UNITED STATES I GEORGE L. MORRISON,
BROTHERS PAPER Patented October 27, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Application filed July 6, 1903. Serial No. 164.340.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Townley, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes; and it consists in a peculiar folded-blank box the novelty, utility, and practical advantages. of which will be fully understood fromthe following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blank of which my improved box is formed; Fig. 2, a similar view illustrative of the manner in which the blank is folded to form the box, and Fig. 3 a broken perspective View of the box complete and ready for use.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The blank A, Fig. l, is preferably of paer; but I desire it distinctly understood that it may be of pasteboard, metal, wood, or other suitable material without involving a departure from the scope of my invention. It comwith their upper ec prises a bottom portion a of rectangular form in outline, side flaps 1), divided from the portion a by creases 0, side flaps cl of greater length than the flaps 1), portions 6, arranged intermediate of the portion a. and the portions d and divided from the former by creases and from the latter by creases g, and flaps at opposite sides of and corresponding in length to the side flaps d and divided from said side flaps d by creases i, disposed at right angles to the creases g. The said blank is provided with notches or openings j, which extend inwardly from opposite edges thereof between the flaps b and the flaps h, and preferably correspond in length to the width of the flaps h and in width to the portions e.
In forming the side flaps h, disposed the box of the blank described I) are bent upwardly into positions at right angles or approximate right angles to the bottom portion a, the intermediate portions 6 are bent downwardly into positions at right angles or approximate right angles Letters Patent No. 742,713, dated October 27, 1903.
(No model.)
to said body portion a, the side flaps cl are bent upwardly and inwardly until they rest against the portions e and at right angles or approximate right angles to the portion a, ges flush with those of the flaps I), this latter because of their being of a greater length or height than said flaps b, and the flaps h are bent inwardly against the outer sides of the flaps b and suitably secured in such position. When the box is formed of adhesive may be and preferably is employed to secure the flaps h against the flaps b. I desire it understood, however, that any suitable means may be employed for so securing the flaps 71 without involving a departure from the scope of my invention. The flaps h are of the same length throughout their width as the flaps d, and consequently it will be observed that when said flaps h are secured against the flaps 1) their lower edges will rest in the same horizontal plane as the folds on the creases g and their upper edges will rest flush with those of the flaps d, thus enhancing the finished appearance of the box and adding to its strength and durability. When the box is formed as described, it will be observed that the flaps 01 rest close against the portions eand the verticaledges of the flaps b, with the result that the bottom of the box is effectuallyclosed; also, that the portions e and portions of the flaps d and h extend below the plane of the bottom a and serve to hold the bottom a. above the support on which the box is placed. This latter is advantageous, since when thebottom is greasy or saturated with fruit juice it is prevented from soiling the support on which the box is placed. It will be further appreciated from the foregoing that the portions 6 and portions of the flaps d and h extending below the plane of the bottom a lend rigidity and strength to the box.
When desirable,-it is obvious that the box may be put up ready for use with the depending portions 6 resting in an inclined position and the flaps d resting away from said portions e and the vertical edges of the flaps 1) without involving a departure from the scope of my invention.
While the creases c, f, g, and 1' described are desirable, particularly when the blank is formed of paper or pasteboard, they are not essential and may therefore be omitted without departing from my invention.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that blanks, such as A, may be very cheaply produced and will take up but a minimum amount of space in storage or shipment; also, that the boxes may be expeditiously formed of the blanks without the employment of skilled labor.
I have entered into a detailed description 7 of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts'embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications ma be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The herein-described box-blank, rectangular in outline, and comprising essentially, asquare bottom portion a, side flaps b, creases c dividing the fi'aps b from the portion a, side flaps (Z, of greater length than the flaps 5, portions intermediate of the portion a and the side flaps (Z, parallel creases f, g, dividing the portionsefrom the portion a and the flaps .61, respectively, flaps h disposed at opposite sides of the flaps d, and corresponding in length throughout their width, to said flaps d, creases 2' dividing the flaps 71 from the flaps cl, and notches or openings j extending from the ends of the portions e to opposite edges of the blank, and being of even Width throughout their length.
2. The herein-described folded-blank box, consisting essentially of a square bottom portion a, side flaps (7 extending upwardly from opposite edgesof the portion a ,portions e depending from the other opposite edges of the portion a, side flaps (Z, of greater length than the flaps I), joined to and extending upwardly from the lower edges of the portions 6, and flaps h, corresponding in length, throughout their Width,.to-the flaps d, and disposed at opposite sides of said flaps d with their lower edges flush with the folded edges between the fiaps d and portions 6; said flaps h being separated from the flaps b by openings or notches j, and being folded against and secured to said flaps Z).
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
