Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EARL C. POTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing or Shipping Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of folding boxes preferably. made of double faced corrugated paper board and known as packing or. shipping boxes for the packaging of goods for storage or for shipment. The object of my invention is to produce a novel and eflicient box of this character designed more particularly for the packaging of chairs andthe like.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the cut and scored blank from which the three side walls of the box are made; Fig. 2 a similar View of the fourth side wall of the box; Fig. 3 a perspective of the body of the box in set-up position; Fig. 1 a perspective of the box showing it partly set up; Fig. 5 a perspective of the bottom of the box; Fig. 6 a perspective of the box in'its complete or closed form; Fig. 7 a vertical sectional view of the box showing a chair contained therein; Fig. 8 a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7; Fig. 9. a View similar to Fig. 7 but illustrating a modified form of construction; and Fig. 10 a detail view of a portion of the box of Fig. 9.
Relating to the particular embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 8, the body of the box is madefrom the side walls shown in Figs. land 2 and the bottom shown in Fig. 5, the bottom being here shown as separate although this is not essential. As shown, the blank of Fig. 1 is cut and scored to form three side Walls hinged together including a rear wall 1 and two similar side walls 2. Each side wall is cut and scored to form a fiap3 at its upper outer corner, such flap beinghinged on the score line 3*. The fourth side wall 4, which is here separate from'the blank of Fig. 1
but which, if desired, may be made from the same blank, is of somewhat smaller size than the other side walls inasmuch as it forms the front wall of the completed box.
The body of the box is formed by folding the walls 1 and 22 to box form and then securing the front wall 4 in place in suitable manner as by means of the taping 5.
The bottom of the box, which is preferably made removable, comprises the bottom proper marked 6 and marginal flaps 7 hinged thereto and connected at their corners in suitable manner as by taping 8. This bottom is of'such size that the side walls fit within the marginal flaps 7, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6.
The box has two separate top covers, one of which comprises a top piece 8 and marginal flaps 9, three of which are downturned to form flanges fitting over the out side of the side walls 2 and front wall 1 and the other being up-turned as shown in Fig. 1. The meeting ends of the down-turned flaps 9 are connected together by taping 10. The other top comprises a top piece 11 having marginal flaps 12, the adjacent ends of these'flaps being connected in suitable manner as by taping 13.
In addition and by preference the box also comprises a strip 14 of rather unyielding or stiff material, such as wood, the same being positioned within the box on the inner side of the up-turned flap 9. This strip is adapted to brace this latter flap and also to form a means of attachment for the rope or cord 15 which passes through the strip 14, up-turned flap 9, and the two flaps 3 which in the present instance overlap.
The box, being constructed as above described, is erected and tied as follows. The side walls are folded and assembled as shown in Fig. 3 and placed over the article such as the chair A which has been placed upon thebottom of the box. The cover 8 is now placed in position with its inner flap up-turned after which the two flaps 3 are folded inwardly, one of these flaps being shown in such inward position in Fig. 4:. It will be understood that the cord 15, only a portion of which is shown in Fig. 4, is passed through both of the flaps 3. The second top cover 11 is now placed in position on the top edges of the side walls 1, 22, and the flaps 33. Thereupon the manner and the end tied, as shown in Fig. 6. The cord passes through the flaps 3 towardv their lower edges so as to bring the rope or cord adjacent to the top surface of the cover 8 after the cord has been passed around the'box and tied.
In Figs. 9 and 10 I have shown a modified form of construction which is substantially the same as that already described with the exception that the front wall and the lower top cover are made integral. AS shown, this front wall 16 is hinged to the cover 17 which is provided with an up-turned flap 18 corresponding to the up-turned flap 9. In other-respects the parts are the same as in the first described form and are therefore similarly numbered;
The boxesembodying my invention also possess the advantage of being of the knockdown or collapsible type and this applies not only to the body ofthe box but also to the covers and to the bottom, it being understood that these covers and the bottom are scored, as indicated at a on diagonal lines, so that such collapsing may take place.
I claim:
1. A packing or shipping box comprising a box body consisting of a front wall and a rear wall of difierent heights and side walls and a bottom, the two opposite side walls having flaps formed from their outer, upper corners and folding inwardly together on vertical hinge lines to form a vertical wall, thereby forming a box body having two portions of different heights, and two separate covers for said portions.

A packing or shipping box comprising a box body consisting of a front wall and a rear wall of different heights and side walls and a bottom, the two opposite side walls having inwardly foldable flaps formed from their outer, upper corners, thereby forming a box body having two portions of differ ent heights, and two separate covers for said portions, one of said covers having on its inner side an up-turned flap against which said two foldable flaps are positioned.
3. A packing or shipping box comprising a boxbody consisting of a front wall and a rear wall of different heights and side walls and a bottom, the two opposite side walls having flaps formed from their outer, upper corners and folding inwardly together on vertical hinge lines to form a vertical Wall, thereby forming a box body having two portions of different heights, two separate covers for said portions, and a stiff strip 14:
on the inside of the box adjacent the lower edges of said flaps.

6.- A packing or shipping box comprising a box body consisting of a front Wall and a rear wall of different heightsand side walls and a bottom, the two opposite side walls having inwardly foldable flaps formed from their outer, upper corners, thereby forming U a box body having two portions of difl'erent heights, two separate covers for said portions, one of said covers having on its inner side an upturned flap against which said two 'foldable flaps are positioned, a stifi strip 7 arranged on the inner side of said upturned flap; and a tying cord passing through said strip, saidtwo foldable flaps, and the upturned flap.
