This invention relates to improvements in paper boxes in general and more particularly to boxes of the dish or tray type.
The primary object of the invention resides in apaper box of then type commonly used by delicatessen and grocery stores in ther sale of loose pickles, Sauerkraut, lard, and other like foodstuffs, which is constructed of a single blank of material folded in a novel mannerk to provide a continuous bottom: and side wall structure to avoid corner joints, and thus overcome the danger of leakage of the moisture contents of the box.
Another object of the invention is to provide a folding tray box which when unfolded assumes a fiat position to enable compact stacking for shipping and storage purposes, and which may be readily folded into a set-up position when needed for use.
A. further object is the provision of a folding tray box in which the upstanding walls thereof are joined by foldable webs, which fold outwardly and flat against adjacent walls, the folded webs eing held fiat by flaps bent down from the top edges of the walls to avoid accidental unfolding of the same.
A still further object is to provide a cardboard tray box in which the corners are so constructed as to render them watertight and which construction reinforces the box to strengthen the same.
With these and other objects in View, the invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described in the following specification, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which my folding box is constructed.
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the box in setup position for use.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail horizontal sectional view through one end of the box.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective View illustrating the manner in which corner webs are folded.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of box.
Figure '7 is a perspective View of a further modication.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the letter A designates the cardboard blank of material from which my folding box is con- (Cl. 229--31l structed and which blank is of substantial rectangfular configuration in plan as seen by reference to Figure l of the drawing. The blank A is scored lengthwise on the parallel score lines I!) and Il and transversely on the lines l2 and I3, 5 the longitudinal and transverse score lines joining each other and defining a bottom wall I4. The blank beyond the longitudinal score lines l@ and II- is further scored on the lines I5-i5 tol define side walls Iii-iii' and flaps il-i'l which extend l0 the length of the side walls iii. The blank is also scored transversely beyond the score lines I2 and I3 as at i8 to define side walls ifi-I9 and flaps 2li-253. In order to distinguish the shorter side walls i-i from the longitudinal side walls l5 IE5-I6, I shall refer to the walls I9 as end walls which in actual practice when the box is in set-up position constitute side walls and coact with the walls I5 to provide a continuous side wall structure.
Connecting the adjacent ends of the side walls I6 and end walls I 9, are triangular shaped corner webs 2l, the same being formed by scoring the blank on the inwardly converging lines 22-22, the inner meeting ends of the score lines 22 termi- 25 nating at the respective corners of the bottom wall I4 whereas the outer diverging ends of the lines 22 meet the endsA of the respective fold lines I5 and I8. The webs 2i are divided into two folds by a, score line 23, the said lines 23 extending 3o from the apex portions of the triangular shaped webs to the outer free edge of the webs and which lines divide the webs into two identical outwardly foldable sections. The score lines 22 extend at an obtuse angle from the bottom fold lines I6, II, I2, 35 and I3 so that when the box is in a set-up position in a manner to be presently explained, the side walls extend upwardly and outwardly as best seen in Figure 4 of the drawing.
In order to set up the box from the blank shown 40 in Figure 1, the triangular shaped corner webs 2I are folded outwardly on the score lines Z3 while the aps Il and 2B are folded downwardly against the exterior side walls ES and I9 respectively as best illustrated in Figure 5 of the draw- 45 ing. The outward folding of the webs 2| tends. to fold the side and end walls inwardly to shape the body of the box, after which the two folds or sections of the webs 2i are folded iiat against each other and the two folds of the webs are then 50 folded iiat against one of the adjacent side walls of the body structure. The central portion of the flaps il and 2Q are adhesively secured to the respective side walls of the box as at 2li so as to leave the ends of the flaps free. The folded corner 55 webs 2i pass beneath the free ends of the flaps l1 and 2U so that the flaps overle the folded corner webs and prevent accidental unfolding of the same when the box is in a set-up position. Although I have mentioned that the flaps l1 and 20 are adhesively secured to the respective side walls, it will be understood that the same may be stitched or otherwise secured, and this fastening of the flaps to the side walls is performed by the manufacturer so that when the boxes are sold for use, it is only necessary for the user to fold the corner webs in the manner above described. In such case, the box may be folded to the flat position shown in Figure l and will appear identical to the showing in this figure with the eX- ception that the flaps I1 and 2D are folded upon the respective side walls I6 and I9. When the box is in a fiat unfolded position, the same may be compactly stacked for storage and shipping purposes, or if it is desired, the storekeeper may set up a supply of boxes and nest them one within the other for use as needed.
In Figure 6 of the drawings, the construction is substantially the same as that shown in the preceding form, with the exception that the corner folds 25 are folded over the end wall of the box body, while only the end walls are provided with holding flaps 2t, which have their opposite ends overlapping the corner flaps 25 and which ends are adhesively secured to the said corner flaps. The portions of the naps 26 intermediate the corner folds 25 are free of the adjacent side walls.
In Figure 7 of the drawing, a further modification has been shown wherein the bottom of the box body is provided with depending legs 2l struck out from the box bottom and being disposed coextensive with the side walls. Also in this modification, the ends of the holding flaps 23 are extended beyond the ends of the side walls as at 29 and adhesively secured to the longitudinal side walls. The flaps 28 of course overlie the corner folds 39 to hold the box in a set-up position. In the form of boxes shown in Figures 6 and 7, it is necessary to nest them one within the other as they cannot be folded fiat as in the preferred form without breaking the adhesive bond which secures the holding flaps to the side walls of the box body.
The form of the box shown in Figure 7 will be found useful for the packing of berries wherein ventilation within the box from beneath is desirable.
While I have shown and described what I deem to be the most practical embodiments of my invention, I wish it to be understood that such changes as come within the scope of the appended claim, may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:-
A box constructed entirely from a single blank of cardboard comprising a tray-like body of rectangular configuration having a bottom wall, upstanding opposed end walls, and upstanding opposed side Walls, down-turned flaps integral with and extending the width of the opposed end walls and disposed exteriorly of said end walls, triangular shaped corner webs integral with adjacent side and end walls, eachV of said corner webs being folded outwardly upon itself and thence inwardly flat against the outside of said.
