UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DENNIS H. MAGUIRE, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 CARL W. S. ROTHFUSS, 0F WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
COLLAPSIBLE BOX.
Loaders.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS H. MAeUnm, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Villiamspo'rt,'in the county of Lycoming and State of'Pennsylvania, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper boxes made from a single blank for general use but especially adapted for clothing and like articles, and has for its object to provide a better and more eiiicient box and at a less cost than those heretofore proposed.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and coinbinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :Figu,re 1 is a perspective view of a box made in accordance with my invention in its partially formed condition; Fig. 2 is a like view of the completed box; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank out of which my box is made.
1 indicates a bottom section, 2 a top section, 3' a back side wall, 4 a front side wall, 5 an end wall and (3 another end wall. To the end wall 5 there are attached the flaps 7' and 8 as well as the flap 11 and to the end wall 6 there are attached the flaps 9 and 10 as well as the flap 12. The said Iflaps 11 and 12 rest on the flaps 7 and 9, and extend over the bottom 1 to form a pocket and hold the clothing or other articles in place in the box. To the side wall 4 there is also attached the flap 13 which cooperates with the flaps 11 and 12 to form said pocket, and to aid in holding articles in the box.
The top 2 is provided at its ends with the securing aps 14 and 15 provided with the slotted ears 16 and 17 respectively, and at its side with the securing flap 18 provided With the slotted ears 19 and 20. The members 2 and 18 are separated by the scored' line 21, the members 2 and 14 by the scored line 22, the members 2 and 15 by the scored line 23, while the scored line 24 separates the members 2 and 3. In like Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led April 19, 1913.
Patented Dec. 9, 191.3.
Seria1No. 762,297.
manner 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 80, 31, 32, 38, 317i and 35 represent weakened or scored lines separating different members as will be clear from the drawings. In like manner 36, 37, 38, and 39 represent slits which entirely separate the respective members associated therewith.
In forming my box the end walls 5 and 6 are bent up at right angles to the bottom 1, on the score lines 29 and 32 respectively, and the flaps 7, 8, 9, and l0 are bent inwardly at right angles to said end walls, on the score lines 80, 31, 84, and 35 as will be clear from the drawings. The holding flaps 11 and 12 are next bent at right angles to the end walls along the score lines 28 and 33 respectively to form holding or retaining strips for the clothes or other articles that may be placed in the box. The side walls 3 and 4 may now be bent up on the lines 25 and 2G, and the holding flap bent on the line 27 to form a retaining strip along the side of the box. The flaps 7, 8, 9 and 1() constitute ctlicient distance pieces as well as supports for the said end and side retaining strips, and the parts when thus folded form a snug pocket 40 into which clothing, etc., may be securely held. In addition to the above the parts when thus folded are so disposed as to mutually brace each other, and therefore an unusually strong and stiff box results. The top 2 is next folded on the line 24, to cover the contents of the box, while its associated end and side securing fiaps are folded on the lines 22, 23, and 2l. to form a sort of slip cover or closure as indicated in Fig. 2. The slotted ears 16, 17, 19 and 20 receive the fasteners 21, and the oblong slots allowa certain amount of play to said fasteners so that the strains brought on the box may be equalized and thereby preserve thc life of the said box.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts without depart ing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is 1. In a paper box made from a single blank, the combination of a bottom; side and end walls integral with and each of smaller dimensions than said bottom; a pair of ila s integral with each end wall and of tiie same height in the completed box as said side walls; an overlying holding flap also integral with each end 'Wall .adapted to rest on said first mentioned aps and to-extend over a portion of said bottom when the box is formed;- an overlying flap integral with one of said side Walls adapted to lie loosely over a relatively small portion of said bottoni; a'top integral vvith the other of said side walls; fastening means on said end walls and on one of said side Walls and flaps integral With said top on three sides thereof provided with securing means comprising integral perforated ears coacting With said fastening-mean's and adapted to surround, reinforce and support said side and end Walls, substantially as described.
2. ln a paper box made from a single blank, the combination of a bottom; a pair angles thereto; and overlying flaps also integral with each end Wall adapted to rest on said rst mentioned flaps and extend over a portion of said bottom to provide a pocket When the box is formed; an overlying flap integral with one of said side Walls also adapted to extend over a portion of said bottom to form a pocket; and atop integral With the other ofsaid side Walls, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
