slotted guide means at an edge of the container portion opposite from the united edge of the rack slidably receiving thefree end of the rack to support the free end of the rackin an outwardly projecting upwardly inclined position when the rack is open, and foldable into the container portion when not in use.
3.. A display box comprising a container portion and a display rack portion including tiered shelves foldable in the container portion, said rack having a free end, and a slotted guide panel at an edge of the container portion receiving the free end of the rack to support the free end of the rack in an outwardly projecting upwardly inclined position when the rack is open, and triangular braces on said rack portion foldable in between said shelves to brace the same.
4. A display box comprising a container portion and a display rack portion united at one edge of the container portion and including tiered shelves foldable in the container portion, said rack having a free end, and said container having a guide slot at an edge opposite from the united edge of the rack slidably receiving the free end of the rack, a stop on the rack engaging a part of the container adjacent the slot to limit outward movement of the rack, an advertising display panel at the outer free end of the rack, and foldable braces at the side edge of the rack engaging the shelves thereof to hold the rack in open position.
