ARTHUR E. BROWN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO BROWN &
BAILEY COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA,
PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed September 16, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Knockdown Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a knock-down box comprising improved means for stiffening and strengthening the construction as Well as better retaining the goods to be incased.
The characteristic features of my improvements are fully disclosed in the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blank comprised in my improvements, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same with the interior brace and container together with the side to which it is attached shown in erected position, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the erected box and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same.
The blank, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises the rectangular bottom section 1 having the rectangular side 2 hinged thereto on the score line 3, the rectangular side 4 hinged thereto on the score line 5, and the ends 6 hinged thereto on the scorelines 7, the ends having the slots 8 therein. The side 2 has ends 9 hinged thereto on lines 10, such ends being separated from the ends 6 by through cuts 11. The side 4 has ends 12 hinged thereto on score-lines 13, these ends being separated from the ends 6 by the through-cuts 14. A rectangular top section 15 is hinged to the side section 4 on the score line 16, and is provided with ends 17 hinged on the score lines 18 and separated from the sections 12 by through cuts 19, the ends 17 having the tongues 20 adapted to enter the slots 8. side section 21 is hinged to the top section 15 on the score line 22 and has end sections 23 hinged thereto on the score lines 24, these end sections being separated from the end sections 17 by the through-cuts 25.
The section 2 has a loop fixed thereto and composed of abutting side sections 26 pasted to the section 2, ends 27 hinged on the lines 28 to the sections 26 and adapted to be folded on the creased lines 29 parallel to the lines 28, and a side 30 to which the ends 27 are hinged on the score-lines 31 parallel to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1915. Serial No. 861,926.
the lines 29. This loop is thus adapted to e collapsed on the side 2 as illustrated in Fig. 1 or erected on the bottom section 1, as illustrated in Fig. 2, having an internal cross-sectional area when rected approximately that of the cross section of the plan of the box and a depth approximately equal to that of the box.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2, the inner case formed by the open loop is adapted for receiving the goods, such as a pair of shoes or other articles, which are folded Within the outer case by bringing the part 4 into contact with the part 30, the part 15 parallel with the part 1, the part 21 in contact with the part 2, the parts 9 and 12 against the parts 27, the parts 23 against the parts 9, the Darts 6 against the parts 23 and the parts 17 against the parts i with the tongues 20 inserted in the slots 8.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the foregoing construction possesses the advantage attending the use of blanks that can be packed, shipped and taken in flat form for use, while the unbroken wall formed by the erected loop affords superior means for retaining the goods as well as stiffening the box, which is adapted to be erected readily by folding and securing the parts in place as described. It will also be understood that the combination of the part 30 with the part 4 provides the construction with double sides, which is peculiarly advantageous in forming a stiff and strong box, the advantage resulting regardless of the manner in which the part 30 is held adjacent to the part 4 between the parts 1 and 15 so as to brace the same.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A knock down boxcomprising folding sections hinged on parallel longitudinal and transverse scores, in combination with a collapsible loop fixed to one of said sections and adapted to be expanded so as to stand upon an adjacent section in approximate conformity with the outline thereof, said loop serving to stiffen the erected box and to hold the contents thereof.
2. A knock down box having a rectangular bottom section, equal parallel side sections hinged thereto, one of said side sections, a continuous strip of paper having substantially the width of said side sections and its ends fixed to one of said side sections, said strip being creased and forming a loop a top section hinged to adapted to conform to section to which said loop is fixed, and end sections hinged to said top, bottom and side sections aforesaid.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this eleventh day of September,
1914:, in the presence of the subscribing wit- 1.0
nesses.
e ARTHUR E. BROWN.
