Description

G. A. DUNN. Paper-Box No. 203,899. r Patented May 21,1878.
. MYQSSQS I 3 w Wm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GERTRUDE A. DUNN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,899, dated May 21, 1878; application filed October 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERTRUDE A. DUNN, of Chicago, in the the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a Grocers Oyster and Cranberry Dish, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient means of dealing out to customers, from bulk-packages, oysters, cranberries, and similar juicy and perishable merchandise, in such a manner that the small quantities sold can be readily, economically, and safely put up and delivered. It consists in cutting a blank of peculiar shape from wood veneering, paper-board, or other suitable material, in such amanner that a firm, rigid, and four-sided flaring and deep dish can be readily formed therewith, by simply folding the blank and fastening the lapping portions thereof together, all as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 of my drawings is a plan View, showing the peculiar shape of my blank or pattern for marking out a blank. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my complete dish. Together they fully illustrate the construction of my invention.
Numbers 1 2 3 represent three sections or side pieces of uniform shape and size, formed integral with each other. They are Wider at their tops to than at their bottoms b, and consequently the upper edge of the complete blank is longer than the lower edge, and both edges form concentric arcs, in which the sides 1 2 3 are angular sections.
0 o are flaps formed integral with the sections' 1 and 3, and, when placed together to overlap each other, they form the fourth section or side of the complete dish.
d is a square or four-sided section, preferably formed integral with the center section No. 2,
and is designed to form a full-sized bottom to the complete dish. It has a lappet, f, formed integral therewith at the edge opposite to section No. 2, and corresponding in shape and size with the lower portion of said central section No. 2.
g g are lappets of corresponding form and size, formed integral with the outside sections Nos. 1 and 3. They are designed to extend over or under the bottom section at from opposite sides thereof, and to secure the side sections 1 and 3 to the bottom of the complete dish.
m m represent re enforcing pieces, fixed with glue, or in any suitable way, to the top portions of the section 1 and 3, and then perforated to admit the ends ofabail or handle.
In forming my blank into a dish, I simply bend the bottom d at right angles with the central section N o. 2, and then bend the out side sections 1 and 3 against the sides of the bottom d, and turn their lappets g g over or under the bottom piece, and secure each combined lappet and side with the bottom by means of a malleable tack or rivet. I next turn up the lappet f and fold the flaps c 0 upon it, and secure the three distinct parts together with a tack or rivet, and by then putting a tack or rivet through the top portions of the overlapping flaps c c, I complete the body of the rigid and flaring dish, which may vary in size, as desired.
A non-absorbing and flexible paper or other suitable material and dining may be placed in the bottom and over the lap-j oints, and fastened with glue or paste, in any suitable way to prevent the dish from becoming saturated or allowing the liquid contents from oozing through the dish.
I am aware that a four-sided paper box of truncated form has been produced from a blank cut complete in one piece, in such a manner that each of the four sides is full-sized, and a clumsy bottom formed by folding the ends of the four sides upon each other; but I claim that my blank or pattern, having only three 7 sides of full size, and a fourth side formed by means of the flaps c c and the lappet f, formed integral with the bottom 01, is novel, more symmetrical, saves material, and is more readily folded and tacked to produce neat lapjoints, and a light and artistically-finished complete dish.
I claim as my invention-- A blank or pattern for making a grocers dish, out from wood veneering or other suitable sheet material, having three full sized sides, 1 2 3, flaps c cto form a fourth side, and a vertical lap-joint, lappets g g, to connect the sides 1 and 3 with the corresponding sides of the full-sized bottom d, having the lappet f to overlap the bottom edges of the overlapping flaps c c, substantially as shown and described.
