Application filed December 10, 1909.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WAHL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved packing-box of that type whichis made of pasteboard and interior reinforcing strips, and in which the body of the box is made of a single blank that can be folded and locked so as to form a box-body or unfolded into flat shape when it is desired to return the box in flat or knockdown condition.
The boxes are mainly designed for the shipment of ladies and gentlemens wearing apparel of all kinds.
The invention consists of a packing-box comprising a box-body provided with deta'chable side walls made of pasteboard, locking devices for connecting the end-walls with the side-walls, and reinforcing frames composed of wooden longitudinal and transverse connecting strips for the side and endwalls and bottom of the box.
The invention consists further in the dovetailed connection of the reinforcing frames of the end and side-walls of the boxbody, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the body of a packing-box constructed according to my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan-view of the same, Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a vertical longitudinal section and a vertical transverse section on lines 3, 3 and 4, 4, Fig. 2, drawn on a larger scale, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view, drawn on a larger scale,
. showing the connection of the wooden reinforcing frames of the end-walls with the side-walls of the box body, and Figs. 6 and 7 are detail sections showing the staple-connection of the paste-board walls with the reinforcing frames of the same.

Referring to the drawings, a denotes the body of my improved, packing-box which body is made of an integral blank of pasteboard forming the bottom, side and endwalls of the same. The body a: can be laid out fiat for delivery or return-shipment, or
the side and end-walls can be bent up at right angles to the bottom so as to be connected by any approved locking device cl located near the corners of the box-body. Any approved locking device may be used, but I prefer to use the locking device described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 896,491 issued to me on August 18, 1908.
The bottom of the box-body a is reinforced by longitudinal and transverse strips 6, 5 while the side and end-walls are reinforced. by frames formed of top and bottom-strips e c and transverse stays 6 between the same, the bottom and exterior paste-board walls being attached by wire-staples e to the reinforcing frames and the strips themselves connected at their meeting points by means of transverse staples 6 so as to be held in connection with each other. The meeting ends of the reinforcing top-strips e of the side and end-walls are connected by means of dovetailed mortises f and tenons f as shown in Fig. 5, so that when the end and side-walls are placed in upright position and locked together by the locking devices, the top-strips can be firmly connected with each other by placing the dovetailed tenons f at the ends of the reinforcing top-strips of the end-walls into the mortises f of the reinforcing top strips of the side-walls of the box-body. In this manner a very strong box is obtained which can be made up in any desired sizes, and which can be readily flattened out into knockdown shape and returned for repeated use. The improved packing-boxes are designed to be used in place of the ordinary paste-board boxes on the one hand and the heavy wooden boxes on the other hand, which are not suitable for shipping and delivering light articles of ladies and mens wearing apparel. For the smaller sizes of boxes, the bottom reinforcing strips may be dispensed with, but for larger sizes they are necessary for imparting the required stiffness and strength to the same. The wire staples by which the re inforcing frames are attached to the bottom and the sideand end-walls of the box-body are clenched onthe outside, thin wire-staples being preferably used for this purpose.
