01' LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK, CORPORATION OF NEW YORK PACKING- AND DISPLAY CONTAINER Application filed April 30,

The present invention has relation to paper boxes employed for packing and displaying merchandise andone object of the invention is the further improvement of the box structure forming the subject matter of co-pending applications Serial os. 587, 45s and 595,696.

The box structure covered in said previous lar position relatively to the other section which rests on a fixed base and forms conjunctively with added means a support for the other section. For convenience .these sections are hereinafter referred to as the front and rear section in which positions they are in when arranged in position for displaying. Said added means comprises an easel or support arranged so that in the closed position the easel lies snugly against the box but in the open position said easel stands out and forms an efiicient and rigid support for the rear box section.

With the constructions previously designed the box sections in one form are united together by integral connecting means and the t'wo'lnseparab-le sections are composed of a single blank. In another form the separable sections are made of separate blanks and said sections are united by detachable means. Furthermore with the-previous constructions in one form the easel or support is automatic in operation, that is it is self-placed into the operative position when the box is o ened for display.

According to the present invention the improvedconstruction belongsto a type of box made of separable sections. The in-\ vention pertains more particularly to various novel features which render this type of box more perfect and simple in operation and further, the improvements facilitate the 1932. Serial No. 608,421.

manufacturev and setting up of the box. Some of the .improvements disclosed hereinafter may however be applied to the boxespreviously proposed or to the other boxes to which the improvements are applicable.

The salient features, together with details of construction forming the subject of the present invention will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved box in its open or display position;

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the improved box in the closed poistion;

Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the improved box in its open position looking at the same from the back thereof;

Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure '1;

Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view of which the top or rear section is composed;

and

Figure 7 is a top plan view showing the blank of which the other or bottom section of the box is composed.

In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated by the drawings referred to the improved box is composed of two containing sections A and B which are constructed respectively of separate blanks A and B. These blanks are illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings and in both instances these blanks are divided into sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 which when folded or set up form the bottom, side and end walls of, the body A or B. Both blanks A and B have extending from the sections 2 and 4 flap 6 having the free ends creased to form folding strips 7. The sections 3-5 also have extending therefrom tongues 8 which are arranged to fold inwardly when the box body is set up.

In the operation of setting up the box the" extension flaps 6 are folded inwardly over said tongues 8 and the strips 7 operate as frictional means to retain the box in its set up position.

The blank A which forms the rear or upper containing section A carries the extension 9 which provides a cover for that section. Thiscover member 9 is hinged on the score line 10 and has the cut out portion 11 which is brought into an operative position when the cover member 9 is folded on the crease line 12. The end of the cover portion 9 carries the tuck-in flap 13 and this flap is cut out to provide a tongue 14: which is engaged in slot 15 cut out on the folding or hinged line 10. By this means the folded cover portion 9 is given stability and further to brace and maintain said cover in its folded or displayed position the cut out tongue 15 is provided. This tongue has an enlarged end 16 which is engaged in the notch 16 when in the operative position wherein this device operates to retain the display cover member in a rigid determinable angular position.

The section 5 provides the rear wall of the box section A and the section 3 forms the front wall. This section 3 has a double folding extension 17 extending therefrom and hinged on the score line 18. This extension 17 and the intermediate portion 17 thereof provide means for uniting the box sections A and B together in a manner so as to permit a hinged movement on the line 18.

The blank B forming the front or lower box section B as previously stated, is similar to the blank A in so far as the body forming sections are. concerned, only the connecting section 1717 and the cover portion 9 are omitted. 1 Furthermore in blank B the section 5 has an extension 19 having folding ends or tongues 20 which are employed instead of tongues 8. In this blank the section 5 has extending therefrom portions or tongues 21 having double folding hooked ends 22. These tongues or portions operate as additional connecting means between the two box sections A and B and also as an easel or support for the rear box section A.

The container bodies employed with the improved box may be of any suitable kind but preferably to facilitate hand assembling a conventional form is employed wherein the bodies are formed by the blanks as shown and described.

lln the operation of setting up the box bodies the blanks are folded as required and then the two sections A and B are corners of the rear box sections so that the said tongues 21 will lie between the folded sections 2 and 6 and the hooked ends 22 protrude through the slots 23 when the box is in its open or display position. When the box is closed the tongues 21 lie in a position so that they will pass through the slots 23 when the rear section is opened or thrown back into its display position and when in this position, the ends 22 of said tongues neiaaeo 21 are folded inwardly where they may conveniently serve as price tabs besides providing additional means to retain the sections together. lln the closed position of the box the major part of the'tongues 21 lie at the back of the box where at one end they are held in place by a portion of the tab inserted into the open corner of the box and the opposite corners are engaged preferably in slots' 24 so as to hold the tongues closely against the box.

As stated the ends 22 of the tongues 21 remain permanently inserted and therefore no manipulation of the tongues are required to cause them to .assume the position wherein they operate as supports for the rear box section. These tongues or members 21 are integral extensions from the back of the front section and in the setting up of the box for display said members 21 automatically assume the operative position.

In the closed position of the box, the cover lies over the contents of the box section 1 and to retain the cover in place the flap 13 is tucked into the front end of the box. The cover in this position insures that shipping package an outer sleeve may be employed or preferably as shown the two sections are tied together-by a string 25.

Modifications may be made in carrying out the details of the invention hereinbefore described and it is to be understood that any modification coming fairly within the terms of the appended claims shall be covered thereby.
