DISPLAY CARD AND TRAY UNIT Filed June 4, 1949 BY y AV Fatented Mar. 10, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPLAY CARD AND TRAY UNIT Irving Bekofl, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application June 4, 1949, Serial No. 97,106

1 Claim.

This invention relates to a combination advertising card and merchandise display receptacle and particularly to one of the folding variety.

It is well known that difiiculty is encountered by merchandising firms in having store keepers properly display their wares. The store owner is not inclined to effectively display goods that require manipulation of the parts of a container to set up the stock in view so that the maximum sales appeal thereof is obtained.

In order to overcome this fault and to make it extremely simple for the shop keeper to effectively display his items I have provided, in connection with a foldable display card and tray combination, simple means whereby the receptacle may be opened and set up on a counter and by the simple act of opening cause the display to be completed and ready for use without the necessity of manipulation of the parts of the container on the part of the person preparing the merchandise for sale.

A particular object of the invention therefor, is to provide a simplified support means for the display card backing of a receptacle, so that the backing member can be rigidly held in open or vertical position to advertise the contents of the tray of which it forms a part.

A further object of the invention is to provide in a single blank, the means for supporting the wares in display form, supporting the card portion in open advertising position and locking the card portion in open erect position so that in handling the receptacle or moving it about will not cause folding of the card section.

A still further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character referred to, combined gusset and brace members which coact to bring the card to effective display position and prevent accidental release thereof from such position, and to form said members in the same blank in such cooperative relationship that a simple folding action in forming the blank into receptacle form will suffice to operatively associate the said members.

With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain constructions hereinafter described and then particularly pointed out in the claims and a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the foldable display card and tray combination fully open and in use with the corner gussets held distended by the brace means;

Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one corner of the device showing the folding of the gusset when the brace has been swung to non-supporting position, and

Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view showing the die cut sections that combine to make up the article holding means of the tray and the corner gussets and brace sections.

Referring to the drawing in detail l0 indicates a foldable display card and tray combination which is cut from a single blank of cardboard or other suitable material and when folded along its score lines in the Well known'manner is arranged to fit into a box II, the cover of which is not shown. While only one side portion of the blank is shown as in Figure 3, it is evident that the opposite side edge will be shaped in like manner and that the device may be as wide as desired and die cut to provide supporting means for any articles desired instead of the pipes illustrated by way of example.

The blank II] is shaped to provide a display card section l2 formed integrally with a tray section [3 and scored as at [4 and [5 to delineate lateral and longitudinal folds, respectively. The side and top edges of the display card may be ornamentally shaped as at I6, if desired as may also the outer edges of the gussets ll each of which is defined by the scores l4 and I5, the former including an offset 18 outlining a tab 19 integral with the gusset. The latter is obliquely scored as at 20 to provide a folding effect for the gusset.

The blank is also shaped to present the end wall sections 2|, 22, 23, 24, 25 and the side wall sections 26 and 21. The sections 2| and 25 have interlocking tabs 28 and 29 respectively while the sections 22 and 24 have interlocking tabs 3i and 3| respectively so that, when the parts are folded on the score lines I4, 32 and 33 and shape the tray by reason of the die cut separations 34 thereof, the folded blank will provide a tray that fits snugly into the box II. The bottom or tray section I3 is die cut in suitable shape as at 35 and fold scored as at 36 to constitute article supporting means in the tray.

When section 2| is connected to section 25, the brace portions 31 which have been cut to present an oblique edge 38 and scored as at 39 to provide a fold in juxtaposition to that portion of the fold l'5 that bounds the lower edge of the gusset ll, each lie alongside the gusset. The tab l9, when the gusset is folded on score I l, leaves an opening 40 into which .a tongue 4|, formed in the out side 34 of the brace, fits to hold the brace securely in gusset supporting position. The latter must fold on score 20 to permit the card section [2 to fold down flat to provide a closure for the tray and hence the brace which is rigid locks into position against the gusset and prevents the latter from folding. The card is thus held firmly in display or open position. The score 39 slopes down rearwardly to allow for complete and unimpeded folding of the gusset inwardly when the tray is to be closed for storing or shipping. The gusset and the brace are substantially of like shape and area and ecact to support the card l2 in display position.

It is evident that, when the storekeeper receives the merchandise in my combination foldable display card and tray, he simply raises the card [2 to vertical position which opens the gussets and then with a slight pressure of each thumb swings the brace sections up into place against the gussets which causes the tabs 4| to engage the openings 40 and the work of setting up the whole display is complete.

While I have described what I consider to be a highly desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that changes in form could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I therefore, do not limit myself to the exact form herein shown and described, nor to anything less than the whole of my invention as hereinbefore set forth and as hereinafter claimed.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letter Patent, is:

A receptacle including display card and object holding tray portions respectively; a side wall connecting the card with the tray, an end wall having inner and outer plies forming with said side wall a corner of the receptacle, said outer ply being integral with the said side wall at said corner, a triangular gusset integrally hinged along fold lines with the upper edge of said outer ply and the outer edge of said display card at said corner, said inner ply, adjacent. said corner, hav ng a triangular brace ilap integrally hinged at one edge only to the upper edge thereof, along a fold line, cooperating means on the free edge of said brace flap and the fold line of said gusset and display card for locking said brace flap into operative face contacting relation with said gusset whereby the display card is locked in upright position.

IRVING BEKOFF.
