Be it known that I, JAMES B. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Covered Receptacle and Hair die and Blank Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates to handled receptacles having covers, such as may be used for storing and shipping small fruits and like articles and such as may be formed up from blanks cut from card-board, pressboard, heavy paper, fiber or other like material.
The object of my present invention is to provide a receptacle of the character de-- scribed in which the side walls and bottom shall be of two thicknesses and all formed, preferably from one integralblank and wit-h one series of side walls operating to hold the other series in placeand to prevent a distortion of the receptacle by the pressureof the contents therein. y
Another object of my present invention is to provide a blank in which a means for fastening the parts of the receptacle together shall comprise also a means for ventilating the receptacle.
Another'object, is to provide a handle for such a receptacle that may be readily inserted after the cover has been placed upon the receptacle and shall operate to hold the 'cover in place.
Another object, is to provide such handle for the receptacle as may be readily formed up from wire.
Still another object of my invention is to provide cord engaging means for readily securing a cord which may be used to hold the cover in place, such cord engaging means operating also of itself to engage parts of the cover and hold the cover in place.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts and the blank and the handle all as shown and set forth in the accompanying drawings which show that modification of my present invention adapted to use as a fruit basket. follows Figure l is a plan View of the blank. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank with the central section folded up. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the folded up receptacle taken along the line w-y of Fig.

Fig. 8 is a bottom View of the parts as seen in Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the rts seen in Fig. 7 taken just to the right of the handle H. Fig. 10 is an enlarged detail view of one of the lower ends of the handle and shows its engagement with the eyelet in the bottom of the basket. Fig. 11 is a plan view of the blank for the cover.

:Beferring to Fig. 1, a blank for forming up the body of my basket is cut to the general contour indicated in Fig. 1 and is scored along the lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,13, 14,15, 16, 17, 18,19 and 20 and cut through at the lines b to form sli ts adapted to receive the slip locking members '0 and also at lines 0 to form slits adapted to receive the slip lockingmember 11 Such a blank is alsocut through along lines 21, 22, 2s, 24, 25, 2e, 27, 28, 29, so, 31 and 32. Such a blank so cut and formed up comprises then a bottom section B having side members A and end members E. The end members E have end flaps e thereon adapted, when such members are folded up in the manner indicated in Fig. 2, to form a receptacle and having a bottom B, sides A and ends E and with the flaps e folded around outside of and superimposed upon the sides A. After being thus formed up as shown in Fig. 2, the sides C are turned over the sides A with the flaps 6 between the sides A and the sides C after which the semi-bottoms B are folded down upon the bottom B and the flaps b at the ends of such the flaps c and 0 and such flaps 0 and 0 are locked together as clearly indicated in Fig. 3 in dotted lines and in Fig. 5 in bottom view.
As an additional means for holding the bottom sections together I make use of eyelets Z as shown in Figs. 8 and 10 for holding the bottoms together and such eyelets also serve as ventilators for the receptacle. Two of such eyelets may be used, as hereinafter explained, to receive the engaging lower ends of the handle H. I prefer also to provide engaging disks n, two on each side of the basket adapted to receive and engage the cover flaps d and to hold them in place and adapted also to receive in frictional engagement any cord or stringf which it may be desired to make use of. As additional cover retaining means in the same way I may provide at the ends of the basket, members 71) each held in place by two eyelets and adapted to engage the flaps d of the cover D. All of these members a and n are held in place by eyelets which serve as additional ventilating means for the basket.
The cover for my basket comprises a sheetslotted to receive the handle at points a.
After the basket has been filled the cover D is placed thereover with the flaps (Z engaging under the disk members n. By raising the ends of the cover as indicated at the right hand in Fig. 6 the obliquely disposed flaps (Z may be inserted between the memhere A and e and under the folds formed at the scored lines 2 and 5 as seen in Fig. 1, and the flaps d inserted under the memhers is.
The handle H of my basket comprises a rod or wire bent up as shown in side view in 9 having preferably a central sec tional loop it at the top, and looped members 7& adapted to engage through slots 14 e mamas therefor in the cover D and within the sides of the basket and in the notches a therefor at the upper edge of the side walls of the basket. The handle H has also the downwardly extending portions h thereon termi ating in the hooks 71. the extreme ends of which 71; extend upwardly and into the centrally disposed eyelets Z in the bottom of the basket.
When desired, as an additional means for retaining the cover in place, the members 91. and n may serve to hold in frictional engagement any desired cord as f laid around and over the cover in any preferred way. The cooperation of such members n and n with such a cord being already well known in the art, it is believed that no further explanation therefore is called for herein.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, the method of constructing and using the blank and the handle and the cover of my basket is sufficiently clear as to call for no further explanation herein.
What I claim is 1. In a receptacle of the class described a cover having flaps thereon and means on the side Wall of the receptacle adaptedto releasably engage a cord for holding the cover in place and adapted also to engage and hold the flaps on the cover in place.
2. A receptacle having a double side wall with a fold formed at its upper edge between the members comprising the side wall and a cover for the receptacle having flexibly and directly connected to and at the corresponding edge of the main body portion thereof side flaps adapted to engage between the folded side members and under the told at the upper edge of said side of the box and adapted to lie under and substantially parallel with and in substantially the same plane with the said edge of the cover for holding the cover in closed position.
