PETER HENRIOH, OF HOQUIAM, WASHINGTON, 'ASSIGNOR BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS OT. ONE-HALF TO JOHN MILHOFER, OF HOQUIAM, WASHINGTON.
FRUIT-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed July 23, 1906. Serial No. 327.263. e
ence being had therein to the accompanying( drawing.
This invention relates to collapsible fruit boxes g and its object is the provision of a box of this nature, which will be of economical construction, may be manufactured at a low cost, is capable of being collapsed into compact packages for shi ment, and then readily distended and locker? in condition to furnish a strong, serviceable and neat appearing receptacle in which berries or the like may be safely transported and advantageously displayed.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and adaptation of parts as will behereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a box embodying tlie improved construction. Fig. 2 is a-section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the top of the box at one side, Fig. 4 is a' plan view of the box collapsed, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the outer portion of the box, and 6 is a perspective view of the inner portion; Fi s. 5 and G representing modiiicationsvin tlie construction.
Specifically a box constructed in accordance with this invention consists of a shell formed of outer and inner parts constructed of thin sheets of wood veneering or other suitable material. The sheet from which said outer artis made is in oblong form and transverse y scored to facilitate its being -bent thereat to form the. corner edges 10 of the several quadrilateral walls, and of an overlapping portion 11 which is permanently secured to the juxtaposed wall 12 by fastenlhe sheet for said inner shell-part is 'likewise in oblong form and scored for the bends 14 between the bottom 15 thereof and the end flaps 16 and 16 lia s, for instance the flap 16 in Figs. 1, 2
an 4, and iixedly secured to the rear wall 17 of the outer part, as by staples 18 or the like, and its opposite flap 16 detachably connected to the front wall 19 of the outer part,
This inner part may have one of its.
or it may be made removable by having both its flaps adapted to be detaehably connected -with the front and rear walls respectively of the outer part as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. Such detachable connection is had by forming in and centrally of the upper edge of a f Wailea saddle shaped recess 21, and to the inner side of the wall is attached, as by a staplel 22, a strip of wood 23 which projectssome distance above the lower edge 21 of the recess, to provide a tongue 23 adapted to be socketed 1n an interstice 24 between a transversely arranged strip 25, 'secured in proximityof its ends by staples 26, tothe corresponding fla of the inner part.
ln distending tlie box the outer part is retained in an approximately rectangular shape by the bottom of the inner part fitting therein, and the strip 25 is caught over the tongue 21 and pressed downwardly upon the recess edge 21,`while the extremities of the strip 25 bear against the inner surface of the outer Wall beyond the ends of its recess, and thus maintaining the parts' against displacenient through the resiliency of the strip and adjacent portion of the connected flap, especially when the box is occupied and a weight thereby sustained upon the recess ed e 21.
To collapse a box such as desori ed the outer part is made flat by drawing either air of opposite corners together and folding iiack one of the flaps, as in Fig. 4, whereits other iiap'is stapled to the outer part; or where the other example is employed the A box of the class described, comprising'an outer part forming the front rear and side Walls with recesses in the upper edges of twoI opposite walls, elongated tongues connectedto said recessed walls and projecting into the lrecesses of the same, an inner part comprising'a central portion constituting the bottom of the box and with end flaps bearing against the recessed walls thereof, and strips connected at the ends to said flaps and forming sockets for bearing over said tongues.
j In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two v' tn'esses. A
