OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PASTEBOARD SHIPPING AND DISPENSING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
Application filed May 8, 1912. Serial No. 695,944.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH R. RICHARDSON,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pasteboard Ship ing and Dispensing Boxes, of which the fol owing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to pasteboard boxes 3, and seeks to provide a box of simple, strong construction which can be economically manufactured and which can be conveniently employed for packing, shi ping and dispensing crackers and like 0 s.
The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a lan view illustrating the box in collapsed orm. Fig. 2 is a cross-section extending from front to rear of the box, showing the rear flaps and upper front section opened. Fig. 3 1s a perspective view of the completed box with the rear flaps and upper front section closed.
The box is preferably colla sible so that it may be shlpped in flat, ocked-down form, is preferably formed of a single blank of heavy pasteboard, and comprises a. top wall a, a bottom wall Z) and side walls a. I These walls are integral with one another, the pasteboard being scored along arallel lines 1 to form hin ed connections etween the top, bottom an side walls and permit the collapsin of the box. In the form shown, one 0% the side walls 0 is rovided with an integral hinged flap 2 which abuts against the under face of the top wall a and is secured thereto, preferably by staples 3. The top and bottom walls are rovided at their rear edges with integral aps 4 and the side walls with integral fla s 5, the pasteboard blank from which the ox is formed being scored along lines 6 to form hinged connections between the flaps 4 and 5 and the walls of the box. These flaps may be folded after the box is filled and connected in any suitable manner to form a closure for the rear face of the box.
The front of the box comprises u per and lower hinged sections d and e. Tliese sections are preferably integral with one another, the asteboard bein scored along a horizontal line 7 to form a inge connection between the same. In the preferred form of the invention, the lower front section d is integral with the bottom wall 6 of the box, the pasteboard being scored upon a line 8 to form a hinge connection between the front edge of the bottom I) and the lower edge of the front section d.
lVhen the box is in use, the lower hinge section is rigidly held in vertical position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, between the lower front edge portions of the side walls 0 of the box. The lower front section is provided with side flaps f, preferably formed integral therewith and connected thereto along the scored line 8. These flaps are held in position against the sides 0 of the box and preferably, as shown, are arranged against the inner side faces of the side walls and extend inwardly to the extreme rear face of the box. At their rear ends the side flaps f are provided with means for holding the side flaps and the lower front section (2 1n position. In the form shown, these flaps are provided at their rear ends with foldable extensions 9 connected thereto by scores 10 and these extensions are provided with upwardly extending tongues 11 which are arranged to engage or interlock with slits 12 formed in the flaps 5 on the rear edges of the side walls 0.
The upper front section 6 is provided with top and side edge flanges 13 and 14: which are connected thereto along scored lines 15 and 16. The side flanges 14 are provided at their up er ends with foldable tabs 17 and the to ange 13 is provided at its ends with benda le metal fingers 18 which are stapled into the body of the flange l3 and project outwardly therefrom before the parts of the box are assembled, as shown in Fig. l.
The improved box in the preferred form shown can be shipped in collapsed or knocked-down condition, as shown in Fig. 1, with the top, bottom and side walls in contact. In setting up the box, the top, bottom and side walls are separated and the side flaps f of the lower front section are passed into the box and engage the inner faces of the side walls 0. The tongues 11 on the extensions 9 of the side flaps are enga ed with the slits 12 of the folding flaps 5 to old the side flaps and the lower front section d securely in position. The edge flanges 13 and 14 are folded upon the lines 15 and 16 into a position at right angles to the main body of the upper front section e. The tabs 17 are folded beneath the inner faces of the flange 13 and the metal fingers 18 are bent over, the tabs to connect the upper and side edge flanges 13 and 14 and hold them in the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In the preferred form shown, the top and side edge flanges 13 and 14 of the upper front section e are arranged to overlap the edges of the top wall a and side walls a, respectively, when the box is closed,
as shown in Fig. 3.
The box can be conveniently packed with the goods through the open, rear end thereof and the rear end closed by folding the flaps 4 and 5 inwardly and connecting the outer flaps 4: in any convenient manner. Theedge flanges l3 and la'of the upper front section a snugly engage the top and side walls and hold the front section 6 in position. But, in dispensing the goods, the upper front section e can be easily swung about the hinged joint 7 to open and close the front of the box without spilling the contents thereof. The lower section (5 is rigidly held in position, as described, and serves to securely support the upper hinged section 6. To display the contained goods,
the lower front section (2 is preferably provided with an opening 19 covered with a thin, transparent sheet 20. This transparent sheet is preferably formed of strong, flexible material, such as celluloid, and is pasted to the inner face of the lower front section (5.
It is to be understood that many changes may be made in the details of the preferred construction set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined in the claims. 7
I claim as my invention l. A pasteboard shipping and dispensing box comprising integral side top and bottom walls having integral folding flaps for closing the rear of the box, and a front formed of upper and lower sections, said lower front section being hinged to said bottom wall and having inwardly extending side flaps against the inner faces of said side walls, and interlocked at their rear ends with the folding flaps of said side walls,
and said upper front section being hinged to said lower section and having connected, top and side edge flaps arranged to engage said top and side walls, substantially as described.
2. A pasteboard shipping and dispensing box comprising integral walls forming four sides of said box, flaps formed integral with said walls for closing the fifth side of said box and a front section for closing the sixth side of said box, comprising upper and lower hinged sections the lower section being hinged to one of said first mentioned walls and having integral side flaps engaging the walls adjacent the wall on which said lower section is hinged, an upper section having top and side edge flaps arranged to engage the side walls adjacent thereto when 1n closed position.
3. A pasteboard shipping and dispensing box comprising integral side top and bottom walls having integral folding flaps for closing the rear of the box and a front wall formed of upper and lower sections said front section being hinged to one of said walls and having inwardly extending side flaps against the inner faces of the walls adjoining that wall to which said lower front section is hinged and interlocked at their rear ends with the folding flaps of said side walls and said upper front section being hinged to said lower section and having edge flaps integral with its periphery.
4:. A pasteboard shipping and dispensing box comprising integral side top and bottom walls having integral folding flaps for closing the rear of the box and a frontform of upper and lower sections, said lower front section being hinged and having inwardly extending side flaps against the inner faces of the side walls and interlocked at their rear ends with the folding flaps of said side walls.
