Be it known that we, WILLIAM W. Mo= CLAY and CLARENCE G. MCCLAY, citizens of the United States, residing at hicago-, the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to receptacles which are constructed of a cut and folded blank of paper, pasteboard or similar material, and its object is to provide a receptacle of this kind which is strong and durable, the blank being shaped so that a receptacle having reinforced walls is produced.

The invention has for its object to' provide a novel arrangement of end flaps for closing the receptacle, said flaps being securely locked in closing position.

In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in said drawings,

Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank before the same is folded to form the receptacle;

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one end of the receptacle, partly broken away.

In carrying out the invention there is provided a blank of pasteboard, paper or other suitable material, which is scored or creased to provide the several parts or sections which form the walls of the receptacle when the blank is folded. The blank is in the form of an elongated sheet divided by transverse scores or creases into nine sections denoted by the reference characters 1 to 9, respectively, these sections being arranged in a straight row, and being all of the same dimensions, and rectangular in shape. The section 1 is at one end of the row, and the section 9 at the other end. The section 2 which is next to the end section 1 has short end flaps 2*, one at each end. The section 3 next to the section 2 has end flaps 3, one at each end, and each of said flaps has a tongue 3 at its outer end which is triangu- The flaps 4 to 8 also have end flaps denoted, by t e refer nce cha acters i and 8 respectively. The end section 9 has at each end a flap 9 and at the outer end of the latter is a tongue 9 The flaps the other at right angles to each other on I the creases dividing the same, whereby the top, side'and end wallsof the receptacle areproduced. In view of the number of sections, these walls of the receptacle are" double, and the top wall has three thicknesses of material. The top of the: receptacle is composed of the sections 1, 5" and 9, the section 1 being on the outside, the section 9- on the inside, and the section 5 being between said inner and outer sections. Before filling the receptacle, the outer section 1 will be pasted down on the intermediate section 5. One side wall of the, receptacle is formed by the-sections 2" and 6, and the other side via'll'by the sections 4: and 8, the sections 2 and 4: being on the outside, and the sections 6 and S on the inside of the receptacle. The sections 8 and 7 form the bottom of the receptacle, the former being on the outside and the latter on the inside. The end flaps of the blank are now folded to form the end walls of the receptacle, and as the manner of folding said flaps is the same for both end. walls, a description of one suifices for both. The end flaps, after the sections 1 to 9 are folded as hereinbefore described, are projecting outward from the ends of the partly folded receptacle, the flaps 2 and 6* being on one side wall, and the flaps 4 and 8 on the other side wall, whereas the flaps 5 and 9 and the tongue 9 are at the top, and the flap 3 the tongue 3 and the flap 7 are at the bottom. The flap 9 is first folded downward to close up the end of the receptacle, which positions its tongue 9 at the bottom. The side flaps 6 and 8 are next bent inward against the outside of the downfolded flap 9*. The top flap 5 is now bent down against the outside of the folded side flaps 6 and 8 and the tongue 9 is bent upward against the outside of these flaps. The side flaps 2? and l are next bent inward against the outbent upward on the outside of the flaps 7 2 and P, which brings the tongue 3" to the top of the receptacle. This tongue 3 is now tucked in at. the top of the receptacle between the flap 5 and the tongue 9 which completes the end wall of the box, the

tongue 3 serving to lock the parts of which said wall is made up. It will be noted that the flaps produce an end wall having several thicknesses of material which are securely locked together by the tongue 3*, and by the interlocking arrangement of the other flaps, and as the other walls of the receptacle are double, a receptacle is had which is strong and durable, and which may be used for shipping various articles by parcel post, freight or express.

We claim I 1. A receptacle comprising a blank composed of a plurality of connected foldable sections sufiicient in number to form a double top, side and bottom walls of the receptacle, each section except the last one folded having an inwardly foldable flap at its ends, which flaps are foldable to form the end walls of the receptacle, the end flaps of the section which is first folded having foldable tongues at its ends between which end flaps and their tongues certain of the other end flaps are foldable and others are foldable on the outside of the tongues, the end flaps of another one of the sections having foldable tongues at their outer ends adapted to be tucked in behind the first-mentioned tongues. 7

A receptacle comprising a blank composed of a plurality of connected foldable sections sufficient in number to form a double top, side and bottom walls of the re-' ceptacle, each section except the last one folded having an inwardly foldable flap at 7 its ends, which flaps are foldable to form the end walls of the receptacle, the end flaps of;

the section which is first folded having foldable tongues at its ends between which end flaps and their tongues certain of the other the section which is first folded, and the end aps having the last-mentioned foldable V tongues conforming to the dimensions of the receptacle ends, the remaining end flaps being smaller than said receptacle ends, and the combinedarea of adjacent ones of said last-mentioned flaps conforming to the dimensions of the receptacle ends.
