Description

0 e W. WRIGHT, Jr:
GOLLAPSIBLE CARTON. No. 371,159. Patented Oct. 4, 1887.
446M BY a ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM. \VRIGHT, JR, OF NE YORK, N. Y.
COLLAPSlBLE CARTON.
SPECIPICATIGN forming part. of Letters Patent No. 371,159, dated October 4, 1887. Application filed January 14. 1887. Serial No. 224,370. (Model To CLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WRIGHT, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New ,York, have invented a new and Improved Collapsible Carton, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a carton or small paper box designed more par ticularly to be made in imitation of boxes in which medicines small bottled groceries, and other goods are packed and shipped, so that these cartons, when set up and exposed in any business place, will present the appearance of a large stock of goods on hand.
The invention consists of a collapsible carton or box having removable and collapsible end pieces and a knockdown frame placed upon the inside to hold the carton or box firmly in distended or setup position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a broken perspective View of the carton or box when set up for use. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view of the same col lapsed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the covers or end pieces collapsed, and Fig. 4. is a plan view of one of the frame-pieces to be placed inside the carton when set up for use.
A represents the body of the carton, made in this instance cubical in form and open at the ends, and is formed ol'the four side walls, a, of pasteboard. These are scored at the 5 cornersb and united in the same manner that common pasteboard boxes are scored and are united, so that the body A may be collapsed, as shown in Fig. 2, or distended, as shown in Fig. 1. XVhen distended, the carton is braced from the inside and held in that position by a frame, B, composed of the two boards a c,
each slotted at one end onehalf its length, as shown at 0, so that the two boards may be put together to form aster-frame of a size to fit the interior of the carton, as shown clearly in Fig. l. The frame Bhaving been inserted in the carton the ends thereof will be closed by the end pieces, 0 C. These are scored at d and cut out .at the corners to form the flanges h, which may be straightened out to the same plane with the body of the end piece or turned to stand at right angles thereto to enter the ends of. the body A, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. \Vhen so applied to the ends of the body A, the end pieces may be fastened to the ends of the framcB by small tacks e, driven through the end pieces into the frame, as shown in Fig. 1.
By forming the body A and the end pieces, C,in the manner described they may be packed and shipped flat, and by makingthe frame B of two slotted parts they may also be packed I and shipped flat and the whole may be easily set up and covered with labels to imitate any cases or packages in which medicines and other goods are packed and shipped.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new and improved article of manufac ture, the collapsible carton herein shown and described, comprising the body A, made of pasteboard and constructed to be folded at the joints 1) at the corners and open at both ends, the end pieces, O, formed with flaps h, adapted to fold at d, and the interior removable bracing-frame,l3,composed of the strips c,of wood, matched together in the center, the four edges of the frame coming in contact with the inner surfaces of the walls of the body A, substuntially as and for the purposes described.
