Y Z' @Him/man Patented Aug. 6, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAsTEBoARD Box 'Russell Chally,1 Morris, Ill. 4 Application December 27, l1937, Serial N0.l181,876y i comme. (C1. 229-31) 'I'he primary object of'this invention resides in the provision of a pasteboard box of such construction that certain `operations usually practiced in manufacturing boxes of this character are obviated so as to increase output thereof with the minimum amount-of labor.
A further object of this invention' relates to a box formed of pasteboard or the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a box that can be manufactured very cheaply, so that it canbe sold at small cost and one'which can be shipped or stored in `flat knocked-down condition and set up in the minimum length of time for use.
A further object of the invention is to make the box either with a separate closure or one that is formed with the box.
This invention also consists in certain other` f spending parts throughout the several views,
and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the box and closure.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View approximately on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional viewapproximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a Sectional View through a corner portion of the box.
Fig. 5 is a view of the box and its closure in flat or knocked-down condition.
Fig. 6 is a detail View showing a folded corner of the box.
Fig. 7 is a view `of a blank for forming either a box or its closure, where the box is separate` from the closure.
Fig. 8 is a transverse section through the box and closure in separated condition.
In these drawings, the box is shown at A and the lid or vclosure at B, and in that form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 6, the -box and lid are formed from a single piece of suitable material. In these views, the box includes the bottom I, the sides 2 and the ends 3, the ends and sides being separated from the bottom by the lines 4, which lines form the small `corner pieces 5 that are located between the extremities of the end and side parts. Each corner piece has a sco'redor fold line B passing diagonally therethrough. Aap 'I is formed on the outer end 3 and is separated therefrom by a line 3 and' this flap has a dove-tail shaped extension 9 on an intermediate part of its outer edge. The center 5 part of the'flap is also cut to form a tongue I0 which is of'substant'ially T shape.
The closure or lid B is composed of the top I I, which has one side edge provided with a score or fold line I2 between the inner end part l0 of the box and closure, and said lid also includes the sides I3, which are separated from the adjacent corner parts of the box by slits I4. 'Ihe lid also includes the one end I5, formed by the line I6 and the corner parts I1 formed by the lines 15 I8, which separate the ends from the top, and the line I6. These corner parts also have diagonal lines I9 therein and the end I5 has the ap 20 separated therefrom by the line 2| and said flap has an extension of dove-tail congura- 20 tion thereon as shown at 22.
The top adjacent the end I5, has the two substantially U-shaped slits 23 therein for receiving the ends of the tongue Ill when the lid l is to be fastened to the box as shown in Fig. 1. 25
In manufacturing the box constructed as aforesaid for shipment to the trade in knockeddown condition the flaps I and 20 are folded upon the ends 3 and I5 respectively and retained in such position by glueing the extensions 9 and 30 22 together with the medial portions of the aforesaid aps to their associated ends whereupon those portionsof the aps extending in opposite directions from the medial glued and reinforced areas form pockets for the reception of the folded corners 5 and I1 when the box and closure are set up for use.
Upon setting the box and closure up for use the sides thereof are folded on the score lines 4 and I8 respectively at which time the corners 40 5 and I1 are folded upon themselves and tucked under the unglued portions of the flaps 'I and 20 and, through the instrumentality of the medial glued areas of the ends, the corners will not become dislodged without reversing the setting up operation.
In order tofasten the lid in closed position on the box, it is swung over into the box and the ends of the tongue II) seated` in the slits 23, as shown in Figs?. 1, 2 and 3. f 50 In the modiiication shown in Figs'. '7 and 8, both the box and the detached lid, are formed from similar blanks, one of which is shown at A' in Fig. 7. vAs shown in this View, the blank includes the main part 25, the sides 26 and the ends 05 21 and the corner parts 28 at the intersections of the sides and ends. All of these parts have score or fold lines defining them, as heretofore set forth. However, in this form of the invention the flaps 29 are formed with small dove-tail shaped extensions 30 at its center which together with the medial portions of the iiaps are glued to the end part to form pockets on opposite sides thereof, as sho-Wn in Fig. 8, the setting-up operation being similar to the first form of the invention, excepting the box and lid are separate. Fig. 8 shows how the lid is disposed over the box before placing the two parts together.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a simple form o f box structure and one that can be manufactured to sell at low cost and one that can be quickly and easily set up.
It is thought from the foregoing description that ythe advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It isatobe understood that changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.;
Having thus described my invention whatI claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. Ai box element yhaving an end Wall and side Walls andcorner portions formed integral with adjoining ends ofthe side and end walls, said end wall being of increased width and projecting'outw'ardly beyondthe sidewalls and midway its length having an outwardly projecting tongue spaced fromends of the end wall a distance appreciably greater than the width of the corner portions, the end wall being folded inwardly along a line flush with edges of Said corner portions to dispose the outer side edge of said tongue even with the inner margin of the end wall, said tongue being xedly secured against the inner face of the end Wall in face to face engagement therewith and the inwardly folded portions of the end wall between the tongue and ends of the wall being free to provide elongated fiaps spaced from the inneredge of the end wall and of appreciably greater length than the width of the corner portions, said corner portions being folded inwardly along diagonally extending lines against end portions of the end wall and tucked under the flaps to removably secure the folded corner portions and hold the side and end walls in a set upy position.
2. A folding box section comprising a bottom Wall, side and end walls formed on the bottom Wall, foldable corner flaps connecting the side and end Walls together,` a locking flapI formed on an end wall and extending the full length thereof and being ofsubstantially one half the width of said end wall, said flap being foldable over the inner face of the end wall, a fastening extension formed on the central part of the locking iiap and extending a substantial distance beyond the middle of the end wall, an adhesive securing the extension only to the innerface' of the end wall, and-the length of the portions'of said locking flap on each side of said extension being substantially greater than the overall width of said corner iiap. l v
